Sri Sathya Sai Message for the Mind, Tongue and Hands...

Listen Oh Mind!

How should one purify one’s thoughts? The moment a bad thought comes, you should try to teach your mind, “Oh mind! Are you on the path of human values or on the path of an animal? This thought is an animal thought. You are not animal. The one with Manas (mind) is man. The one who is without mind is Pashu (animal).” Man came from the mind. Therefore for humanness, the mind is very much important. Because of the mind, one has become a man. If one has no mind, one is not a man. “Oh Mind! You are related to humanness. Why do you follow the animal path? Having the name of a man, without knowing the meaning of the word ‘man’, how are you behaving? If you don’t know the meaning of the word ‘man’, you cannot be called a man. You are a meaningless man! Therefore first understand the meaning of the word ‘Manava’. You are not born as man for eating, sleeping and enjoying pleasures. ‘Ma’ the first two letters in Manava means negation – that is not. ‘Nava’ means new. Hence Manava means – you are not new. You have been here since so many births. Inspite of this you have not changed your old habits. You have brought back your animal quality. Oh Mind! You are a human being, not an animal. So you should get away from the animal quality.” When you teach your mind like this, the speed of the mind will be lessened, and the thought would change. If you want to change your thoughts, you will have to teach the mind. There may be difficulties. They will come. But the one who passes through these hardships will enjoy. Without difficulties, there cannot be pleasure. But you think more of difficulties, than the good times.

You eat food daily. You take thousands of rice grains, but have you ever totaled it? Have you calculated how many grains have gone inside your stomach! But the moment when there are one or two stones in the food, you throw it telling that the whole food contains stones. You are giving more importance to sorrow than happiness. Life is three fourths happiness and one-fourths sorrow. But you become victim to sorrow. This is Pashu Lakshanam – animal quality.

Listen Oh Tongue!

The threefold path is to teach a lesson to the mind. The second on this path is the ‘word’.

Jihve Rasagne Madhura Priya Twam
Satyam Hitam Twam Priyamam Vadami
Avarna Yeta Madhuraksharani
Govinda Damodar Madhaveti

My tongue! You are fond of sweet things and are of discriminating taste;
I tell you the highest truth, which is also the most beneficial.
Please just recite these sweet syllables: Govinda, Damodara, Madhava.

Tell the tongue, “Oh tongue, that stands for knowing the sweet taste that speaks the truth that symbolises sacrifice and leads to Yoga that stands for the welfare of others, the one that gives respect to others, you are ruining and losing your respect! Oh tongue! I will tell you how respectful you are. All your life, without leaving your house, without crossing the threshold, remaining in the house, attending to your work, without any relationship with the neighbourhood, without any friendship, what a respectful life you are leading! How many words you speak! What poetry you recite! You sing blissfully and speak sweet words! But you never come out. You lie within.” Does anyone put one’s tongue outside! “This is your respect oh tongue! You never go to the street. Then why should you throw your words on the street. While you never go to the street, your words have gone to the street. This is not respectful. Keep up your respect. You are selfless. When a sweet fruit is given to you, you don’t keep it to yourself. You send it down the gullet to the stomach! You realise that I alone should not experience, but if I pass it to the stomach then it will be supplied to the entire body! In case the fruit is better, you spit it out. What a selfless and sacrificing one you are oh tongue! You are such a noble tongue! What kind of tolerance you have! You stay in the midst of 32 teeth, each like a sword. But how carefully you stay without intermingling with any of them. How intelligent you are! How much knowledge you have! You have the knack too! But you should not behave like a ‘crack’!! Oh tongue! Don’t enter the wrong path.”

You must teach the tongue about its qualities and tell it not to lose its reputation by following the wrong path. Don’t hurt anybody. Of all the sins, the greatest sin is criticising others. At times the tongue reaches the level of God – Pashupati, at times it degrades itself to the level of an animal (Pashu). If anyone is good to you, the tongue praises him like God Himself. If someone harms you, it equates him to an animal. Tell the tongue, “Don’t criticise anybody. Chant the name of Govinda, Damodara and Madhava.”

Listen Oh Hand!

