What is more Important in Life: Greatness or Goodness?

Sri Sathya Sai at the entrance of Trayee Brindavan

My Dear Students!

Some parents have very narrow desires. They only think, “My son should have great education. My son should get a very big job and great salary. My son should get lot of dowry and get married.” All the parents desire that their children should be great, but Swami does not like this. Swami wants us to be good. What is the use of greatness? Goodness is required. There are many great people in the country, rich people in the country, highly educated and scholarly people in the country. They are all great people. But what is the benefit to the country due to their greatness? The country needs good people. When there are good people, the country will prosper.

Lord Rama: The Divine Incarnation
That is the difference between Rama and Ravana. Ravana was great, but Rama was good. What is the difference between goodness and greatness? Ravana was a great man. He had great education. He ruled over the great city of Lanka. He killed his elder brother and got his chariot. Who is a great man? One who sees man in God is a great man. Rama was God in human form. Ravana saw Rama as man in God. At least he did not see a demon in Rama. So, a great man sees Nara in Narayana. But, Rama was a good person. He saw God even in man. So, one is a great man and the other is a good man. What does a good man do? He always helps others and utilises his education for the welfare of others. What does a great man do? He misuses all the education he has learnt. Ravana was a great man, yet all his qualities were bad.

Mandodari’s Advice to Ravana

Ravana: The Demon King
Mandodari, Ravana’s wife, had warned him saying, “Ravana! What you are doing is wrong. You are insulting a great Pativrata (a married woman of chastity). You do not know how much she is cursing you and shedding tears. So, take Sita and hand her over to Rama. Not just that, also develop friendship with Rama. There is no greater friendship than friendship with God. If God is your friend, is there anything greater than that? There is no greater friend than God. Develop friendship with God. Offer back Sita to Rama.” But, Ravana did not listen. “The curse of Sita has ruined you. Hence, I should not lament over you”, Mandodari told Ravana. She went away from there. She thought, “Why should I weep? I thought my son Indrajit (meaning the one who has conquered Indra) was great. I thought that he had conquered his senses. He too died due to lack of control over his senses. I don’t want a son who does not have control over his senses. It is better that a son who cannot conquer his senses dies. I thought that my husband and son were great emperors.” What is delusion? You divide unity into multiplicity. This is ‘Bhrama’ or delusion. To see unity in diversity is Divinity or ‘Brahma Tatwa’. Mandodari thought, “I was in delusion for all these days. It has been a waste since I was deluded.” She was very upset with Ravana and on his death, told Vibhishana to burn the body and then she burnt herself. There were such great women of sacrifice in those days.

Spend your Money for Societal Welfare

At any point of time, you find sacred mothers bringing up their sons sacredly. In the Kali age, the mothers think their son should have a good job, good salary and good wife. Nobody aspires for a good name. Nobody aspires that he should be good. Nobody aspires that he should do good actions. Everybody aspires that he should be great. When the son is doing some good work, the parents tell him, “Why do you spend so much money? Deposit it in the bank.” Money should be spent for good purposes. Money and blood should not be stationary, they should flow. If blood does not flow, it will get clotted and threaten the life of the person. Similarly, it is dangerous to keep money stagnant. Both, money and blood should circulate. Then only will everything will be fine. Wherever you go, people are after money. This has become a big joke. Utilise the money that you have earned because of your education. Earn money to feed your family and parents and also do service to society. I don’t tell you not to earn. Earn well. But help your fellow men. You have prospered due to the society. Your welfare is due to the society.

Sri Venkateshwara Balaji and Sri Sathya Sai: Same Divinity, Different Forms - By Sri V. Guru Raja

Sri Venkateshwara Balaji of Tirupati
Ananyaschintayanto Maam Ye Janah Paryupaasate
Tesham Nityabhiyuktaanaam Yogakshemam Vahamyaham.”

“I assure protection for those who always think of Me. Whoever offers worship to Me with single-minded purpose, I will fulfill their needs and look after their welfare.”

