A Brief History of the Sathya Sai Robe

February 1944

striped shirt and a dhoti
When Swami went to Bangalore in February 1944, He wore a striped shirt and Dhoti.

One day He suddenly said, “I don’t want to wear this.” A person named Srinivasan, bought a few pieces of Makhmal (velvet) Dhotis dyed light lemon-yellow and had a long Jubba (lose upper garment from shoulders upto the knees) made. Such attire was called ‘Madanapalli Jubba’ in those days.

However, Swami gave up the Jubba and Dhoti too. Yadalam Venkataramanappa from Bukkapatnam perhaps designed Swami's first robe. It was light grey in colour and not of full length.

The dress went through further transformation to a full sleeve, body-length light yellow or sometimes off-white coloured, buttoned at the neck and extending down to the heels. This was reminiscent of the Kafni (upper garment) worn by Shirdi Sai Baba.

  1. Tough to imagine Swami with a striped shirt....wonder how it would've been if He had continued it that way :)

  4. Swami used to put on colourful robes during initial days. as told by Mrs Jayalaksmi (Jayamma). it seems once one of the royalty suggested Swami for saffron and after that it became regular except on certain days when yellow, while and maroon were donned.

  7. I always thought in my heart that how would SWAMI look in Shirts and Pants.. I was longing to see SWAMI as such knowing the fact that it is impossible and thinking people would make fun of me if I express what I felt,, I never told it to any of my family as well but one day SWAMI appeared to me in my dream as a 20+ year old. In fact he showed his back first and I was asking "who are you" and suddenly turned back and said and "Look at me, you wanted to see me in Shirt and Pant .. How am I looking?" and it was so vivid that I still remember that cute smile SWAMI gave towards me..I shared it with my family and everybody was so thrilled to hear this. SWAMI has even blessed the most simple or any fun kind of wish of ours.. His Grace and LOVE towards all of us is as such.. No words to Thank You SWAMI for being with me all the time.. Love you Bhagawan.