Tell the hand, “Oh hand! How sacred you are! There is unity in you. Neither in any party, society, religion nor caste, is there any unity. You have no hatred. Suppose there is a cup. Can one finger pick it up? One finger calls the other fingers to lift the cup! There is different in the size of the various fingers, but you don’t observe these differences. There is unity among your fingers. With such a unity inherent in you, why do you develop enmity? Why are you entering into contradictory actions? Oh Hand! You are the one who protects everybody. You remove the troubles of others. You unify everyone. Oh hand! Please ensure that you never fall into disrepute and lose your good name. Don’t indulge in wrong actions.” By telling such things to the hand, the actions must be made sacred.

When the three – thought, word and deed are sanctified, the other instruments also follow the right path. The one who has defect in any of the three instruments becomes a fool. The one, who sanctifies these three, merges and attains liberation. Therefore never be wicked.

Hastasya Bhushanam Danam
Kanthasya Bhushanam Satyam
Stotrasya Bhushanam Shastram
Bhushanai Kim Prayojanam

Charity is the ornament for the hand
Truth is the ornament for the throat
Listening to the sacred texts is the ornament for the ears.
Of what use are the other jewels?

When you have this natural jewellery, why should you run after some artificial jewellery? Helping others is also charity. Therefore you should always try to help ever and hurt never. This is the essence of the 18 Puranas. With such noble thoughts, the three instruments of the mind, tongue and hands are purified.

"Today is your birthday, isn’t it?" - By Dr. K. Anil Kumar

Dr. Anil Kumar receiving his PhD from the Revered Founder Chancellor on the occasion of the IXth Convocation of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning - November 22, 1990
The human race today is caught in the crossroads of history. Profound and striking changes are spreading over the whole world. A great cultural and social transformation is taking place. Communism is crumbling and democracy has proven to be a paradise for the rich and the greedy. People are restless, alternating between faith and love, hope and anxiety. Man has become disillusioned with the scientific and the technological developments and the material comforts they offer. As he gazes back across the centuries, he finds his admiration overcast by sorrow. He witnesses the havoc that religious intolerance has caused. Thus mankind having tried religion with its associated dogmas and beliefs, communism with its despotic nature and democracy with its economic imbalance - is groping in the dark not knowing where to go.

At such a significant moment in this chaotic world, like the dawn ushering in its freshness and brightness, Bhagavan Baba’s message brings in the only solace, hope and answer - the message of oneness of the whole creation - “The Message of Love.”
Dr. Anil Kumar with Sri Sathya Sai at the Department of Chemistry, Prasanthi Nilayam Campus
By “love”, Swami does not mean any natural tenderness, which is there in people in varying degrees according to their nature, but a larger principle of the soul, which makes us tender, kind and gentle to all our fellow creatures. This can be achieved by the simple experience of loving Swami, because He is the Purusha of Purusha Suktam and the Purushottama of Bhagavad Gita. Swami has always been revealing His universality and oneness with creation.

When we constantly practice this love, our being will be integrated and will feel caught up in a universal purpose. We will break the bonds that are laid on us by our first birth and by nature and rise above original imperfections. We will apprehend the unknowable and experience a joy so extreme, that no language will be adequate to describe the joy of the soul.

All religions preach that we should love our neighbor. But the ability to love is difficult to acquire. Growth in spiritual life is the only force which will give us the ability to love our neighbor even when we are not naturally inclined to do so. The insight into the reality of every being comes spontaneously when one is in the constant presence of Swami. Bhagavan, out of His infinite mercy and compassion, imparts this wisdom and conveys this message to every person in His own characteristic and unique way.

Every action of Swami is pregnant with meaning. Pure love is the motive, the means, and the goal of all His actions. Every moment with the Lord is an experience in itself. But a few of them stand out as they give us inkling into His majesty and glory. The profundity and the impact of these experiences cannot be aptly described in words. The lesson that God is everywhere, both inside and outside “Antar Bahischa Tat Sarvam Vyapya Narayana Sthitaha” - and knowing all our thoughts and feelings, was taught to me through one such wonderful experience.
Sri Sathya Sai with Students in Brindavan (Anil Kumar on extreme right in the second row from the top)
In 1980, I was doing my pre-university course in the Brindavan College. That year Swami came to Brindavan on the 3rd of December, after the world conference celebrations. I was overjoyed as my birthday had fallen on the 9th of December, according to the Hindu calendar. On the evening of His arrival, we all prayed to Swami to visit the hostel so that we could celebrate Swami’s Birthday at Brindavan. After prayerful pleading, Bhagavan consented to come and fixed the date as the 9th. My heart missed a beat, since Swami’s visit to the hostel meant preparations right from the morning till the evening and I could not possibly hope to get Swami’s blessing that day. As per schedule, Swami came to the hostel at 4.30 p.m. on the 9th. Swami gave us an inspiring discourse which was followed by a wonderful musical program by the students. It was 9 p.m. I was at the same time sad and happy; sad as I could not even get Padanamaskar, and happy that Swami had come to the hostel and we all had such a wonderful time. When Swami was leaving the hostel all of us ran to the Mandir to have a last glimpse of Him before He retired. I tried to get a place somewhere along the path, but was unsuccessful. Swami came back from the hostel and went into His room and bolted the door. All the students had left and I was still standing in the staircase room, forlorn, dejected and in tears. My birthday was over without Swami’s blessings.