Swami fully proved the truth of the above verse from the Gita in the life of a little girl, Sai Praveena.

There is a person by name Mr. Vishwanathan, working for a private firm in Patancheru, Medak district. The following incident happened in his family ten years ago when he was working in Vishakapatnam. He was a very ardent devotee of Bhagavan. But his wife did not believe in Swami’s Divinity. She was a devotee of Lord Venkateshwara.

The couple was blessed with a baby girl. But, after a few weeks of her birth, all their troubles began. The baby started crying, as she was not able to breathe properly. The parents were worried and rushed the baby to King George’s Hospital, Vishakhapatnam. The doctor examined her, did tests and took X-rays. In the meantime, the baby lost consciousness.

The report showed that the baby had two holes in her heart. The parents were stunned on hearing this. The condition of the baby was becoming worse day by day. She was admitted in the ICU. The father was praying to Swami and the mother to Lord Venkateshwara.

The doctors told them that the baby’s condition was so serious that they could not dare perform an operation; they said that it was not possible for them to do anything, and asked the parents to pray. However, they promised that they would try their best to save the child.

That night the mother was sitting beside the baby who was breathing with the help of a respirator. Suddenly she burst out and cried, “Oh Lord! If You save my child, I will be the happiest person.”

Suddenly, she was wonder struck as she saw the Lord, with half the body of Lord Venkateshwara, bedecked with glittering jewels, and the other half that of Lord Sathya Sai with His orange robe. Her joy knew no bounds when she saw Lord Venkateshwara. Then she heard Swami saying, “There is nothing wrong with the baby. Only, her age is very less. Nevertheless, I will increase her age and give rebirth.” Swami created Vibhuti, applied it all over the child’s body and disappeared.

The One Lord with many names and forms
Just like Lord Shiva increased the life of His devotee Markandeya when Lord Yama came to take his life, here Lord Sai also did the same in the life of Sai Praveena. The mother called the doctors and related this incident to them. They re-examined the baby and found that there were no holes in her heart! They were astonished .

Now the baby is perfectly healthy. Her mother has also become a devotee of Swami. The girl has joined Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School at Prasanthi Nilayam. She narrated her story in the form of a ‘Burra Katha’ (folk song) in Swami’s presence.

Let us all celebrate the glory of our Lord Sai.

When Sri Sathya Sai saved the T.A. Pai Medical College from a Catastrophe

October 9, 1992

Sri T.A. Pai
Bhagavan called a senior member of the T. A. Pai Foundation… The elderly gentleman came running and fell at Swami’s feet. He was very happy and straight away started explaining about an accident that had occurred at the Medical College and started thanking Swami profusely for having saved the lives of the students. But, he could not go further and broke down into tears. Bhagavan consoled him and explained to the students…

Swami: A fire had broken out in the college, in one of the rooms. About 40 medical students were trapped there.

Devotee: Swami, equipment worth crores of rupees was also there.
T. A. Pai Educational Institutions
Swami: Money is not important when compared with lives. As soon as the fire broke out, all panicked. But he called out, “Baba! Baba! Baba!” And within minutes, the fire had died down. All were safe. Not even a single person was injured! The world outside knows the value of Swami. If I tell them once, they are overjoyed and even cry. But, you boys, are all like frogs in the well. Outside college boys nowadays are very bad. They put their feet on the opposite bench and drink liquor in the class! They even have the audacity to offer it to the professors. The professors in turn, cannot do anything because these students have paid hefty donations of about 10 lakhs each! Some of the professors even go to the movies with students!

Bhagavan then signalled yet another person from the upper portico, who was a well-placed official in SAIL (Steel Authority of India Ltd.) and asked him to provide some useful steel articles for Sports Meet prizes. Swami then added…

Swami: I am not asking it free of cost. I always pay for what I take. I do not take anything free of cost from anybody – except Love; and that too is My Property!

