Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the first Home Minister of Independent India, began to unify India by amalgamating the numerous Principalities. Therefore, rulers from many major dominions (17 of them) came to Puttaparthi on the 29th of September 1947 and requested Baba to bless that their princely States and status be restored. Baba laughed and talked about other matters not related to their requests. Baba said, ‘It will all happen as time goes by’. All of them thought this meant that they would get their kingdoms back and took permission to arrange for a feast in anticipation of the restoration.
Silver plates were arranged for the rulers on a platform in the Mandir. Leaf-plates were provided for the secretaries. Baba however, asked the rulers to personally serve the devotees with food. The rulers proceeded to serve their subjects, as instructed by Baba. Then, facing the rulers, Baba said, “Times have changed”, clapped His hands and laughed. It was a prophetic statement, for India became a Republic in 1950 and the kings then became common citizens of the country.