Suddenly I heard the door open and the melodious voice of Swami calling out “Aye! I have brought this handkerchief from the hostel. Take it and give it back.” I ran up the stairs to take the handkerchief, when the all-knowing, Hridayavasi looked at me compassionately and with a voice full of love and sympathy said, “Today is your birthday, isn’t it? Take Namaskar.” So saying, He gave Vibhuti Prasad.
Anil Kumar taking Padanamaskar
I was thrilled! I learnt the lesson that He is everywhere and is all-knowing. Merely knowing that He is in every being does not make one Love Him or the creation. But, feeling it by constant recapitulation of the truth, makes one Love Him more and more, for His sake. This Love makes us see all creation, nature and life as sacred. It brings about a change in our attitude which develops the qualities of truth and honesty, chastity and sobriety, mercy and forgiveness. This is the reason why Swami emphasizes on Love being the most basic of human values.

I pray to the Lord to bless us with incessant, intoxicating Love for Him.

"Please Come to The Hostel, Swami..."

September 4, 1991

The boys grabbed the opportunity to pray that Swami come to the hostel for a much-awaited visit. But Swami kept playing and putting off the issue.

Swami: Why hostel? You are all here, I am also here now. What will I do there? I do not eat Puri, I do not eat Alasandalu (a type of gram), I do not take Sambar.

Students: Swami, then You ask for what You want, we shall give it.

Swami: (Instantly) Anything? Will you give Me anything that I ask for?

Students: (Without hesitation) Yes Swami! We will give You anything that You ask for!

Swami: (After a suspense-filled pause) Alright. Then get Me fish, kurma, mutton…. (Smiling)

And everyone instantly burst to laughter.

Students: Swami, if You really need it, we shall definitely get it!

Swami: (very lovingly) I do not need anything from anyone. But I do need your pure love, will you give it to Me?

Students: (Instantly) Yes, Swami. Take it.

Swami: (Extending His hand) Come, then give it!

At this, all the boys got up and started walking towards Swami. Swami laughed and made all boys to sit down.

Student: Swami, come to the hostel every day.

Swami : Come there? Why, I am present there all the time, even now!

There was an awed silence.

Student 2: Swami, will You not physically come there every day?

Swami: (smilingly correcting him) Not every day Bangaru, every minute!

Student 3: Every second, Swami

All laughed along with Swami

Swami: Love and devotion must come spontaneously.

The boys were asking Swami to come to the hostel today. But somehow, Swami kept off the issue and took a small group inside for interview. After the interview got over, Swami came out and went inside the Bhajan Hall.

Swami: What was the menu today? (in the hostel)

Student: Swami, beans-carrot curry and Sambar.

Swami: (Jokingly) Carrot or parrot!

Then mentioning the items were not made very well, He came out into the portico, where the boys renewed their pleas.

Swami: Please what? Words like ‘Please, Sorry, Excuse…’ have no meaning at all.

Then one of the boys said,

Student: Swami, we are requesting you to come to the hostel.

Swami: What is requesting? That is also a kind of please only (Swami then called the Warden Sri Sanjay Sahani and asked him) What is all this that the boys are asking?

Warden: Swami must come to the hostel.

Swami: (Avoiding the topic of coming to hostel) See – the food was not very good today.

(Swami then called the mess-in-charge Sri Venkatachalam and telling him what the menu was, again mentioned that there was too much salt in the Sambar.)

Chapatis should be made properly.

Meanwhile, the boys again prayed that Swami bless the hostel with a visit.