Sri Sathya Sai Guidelines for Important Organisational Issues – Part 1 (Salaries and Allowances)

Salaries and Allowance System

Those residing in the urban areas receive more allowances than their counterparts living in the rural areas. Of course, people living in urban areas incur heavy expenditure in the form of high house rents, water, electricity charges, etc., whereas people in rural areas incur less under similar heads. Today, the Dearness Allowance (DA) given is either equal or more than the basic pay of an employee. Some companies over and above this, pay bonus to their employees, which is not proper. [i] Those workers whose lives are in constant danger, such as those working in mines, alone ought to be paid bonus as an additional compensation for the risk they bear in such occupations. Educated youth today, should join only those organisations where high principles are practiced. However, before that, students must gain some amount of experience working for a short time in small firms. Today, although several Multi National Companies (MNCs) are interested in opening their organisational units in India, their pre-conditions do not appear to be that favourable to the host country (India). This is basically because Indians have a very soft nature and their weaknesses are exploited, just as during the times of British colonization. Educated youth must be careful in dealing with crucial matters and as such their minds should always be well balanced to deal with such situations.

Youth must serve their motherland. Today, they are allured by money and are going abroad. You may think that an American salary of $2,000 is equal to Rs. 60,000 in India (amount here varies in accordance with dollar value at the given time) and hence it is more gainful to go there. Actually, $2,000 is not equivalent to Rs. 60,000, but definitely less than half of that amount pertaining to Indian conditions. Here is an example. You pay Rs. 1 for a banana here, but will have to pay Rs. 10 there.

Note:

[i] What Baba intends to convey in this context is His genuine concern for people engaged in mining industry and other hazardous jobs. He wishes to be more emphatic about the compensation for such people rather than anything else towards people in other jobs. One has to read in between lines to get the real import of what he has mentioned at that time and no inferences need to be drawn out of context.

Nuclear Family or Joint Family: Which System is Better?

My Dear Students!

You can develop your science and knowledge to any extent. There is nothing wrong in it. Learn everything. That is awareness in life. There is nothing wrong in learning. Subject all of your learning to discrimination, i.e. whether it is right or wrong, truth or not, permanent or temporary; and follow that which is true.

Here is a small example. See the narrow-mindedness formed because of education. People are developing themselves in an environment of narrow-mindedness and eccentricity. There are two different kinds of families. One is a nuclear family where there are father, mother and children. This sort of family is narrow. In a joint family, there are grandparents, parents and children, all living together. What is happening now is that in a nuclear family, both father and mother go to office, and the child has to stay with the maidservant or peon. These children develop the qualities of the peon or maid servant. They may become good for nothing. Parents get their children educated paying some money as fees. The parents do not even think as to where the son is, what he is doing, where he is going and how he is growing up.

In a joint family, even if parents go to work, grandparents will be taking care of children. They will be teaching them right conduct and good things about life and steer the life of the children in the proper direction. In the nuclear family if parents quarrel with each other, there is no one to settle the issue. But in joint family, either the parents or in-laws advice the quarrelling mother and father against it. Today, the joint family system has disintegrated. How can those who are ruining their own families develop broader outlook? They don’t even care for their parents. They chant ‘Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu’ (May all the beings in the world be happy) out of sheer recklessness without any sort of sensitivity of implementing it.

Firstly, this nuclear family should be broadened. Joint family should be the family system. There is a lot of benefit in the joint family system. There are many ways people benefit out of such a system. Good qualities develop in children. This system has been responsible for upholding the respect and honour of the family. There is no use of nuclear families. They are only pomp and show.

Today, we are teaching children artificial nursery rhymes such as “twinkle-twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.” Consequently children are not learning anything worthwhile. Devoid of the real knowledge and wisdom, they are cheating the world outside. This is not what we are supposed to teach. The society has to be transformed. The country should develop. The family should be uplifted. If everyone contributes to the upliftment of their families and society, the country will prosper. Today people are not feeling the responsibility towards their family.