Students: (Eagerly) Swami, whenever you say. No, Swami! We are ready even now! (The boys shouted.)

Swami: No, no, no! You have to clean the hostel first! Do you get the dining hall cleaned every day?

Warden: We do it Swami, with Dettol.

Swami: Dettol is very expensive. Phenyl is the right one to use. All the flies will go away. Now, there are too many flies! I know! I am seeing!

Students: Swami, you tell when.

Swami: (calling the mess incharge) When will it be alright?

M. In.ch.: Sunday, Swami?

Swami: Sunday? I am leaving for Brindavan on Sunday morning.

Students: No, Swami! Please stay back here!

Swami: When shall I come?

Swami: Any time! Then come, I am ready now. Go! I will come now itself!

Immediately some boys started getting up and going back.

Swami: Stop, stop!

After everyone sat down again,

Swami: I am always ready. It is only you who are not ready to receive Me! What shall I do here? There is no Dasara celebration also this year.

Then the Warden requested that many boys had not had the good fortune of witnessing the Yagna and that Swami must permit it to take place this year. …

Swami: What can I do? The canteen building is not ready. The kitchen, most important, is still not fitted with gas pipes and other essential gadgets. These are very essential for preparing food in large quantities. Even for ‘Onam’, devotees were requesting full meals while only packets could be distributed. It will be very difficult for the devotees. That is why we cannot have Dasara this year.

Swami: Oh, tell me when I can come to the Hostel?

Students: Anytime Swami!

Swami: Thursday, good day. I will come.

As the boys beamed happily,

Swami: See, nobody even said ‘Thank you!’

Students: (Immediately) Thank you, Swami

Swami laughed and went inside

Fluctuating Currency Values: Sri Sathya Sai Paradigm

Teachers should make all efforts to impart all the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to students so that students can eke out an independent living. Students can gain self-confidence only through self-dependence, which shows the path for self-satisfaction. These days the youth lack these three qualities: self-confidence, self-dependence and self-satisfaction.

There is no dearth of financial resources, but what is lacking is the seriousness or sincerity to use the limited finances for right purposes. Stiff regulatory practices exist in banks owing to improper utilisation of scarce financial resources by borrowers. People deposit their savings in foreign banks located in foreign countries. The money invested thus in foreign banks is useful neither to the individual himself nor to his own motherland. Every rupee earned should be properly and cautiously spent, and the teachers should impart the knowledge and skills of proper utilisation of funds to students.

Nations all across the world are subject to great suffering and sorrow because of the improper utilisation of valuable funds. These days the value of dollar, pound and other foreign currencies is relatively high while the exchange value of rupee is low, but the state of affairs might change any time.

What is the reason for the low value of Indian rupee in the foreign-exchange market? It can be attributed to the weak mind of the people who lack self-determination. People become panicky during periods of political upheaval which is one of the elements of the business environment. This altered scenario affects the stock exchange, later the investments and finally the value of the rupee.

What is the direct relation between the political happenings and the value of Indian rupee! Thus, it becomes clear that the value of currency is being influenced by the wild imagination of some people on the street. The fundamental cause of crisis in financial markets all over the world can be ultimately traced to the decline of human and moral values. Currency value of any country can be protected only through preservation of human values.

Sri Sathya Sai Addresses National Symposium on Values Orientation in Higher Learning

Thursday, September 24, 1987 to Saturday, September 26, 1987

A National Symposium on ‘Value Orientation in Higher Learning’, the first of its kind on a national basis, was organised at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (Deemed University), Prasanthi Nilayam, between 24th and 26th September, 1987.

Sri Sathya Sai at the Poornachandra Auditorium at Prasanthi Nilayam

Vice-Chancellors from various Institutions and educationists from all over India participated in the Symposium. Bhagavan inaugurated the Symposium in the Auditorium, Prasanthi Nilayam Campus on 24th morning.

Dr. Somnath Saraf, Vice-Chancellor, SSSIHL, welcomed the participants. Prof. G. Rami Reddy, President of the Association of Indian Universities and Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, was the Chief Guest. He delivered his Inaugural Address followed by Bhagavan’s Address to those present at the Symposium.

"We are discussing education in Human Values. What seems to be necessary is not EHV but 3HV: Head-Heart-Hand (values). The hand should carry out what the heart has approved of the ideas emanating from the head. This triune process has been described in Vedanta as Trikaranashuddhi - the purity and harmony of thought, speech and action.

Activities arising from Trikaranashuddhi find expression in two ways: one through artistic creativity and the other, through scientific exploration. Of the two, artistic creativity is supremely important. The aesthetic feeling is based on creative imagination. A sculptor who desires to carve an image out of a piece of rock has to have the figure he seeks to carve in his imagination. This bhava (imagination) finds ichcha sakti (creative expression) in the sculpture. If the creative imagination is absent, no sculpture can come out of the rock. Hence, imagination and the creative impulse have to be properly understood. Both of them are rooted in Prajna, the Divine source of all creative activity. As against this aesthetic creativity, we have the urge for scientific enquiry. This is primarily concerned with objects in the external world. Experimental research has its vision turned outward. But even that has its basis in the Antardrishti (Inward Vision). This relates to the subject.

Integration must become a way of life

Science has been making remarkable progress in the recent decades. The world undoubtedly needs the discoveries of science. But if it forgets the base and is preoccupied only with the superstructure, it will be the source of much disorder and trouble. It may cause all kinds of diseases. Science has been divorced from spirituality and faith in the Divine. Many imagine that science can create a heaven on earth. But what is the kind of heaven that is envisaged? Is it the enjoyment of material and sensuous pleasures? This hedonistic attitude is undermining all human values.

Research is going on endlessly. Science is continually seeking answers to various questions. But how many of the answers are correct and satisfying? Progressively, the climate of peace is being destroyed by science. If peace is to be ensured, science has to be promoted on the right lines. This calls for unity among the people. Service to society must become the fundamental purpose.

Everybody talks about the need for world unity. But real unity must begin with the individual and the family. From the home, it must spread to the village, nation and the world. National integration comes to the fore whenever there is an attack from outside by China or Pakistan. But when the external threat passes, integration is forgotten; integration should become an essential part of our being. It must become a way of life and cherished as an important value. It is vital to perceive the unity that underlies the apparent diversity. Bodies are many, but life is one. Beings are many, but Bliss is one. Religions are many, but Truth is one. This is the kind of oneness that has to be experienced in the depths of our heart. Prajnana (integral, higher wisdom) subsumes Vijnana (secular knowledge) and embraces also Sujnana (right knowledge). Prajnana, Vijnana and Sujnana together contribute to the fullness of man.

The ABC of life: Always Be Careful

Life is an exacting master. Hence the need to be always careful in everything one does. This is the ABC of life' Always Be Careful. One should always remember the supreme sacredness of human life. Man can experience real bliss only when he recognises the Truth, Peace and Love that emanate from Prajna and moulds his life on the basis of that knowledge. Human Values cannot be practised by studying books or listening to lectures. They have to be cultivated by individual effort.

Students! True education consists in sanctifying everything you utter and every thought and action of yours. Humility is the bed-rock. Cultivate humility as the first step, Bend the body. Mend the senses. End the mind. This is the key to immortality. Human values are essential not for students alone. Everyone has to practise human values as a mark of a true human being. When a human being declares that he is a man, it is only a half truth. He must also declare that he is not an animal. To give up animal qualities and practise human values will make a man fully human.

Education without Transformation

The educational process will not be complete unless, together with specialisation in specific subjects, one acquires general knowledge and develops common sense. Many famous scholars who had significant scientific achievements to their credit have been lacking in general knowledge and the common sense required in daily life.

Today we have made prodigious progress in various fields of knowledge in mathematics, physics, chemistry, the biosciences. But no attempt is being made even to approach study of the spiritual. All our knowledge ends with study of matter, plants and living creatures. Education must go beyond these to an understanding of the Divine. Only that is true education. The task of education is to develop man into an ideal and exemplary person. Notable discoveries have been made over the years and great scientists have been produced. But how far have human values been promoted and what is the transformation that has taken place in mankind? There is no answer to these questions. The promotion of human values must become an integral part of the educational process. It is because students today have not acquired human values that they are behaving often like demons.

Give Values Orientation to Education

Leading Vice-Chancellors and educationists have assembled here today for this national symposium. If they dedicate themselves to the task of giving value orientation to education, considerable progress can be made in this crucial sphere. To restore the supremacy of human values in all fields of national life, an association should be set up by leading scholars and educationists in the country. This association should have no links with the government. It is only if it is autonomous and completely independent that it can achieve its objectives. There are eminent educationists in the universities. They may have very good ideas but they have no freedom to implement them. They should be given the freedom to try out their ideas. Authority should be commensurate with obligations. Vice-chancellors will then be able to promote human values among teachers and students. If all educational institutions jointly strive to instill human values in students, Bharat can become an ideal nation and an example to the world.