Students!

Firstly take care of your family. Uphold the respect and honour of your family. Keep your parents happy. If you cannot do that, there is no use acquiring so many degrees.

Inspite of his education and intelligence, a mean minded person will not give up his evil qualities.
Modern education leads only to argumentation, not to total wisdom.
What is the use of acquiring education which cannot lead you to immortality?
Acquire the knowledge that will make you immortal.

One may acquire a high academic qualification such as M.A. or B.A. and attain exalted position.
One may amass wealth, perform acts of charity and attain name and fame.
One may have physical strength and enjoy a long and healthy life.
One may be a great scholar studying and preaching the Vedas.
But none can equal a true devotee of the Lord!

Without devotion all these are useless. A toy looks beautiful in all aspects. The eyes are like stars. Nose looks like a gem. Hands and legs look beautiful. All the parts of the body have correct dimensions. But there is no life. All your education is like that. You have everything. You passed M.A., M.B.A., Ph.D., etc. If there is no character, then of what use is all this? One should develop virtues. Of what use is teaching music to a deaf person? The same is the case with our Upanishads and scriptures. If there is no character, there is no use learning all the scriptures and calling oneself a scholar.

I have a Dream... - By C. Gopala Pani

In the hour in which the world sleeps, and showers the night sky with the girdle of glittering stars, I had a dream which rose before the canopy of the mind’s eye. Wafted by the scented breeze, the trees of the distant hills bowed tremulously towards a little light, shining bright in the darkening glade. With quickened steps I walked on, only to catch a tantalizing glimpse, lost over the crescent of windswept hills. What awaited me at my journey’s end? Where should I go and what should be my endeavor? At times the call of head and heart clash in battle brave and the stratagems of reason bind man in fetters of gold as Arachne. But a moment comes, and rarely, when the soul breaks free of the sand of dead habit and soars on the wings of imagination into its tryst with destiny.

As the stout Cortez on his bedrock stood, I too made my heart resolute. My goal was the temple, aloof in the raging fury of the elements. As one approached its rising edifice, the eyes espied a figure, scarce, a boy of ten, serene, clad in ochre robes pacing the hall with quiet tread. It is the mission of this boy, the Chitta-Chora of our age, to save us from the swamp of hatred, betwixt Scylla and Charybdis of sense and flesh, the sirens of a materialistic age that looms towering before the pilgrim’s cowering gaze. It is He who has come to epitomize Keats words that “beauty is truth and truth is beauty”. Caught in the rapture of His life’s Divine song, people rushed from all towns; as Radha at the call of the flute, ran oblivious to her disheveled state, soft feet over thorn and hedge; or as the Ganges rushed dancing to the ocean’s waves.

Who was He? What can move millions of people in such a way? Why does a hush descend over the din of the chattering assemblage? Nor was it a sight gay, but deigned to sway, minds of men to hush and pray. Sunshine smote the heart, groping in the dungeon of Hades.

The Premium Mobile, the Empyrean of Virtue and the Father of Semites: the gentle Buddha, the dancing Rudra and the smiling Krishna of Asiates, tangled glimpses of the one, moved by the harrowing plague and the pestilence of evil, descended not as Prince, President or Chancellor, but in poverty in an arid land. The world with Nelson’s eye, for its scribe loved the dead letter to the spirit and its pride lay in the antiquity of its accumulations and the sublimity of its time honored walls, which can belong only to the security of tombstones.

The boy’s name was Sathyanarayana Raju, in the salubrious climate of Parthi grew, the apostle of peace and truth. When He was born, it is said effulgence streamed over the humble place, cherubim played music mellifluous, while the lamb stayed its flight and the lion its prey.

He grew in the boisterous company of the village lads and told them of our great motherland. Amidst fruits and dates to tickle their palates, He spoke of the Blessed Message. Most high, how fortunate, to be born as those lads in the village, whiling the pleasant time away!

One day, He told His people that His devotees were waiting for Him and He sang the song celestial “Manasa Bhajare Guru Charanam, Dustara Bhavasagara Taranam.” When God comes among men, his feeble intellect cannot grapple His magnanimity, glory and power, and eyes are tinged by the laws of this world. Swami’s parents pleaded, cajoled and threatened, but to no avail. There gathered around Him, a select band of committed men and women, who found in Him, what they had been searching in temple and mosque, philosophy and science or art and literature. In the steps of the old Mandir, people found response after trekking through the golden sands of the Chitravati.

The sweet Amrita of Bhajans revived their failing bodies and a glimpse of the Divine, was the water mark of their lives. It is the ‘Second Coming’ and these words resounded in a thousand hearts beating in unison.

“Our father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name,
Your kingdom come, Your Will be done,
In earth, as it is in heaven.”
(Matt. 6:7)

So the dream swept through the panorama of time. The tumult of men increased to a crescendo as the mission fulfilled itself of its own volition, for its inspiration was God Himself.

There are great men who excite the imagination of the youth, as each generation gives place to the new. Napoleon, Michelangelo, Einstein, Shakespeare and Tansen have their names etched in gold in the pages of history for their immortal contributions to politics, art, science, literature and music. Thus H.W. Longfellow urges:

“Lives of great men teach us,
To make our lives sublime,
And departing, leaving behind us,
Footsteps on the sands of time.”

How much more then should the ambrosia of God incarnate affect us? Things of the mortal hue, acquire a magic of pure enchantment when placed as a wreath for the Divine. So in the dream I saw devotees singing from their hearts to their Lord, and the radiance of peace shone from their mild frames. More than that was the pure and unsullied joy, as they observed Swami’s little smile when they knew that they had tried and not in vain.

I saw people of all castes, color and creed gather for a common aim, for their summons were not of order but the call of the heart as the panting deer in the chase yearns for cool streams. In the affectionate depth of His eyes, the light of Asia shone again over the crags of despair and internecine strife, providing a sheet anchor to the disillusioned world.

The giant intellect of the Avatar penetrated into the Minotaur - like abysses of abstruse philosophy, sifting the grain of truth from chaff of the debris of centuries, discovering anew the life springs of the most ancient religions of the world. In His hand He held the zephyr and the sapphire, but greater was the power to invest the heart of stone with the power to love, opening the flood gates of all that is noble in man. Swami’s tender hand molded men of clay into steel. His life was a message of the inherent goodness in man, whom He had selected eons ago as the paragon of all creation and given dominion over land and the sea. It was He who made Earth, with second thoughts, better than the Heavens, as Milton’s refrain in “Paradise Lost” testifies eloquently.

“When the hour is darkest, the dawn cannot be far away” declared Subhash Chandra Bose. Swami’s life is a saga of India, in as much as He was a witness to the architect of that great struggle that gave India its independence. Today, His life is a living testimony to the other great struggle - of the spirit, only on realizing it, can India take its place in the community of nations.

There arose in my dream the visions of doubting men, who blinded by the insensate desires, judged the world by their own yardstick. To them let us pose the question, “Why does Swami deign to refuse the luxury and the comfort or settle in foreign land as lesser category of mortal men is apt to do. Why does He build colleges, libraries and hospitals, spanning length and the breadth of the country? Why do farmers and Prime Ministers come alike in droves to have His Darshan? Pious platitudes can be mouthed by any man, but they have not the stamp of sincerity that invests Swami’s words with a compulsive moral force. Why does the heart cry seeking to shed its bound of earthly existence to reside eternally in Him? Why do the most mundane of things appear so happy, done when we just take His Name? Indeed, those who have come into contact with Him and understand His message, however little, are alike to those who “On honey-dew hath fed, and drunk the milk of Paradise.”