Today, educational institutions are growing in numbers, but there is no growth of a broad outlook among the educated people. Education should serve to enlarge the vision and broaden the outlook of the people. Everyone should be made to feel that his or her welfare is bound up with the nation's well-being.

Science and Spirituality should go together

Everyone should feel proud about Bharat's ancient culture and its spiritual heritage. Spiritual knowledge and scientific knowledge should go together. There should be no dichotomy between science and spirituality. True bliss can be experienced only when science and spirituality are combined. Development of science and technology alone will not help people to get rid of bad thoughts, bad desires and bad deeds, because science by itself is not competent to sublimate life. Only spirituality can promote ethical values, the spirit of tolerance and equal-mindedness.

The science of spirit is essential for developing human values. Devotion to God is the first stage in the spiritual journey. Instead of developing devotion men are immersed in the "deep ocean" of worldly life. When the Ocean of Milk was churned, the first thing that emerged was. the Halahala, fuming poison. Amrita (nectar) came later. When the ocean of worldly existence is churned, Vairagya (renunciation) will emerge first. The nectar of bliss will come later. Vairagya is renunciation of attachment to the physical and the material.

Students should start with cultivating the spirit of mutual regard and harmony. This will lead to good behaviour. When students in one educational institution grow in this manner, they will serve as an example to the rest of the world. Students should shed narrow and parochial loyalties and prepare themselves to serve the society and the world. Whatever conclusions are arrived at by the educationists and Vice-chancellors who have gathered here for this symposium, you students should become the "Messengers" for spreading them to the world."

Swami delivering the Valedictory Address for the Symposium at the Poornachandra Auditorium
The Valedictory meeting was held in the Poornachandra Auditorium on 26th. Dr. ECG Sudarshan, Director, MATSCIENCE, Madras, presided over the function and addressed the gathering. Dr. Jagadish Narayan, Secretary, Association of Indian Universities (AIU), presented the recommendations of the Symposium to Swami. In His Valedictory Address Swami emphasized:

"Educational institutions should teach students to adhere to truth and to discharge their duties as a sacred obligation. Students should not allow success or failure to raffle their minds unduly. Courage and self-confidence must be instilled in the students.

Bend the twig and bend the tree, says the proverb. The moulding of character must start with children at the earliest age. Begin developing human values from the primary school. Some are concerned about our living in a "secular state". Secularism really means equal respects for all faiths and beliefs. There should be no hatred towards any faith. Other creeds or beliefs should not be condemned or derided. Some time ago there was an absurd idea that Sathya Sai educational institutions were religious institutions. Sai educational institutions are based on equal respect for all religions. They are wedded to unity and harmony.

Whatever studies you may pursue, do not give up your faith in God. To give up God is to give up life itself. Life is God. Truth is God. All that you do as an offering to God will be an expression of human values.

The educationists and Vice-chancellors who have assembled here have come to some decisions as a result of their high-minded deliberations. They are firmly convinced that human values have to be promoted. Whatever their limitations, they should strive to the extent possible to implement their decisions. The Divine is installed in their hearts. It is enough if they follow the promptings of the Divine. They are bound to achieve their objectives. If faith in God is strengthened, all values will develop in due course. Sublimate your lives by remembering, worshiping and adoring God."

"My Students should lead Ideal Lives"

Today, very few people understand the difference between the positive and negative aspects of life. Whatever attracts the mind is negative. Desireless actions are positive. The discharge of duties in a spirit of detachment is the basic obligation of everyone from a student to a scholar. Thereby you can manifest the divinity within you. But, if you cannot recognise your humanness, how can you recognise your Divinity? The first requisite is purity of heart and a mind free from all desires. You may or may not believe it. Here is My body. It has a mind, intellect etc. exactly like that of any of you. But I am aware of the workings of the monkey mind. I have no desires in My mind. I do not let Myself be caught by the wiles of the mind. It is natural for the mind to behave in that way. I do not get trapped by it. I am not attached to the body or the mind. I follow the conscience. Here is the body of Mine. You may touch any part of it. You will receive positive vibrations from it. There is no trace of the negative vibrations anywhere in My body. No negative thoughts enter in My mind. Sometimes I may appear to speak harshly. But it is not for My sake, but for correcting others. Although 72 years have gone by, yet I entertain no desires. I have had no desires at any time. The way My life is spent from moment to moment is remarkable. Every one of my actions is positive and not negative. All My thoughts and actions are positive. There is no disharmony between My thoughts and actions. In fact, this has been the case from the age of 9.