The raison d’être of our existence is Swami, for the Light has come unto the Earth, and few catch its flame and rise to noble heights. So the tapestry of the dream wove on. All nations paid Homage to Him, for though He had not the power of wealth, nor the ostentatious display of miracles for gain’s sake, He was rich in the coin of the Spirit. In a world threatened with nuclear Armageddon, the prophecy of the Bible came to realization so that “swords were beaten into plough shares”.

Swami was armed with the greatest weapon- the Excalibur of Love. In the form of Rama, He destroyed the evil, alien from the self, in the form of Ravana. In the Krishnavatara, the war occurred between the cousins. Today the two are indistinguishable in the self. The only weapon efficacious now is the change of heart, which Swami wrought with His love that instructs and elevates the soul of man.

Man lives in hope. Let us look then to the promise of the future. There are still the little boys clad in white, eyes resting on Swami’s feet, clapping to the cymbal and beat, reverberating in the Mandir’s seat. But there are others, captains of the Industry, men of fame, in administration, science and laity. In their hearts devotion shines amidst the fury of storm and strife, they lead life the proper way, duty, devotion, discipline their mates, distributing Ananda like scattering seeds, on fertile ground.

There lies a great responsibility on those who are entrusted with the function of the Avatar’s work, but the invisible hand of God lightens their task. Remember the lines, “Say not the struggle naught availeth”.

Thus was I a witness of a few moments of a facet of the Lord on earth, and what a vision it revealed. Aimless men and women, lost in the abyss of sin, consumed in hatred, and hiding in shame, lifted their veils and a promise of a new life was revealed to their blinking eyes.

The night shall stay in memory as:
Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright,
Silent night, holy night, hearts quail at the sight,
Silent night, holy night, the Lord God, Love’s pure Light,
Radiant beauty from Thy beautiful face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace.
Sai, Thy mission is being fulfilled;
Oh, all ye nations rise,
Herald the triumph of the skies,
From anon till eternity.

Sri Sathya Sai On: When to commence Medical Education?

June 19, 1995

A student showed Swami a book titled - “Silence as Yoga”. Swami saw the book and asked, “What is silence?” The student kept silent.

Swami : Silence means not talking.

Student : Yes Swami!

Student : Silence is being mentally peaceful..

Swami : Silence is not just abstaining from talk. Even when we breathe, we make sound. Therefore silence means control.

This happened at the far end of the block where the lotus circle used to be situated. Swami was slowly gliding when He stopped, closed His eyes for a second or two, immediately turned to a student, and asked, “How was the quiz yesterday?” (The student had conducted the quiz programme on Sunday night).

Swami added “After dinner” referring to the time the programme started. It was only then the student remembered how the unexpected drizzle had stopped during the quiz and the Warden told that it was just Swami’s Grace. He got up to say “Swami ka Grace”. But Swami had already started to move.

Swami asked for the Bioscience students while coming back towards the Mandir. Looking at one of the Bioscience students, Swami asked, “Why didn’t you go for Medicine?”

Student : I had to come here Swami (He had joined the Institute for B.Sc. - Bachelors of Science undergraduate programme)

Swami : You got less marks in Intermediate, father can’t give donation, so you came here! Isn’t it? Tell that you got less mark in Intermediate. Being a student of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, tell the Sathya (Truth). Boys go for M.B.B.S. after intermediate, which is not good. They become narrow-minded. Boys have no general knowledge, no common sense. In my opinion students should study Medicine after completing B.Sc. Knowledge should be used for society. Society should be kept in view. Doctors are poor in knowledge. Degree Karne Ke Baad Thoda Theek Rehta Hai! Thursday Ko Kya Hai? (After completing the degree they become a little better. What is there on Thursday?)

Student: Where Swami?

Swami: Mujhe Institute Aane Ko Bola Hai. (I have been requested to come to Institute.)

Student: Swami Computer Lab Ka Opening Hai! (Swami, Inauguration of the Computer Lab.)

Swami called one of the teachers and inquired about the computers.

Swami: Biggest computer is here (pointing to head)! All that is artificial. This must be made intelligent or sharpened.

Sri Sathya Sai suggests Indian Native Solutions to Common Problems

Be it mathematics, spirituality, scriptures, law, natural sciences or others - these fields trace their roots in India. Today, companies are purchasing material worth one rupee from India, making some value addition and selling it back in India with massive margins. What we regard as waste is being transformed into something useful by adding value and is being exported back here as some other item. Hence, it is better if we can discover as to how that which is considered useless could be transformed into something useful. We must learn the technique from other countries and then return to our country and make efforts to implement it in India.

Native Applications

When one mixes a little bit of cow dung and turmeric, it turns out to be an ointment capable of curing any kind of wound. Some countries have done lots of research on cow dung and turmeric. They have patented it and have laid down a condition that without their permission, the same formulations cannot be used. Who discovered the utility of these items? It is the Indians that had first discovered them. Today, if a bandage is applied with cow dung, the doctor comes and scares you off by saying, “Useless fellow! That wound is going to become septic.” If cow dung is applied on any boil, the boil will dry up within three days. It is because of such therapeutic properties associated with cow dung that our ancestors used to mix it with water and sprinkle it in front of their houses. Because of this, poisonous insects would not come close to the house. Even Gou Mutra (cow urine) has such properties. When sacrifices were being performed, before taking the pledge of initiating the sacrifice, cow urine was partaken ceremonially. In those days, Indians used to derive lots of benefits from various elements which were part of Nature. They enjoyed everything that was available naturally in a very intelligent manner.

Hence, if you are planning to establish factories or industries, do not look for government help or assistance (barring procedural rules and regulations) or foreign investors. As far as possible, depend on your own motherland. Rely upon truth and righteousness and develop yourself into an ideal role model. Make every effort to develop the lot of our people also. You must all be careful and count on your self-confidence, self-power, and self-support. This self-power is a useful and strong ally.

The Day He Declared: "I AM SAI BABA"

Thursday, May 23, 1940

This was the landmark day when Baba first declared Himself as ‘SAI BABA’. The scorpion sting had left Sathya much different a boy as compared to the genial one known to the family members and the villagers. He had been acting strange much to the horror of all those who witnessed. That Thursday (23rd May) though, Sathya seemed His former self. He beckoned all the villagers, the neighbours and His family members, made them sit around Him and conversed with them in great camaraderie. He materialised various objects and distributed them freely.

Those around seemed to have lost their fear of the Muslim ghost that had possessed Sathya. The father Sri Venkappa Raju was infuriated by all this. He rushed towards Sathya armed with a cane stick and said, “Who do You think You are? If You don’t answer me I shall hit You. Come out with it – are You possessed a lunatic, an incarnation, a deity or a devil? Who are You?” Sathya replied calmly, “Do you not know who I am? I am Sai Baba. I descended because the Venkavadhoota (the family saint of the Raju family) prayed for My descent.” The reply was calm and deliberate. The ring of truth in it was unmistakable. “Apastamba Sutra, Bharadwaja Gotra”, He kept on muttering to Himself through out that day.

Sri Pedda Venkappa Raju was, however, still under the delusion that His son was possessed by the spirit of Sai Baba of Shirdi. He believed that a Muslim priest’s intercession would yield the desired outcome. He traced one such priest in Penukonda, and requested him to de-possess his son. Sathya was taken to Penukonda where the priest, who happened to be a Government official, declared Sathya a ‘lunatic’. “Lunacy it is, but whose?” retorted Sathya waving His hands in air and producing sacred ash which He scattered all over the room.

The subsequent Thursday, 30th May 1940, the father requested Sathya to give some proof of His claim and Sathya consented. It being a Thursday, Jasmine flowers were heaped for Puja as directed by Sathya previously. Sathya asked for the flowers to be placed in His hands. He scattered them casually, and lo! The flowers assumed the shape of the Telugu letters “SAI BABA”. The power of this ‘written’ name moved everybody to hail little Sathya as ‘Sai Baba’.