In this village (of Puttaparthi) there was a Karnam (village officer) named Subbarao. He was the richest man in the village. He owned most of the lands here. All the villagers used to be afraid of him. Swami was a short lad at that time. The Karnam was given to bad ways. Swami called all his young friends together, taught them various songs, and asked them to go round the village singing the songs. The boys told Baba, “Swami! The Karnam may beat us up”. Swami assured them, “He has no authority to touch any of you. No one can object to your singing the songs”. Swami taught them how to sing the songs tunefully. The boys did not know the meaning of the song. On the first day, when the boys sang the songs in front of the Karnam’s house, the Karnam went inside. On the second day, when the boys repeated their performance, the Karnam went inside, brought some mangoes, distributed the fruits among the boys, and asked them not to sing the songs. He asked them: “Who taught you these songs?” They all shouted: “Raju. Raju taught us all the songs.” One day the Karnam invited Raju (young Sathya) to come to his house for tiffin (snack). Raju told him, “I don't want your tiffin”. The Karnam was furious that a young fellow should speak like that to him.

In those songs I was teaching what was appropriate to those times. The song condemned those who went after women of ill fame and warned that such persons would be shunned by society, and forfeit the respect of everyone. The boys were afraid to sing the song. The strong words used in the song were necessary to teach a lesson to those who misbehaved. To correct people who were leading bad lives, I used to compose poems and write plays even from those early years. I am always in the habit of living up to what I preach. I do not preach what I do not practice. Whatever I do is of a positive character. I have no desires of any kind.
I have often declared that “My students are My property”. A student also said earlier: “Swami! We are Your property”. This is true. But there are properties of different kinds –those that are valuable and those that are not. As long as students consider themselves as My property, they should lead ideal lives. You should not become useless garbage. You should stand up as high mountains. It is for this purpose that I am training all of you. Many students are not rising up to My expectations. They are not understanding My Message. Some day they will understand it. There is no trace of negativity in Me. Everything is positive. Pay heed to My advice. Talk as little as possible. Some students tell Me that their parents want them to get married (after finishing their studies). I won’t advise you not to get married. If you wish to marry, do so. But, I will not force anyone to marry against his will. Each one should consult his conscience and decide. Do your duties to your family. Do not let your children do what you consider is wrong. In the Mahabharata, Dhritarashtra failed to correct his eldest son, Duryodhana, and the result was disastrous for the entire Kaurava clan. Vidura reminded him that if only he had taken firm action to restrain Duryodhana, the family could have been saved.

'What Sri Sathya Sai taught me' - By Prof. S. Siva Sankara Sai

Dr. Siva Sankara Sai receiving his PhD from Sri Sathya Sai, Revered Founder Chancellor, SSSIHL, November 22, 1989

Our Lord Sai is an eternal teacher. He is praised as “Gurunaam Guru”, the teacher of teachers. He teaches, moulds, guards and guides all of us every moment. We only need to tune ourselves to receive these lessons and teachings from Him. For some of us who stay at Prasanthi Nilayam and see Him daily, His Maya deludes us and we miss the Divine lessons He is teaching through His own example.
One of the most important lessons which I have learnt at His lotus feet is not to waste time. He never wastes a single moment of His precious time. It is said that water that flows under the bridge and the time that passes away can never be retrieved. Bhagavan not only utilizes every moment of His time but packs many things in every minute. Take the example of Darshan time. In the ten minutes or so of Darshan time, He interacts, inspires, admonishes and encourages many people through a word here, a word there, a smile here and a glare there. He radiates love and transforms a number of hearts during that brief period. He is a perfect time manager. On every birthday festival we see Him giving clothes, Padanamaskar and Prasad to many people. At such times, we often see the volunteers and those who are carrying clothes for Him unable to keep pace with Him in either giving or in walking.

Paying attention to details is another unique aspect of this Avatar. He takes meticulous care about all details in every small endeavor. He often takes pleasure and care in enquiring about the food prepared for students in the hostel. He chides us even if one of the items is not up to standard. On a particular Thursday, our hostel mess in-charge and I were very happy with ourselves for having given during that lunch session, big and attractive mangoes to all the students, instead of the routine Thursday sweet. We were praying fervently that Swami should enquire us about that day’s menu. All knowing as He is, He did ask about the menu and about the special sweet. We told Him jubilantly that we had given mangoes. His immediate question was about its cost. We replied that on an average each mango would cost three rupees. He then admonished us for purchasing those mangoes when sweets could be made in the hostel for a lesser cost. We tried to be smart and told that mangoes were very big and tried to show the size of the mango with our hands. He listened and quipped that “If the mango is so large in size, the seed inside would be equally big, so you need not boast having given big mangoes.” He tells us to be alert and pay maximum attention to small details, so that we may not go wrong in bigger matters.
Even though He is innately aware of His Divine nature, He is intensely human in His approach. His zest for life and His humor enlivens the atmosphere. Wherever He is, we see and hear peals of laughter and joyous ‘ums’ and nods from the devotees surrounding Him.
His charming nature and sharp wit make us all feel younger in His presence. He splits every word and gives a new meaning. On one occasion, we went to Bhagavan seeking His advice for a dramatic performance. He enquired the cause of our coming to Mandir, for which I replied, “Swami, please fix the characters for the drama.” He asked again, “What?” Thinking that I spoke too softly I repeated loudly “Please fix the characters Swami.” He immediately retorted, “No, ‘Characters’ cannot be fixed like appendages. They should be developed naturally with effort.” I was taken aback at this revelation.

Yet another lesson I have learnt (and am still learning!) at His Feet is that we should never separate secular and spiritual life. He emphatically tells us to spiritualize everything by our own practice of mind control. In fact, the very purpose of Sai education itself is to integrate secular learning with spirituality and morality. In order to please Bhagavan, on one occasion, a group of students undertook Akhand Bhajan during the night. On the next day He corrected all those students (and the warden for allowing them to do so!) and said, “You have classes on the next day, if you don’t sleep during the whole night how will you attend the classes? Do you think your class work is not spiritual?” It is our attitude which should be changed and not necessarily the act. He declares that if one corrects one’s Drushti (looks or attitudes) then one perceives the whole Srushti (creation) as Divine. He even gives us the advice that whenever we take bath we should feel that we are doing Abhishekam to the very Lord inside, because the body itself is a moving temple!
Above all, I have experienced, in my own humble way that He is the loving God who takes care of us, whether we consciously are aware of this fact or not. It was the time when I was doing my doctoral study. For some reason, Bhagavan was pained by the behavior of senior students including research scholars. He completely avoided talking to us. He often puts us through this test, so that, we may introspect, find our mistakes and correct them. During that time, my mother was suffering from cancer and doctors pronounced that an operation was definitely required. My father did not want to take any decision without explicit blessings and consent of Swami. He told me to pray and get His blessings and Prasadam. I wrote many letters, and tried my best to plead, but nothing happened. He simply did not respond or even look at me. I was thoroughly disappointed, and told my father about my unsuccessful efforts and my inability to secure blessings for my mother. He did not lose hope and told me to continue praying, which I did mentally, without making any physical effort of asking Him. Two days later, after the evening interview Bhagavan went round the devotees for the second time and saw my father stretching his hands to give a letter to Him. He asked “How is the health?” Presuming that Swami was referring about his health, my father replied, “OK, Swami”. Then Swami said, “Not yours, his mother’s health.” This time my father understood Swami’s question and told Him about the doctor’s advice that an operation was required. He immediately gave permission and said, “Yes, go ahead with the operation, nothing to worry. Everything will be alright.” On hearing this we were all very happy. True to His assurance, my mother felt His presence during the operation, in the operation theatre (at Madras). She distinctly remembered Swami walking away from her as she was recovering from anesthesia and came to the conscious state. Needless to say, presently she is no longer a cancer patient. So, however Bhagavan might ignore us He still takes care of us directly and indirectly in His own Divine way. Let us all remember that we are contemporaries to this loving Lord who is the greatest of Gurus, who teaches us practical spirituality. Let us enjoy our living with Him, for living with God, is in itself, a great education.
