Each Human Being is Ardha Narishwara

The Ramayana has some great secrets and mysteries in it. I will tell you more about the Ramayana in the month of May. Lord Brahma said that as long as the rivers and mountains exist, the Ramayana will exist. The mountains and rivers are symbolic of men and women. As long as men and women are there, the Ramayana will be there. Who are men and women? In the beginning, there was only one. The body (Deha) represents the feminine aspect (Prakruti). The Soul (Atma) represents the masculine aspect (Purusha). As long as the Deha and the Atma are there, the Ramayana will exist. When the body is there, you can see the Atma. Only if you have the Atma, you can get the body. Without the Atma, there is no body. Without the body, you cannot recognise the Atma. Unity of both is the Manava Tatva – the human principle. Thus every individual is Ardha Narishwara – androgynous (half man, half woman). Body is feminine (Nari/Prakruti). Atma is masculine (Purusha). That is how in the human personality, both Ishwara and Parvati are there. Depending on the body alone, none can claim that he is a man. What are the characteristics of a man (Purusha Lakshana)? They say Udyoga Purusha Lakshana – Doing a job is the characteristic of a man. But in modern times, even women are doing jobs! Now women are taking three-fourths of the jobs! Are they men? Just because of jobs, one cannot be considered a man. Job is not the characteristic of man. Karma (action) is Purusha Lakshana. Karmanu Bandhini Manushya Loke – the whole world is bound by actions. All men are bound by actions. Every man does actions with the body. But the one who gets the work done is the Atma. There should be unity of the feminine and masculine principles in this humanness. Therefore first the Prakruti (feminine principle) is worshipped. We call – Lakshmi-Narayana, Parvati-Parameshwara, Radha-Krishna, Sita-Rama. Nobody says Rama-Sita or Narayana-Lakshmi or Parameshwara-Parvati. They say first Parvati and then Parameshwara. First is Prakruti, second is Purusha. Prakruti is body. Purusha is Atma. In Karnataka they say, “My Prakruti is not good”. They call the body – Prakruti. Prakruti is feminine. The body is Prakruti. The Atma is Purusha. Depending on the body, the Atma gets every work done. You should not have differences saying, ‘She is a woman, I am a man’.

Ardha Narishwar - A symbolic representation of the Divine Form of Shiva and Shakti - the masculine and feminine aspects of Divinity

There is only one Caste, the Caste of Humanity

When Narendra (Swami Vivekananda) went to Chicago, he said, “Ladies and Gentlemen”. Then he said, “Brothers and Sisters”. Everybody clapped. They never heard such strange appellation. “All are sisters and brothers”, he said. After that he said, “Ladies and gents are not different. Both are same.” He looked at the gents and said, “You are also ladies.” Then he looked at the ladies and said, “You are also gents.” Humans have both aspects – feminine and masculine. Bodies may be different, but the Atma has no difference of gender. In such a situation, whom can you call a man and whom can you call a woman? Atma is Chaitanya. Jiva is its name. Which Jiva? Jiva is one. It is not woman Jiva or man Jiva. Jiva is one and the same. The same Jiva exists in both. Ultimately you have only the Atmic characteristics. All other things perish. The differences of gender, colour, colour, cast and creed, all of them vanish. What are the differences in the Ashrama Dharma (duties dependent on one’s stage in life). What are these? These are the Brahmacharya (celibacy), Gruhastha (householder), Vanaprastha (hermit) and Sanyasa (renunciant). These are the four Ashramas. You can utilise the life principles to a great extent. There is no relation of the life principle with the five elements. You may think that somebody is a Brahmin (priestly class), somebody is a Kshatriya (warrior class), Vaishya (trader class) or a Shudra (service class). No such differences exist. There are no differences of any kind. What is the caste (Kula) of wind? What is the caste of fire? What is the caste of ether? What is the caste of earth and water? The water and fire have no castes. When the five elements have no sense of castes, why should we? Water is water. Whoever drinks it, it will remain as water.  Whoever touches fire, it will remain as fire. When the five elements do not have a sense of caste differences, why should man, who is made of these five elements entertain such differences? Because of having such differences in our minds, we are getting ruined. No differences should be there. There is only one caste, the caste of humanity. Humanity is what is required.

I am the All-Knower - By Santosh Pai

Santosh Pai with Sri Sathya Sai - In the Interview Room

It is Bhagawan’s immense Mercy and Grace that all His students, without exception, secure a respectable and responsible position in society. His Mercy has been flowing bountifully to all of us all the time and it is this that has helped us tackle our problems. I strongly and firmly believe that the Divine Messages we heard, have sunk deep into our sub-conscious and its essence has become an integral part of us during the time that we have spent in His Presence. It works like a pole star guiding us through the darkest of nights and the toughest of situations.

Recollecting those glorious moments with our Lord, I now realise that it was with great simplicity and alacrity that Bhagawan put through His Message to all of us – be it Management concepts or the principle of Atma. Life in the external world has been a fight with ingredients: success, struggle, victory, joy, sorrow, pleasure and pain. But there has always been a supporting base for us – His Grace. This has worked like a safety net protecting and guarding us all the way.

Recollecting the numerous experiences and Divine Moments with our Lord, one instance comes to my mind. This incident occurred during my Management Programme days at Prasanthi Nilayam. This is an event, which under normal parlance, may not be called as a spectacular one by others, but it is a significant incident which displayed His Grace for me. I belong to the Master in Financial Management (MFM) batch of 1994-96. MFM students at that time had to submit a detailed Dissertation on a specific topic apart from the annual project. The process was more like a thorough research on the subject matter and submission of the findings and results at the end of the year. My topic was that of application of complex statistical cum financial models on corporate organisations across industries, analysing its impact and reasoning its findings. The rigours of the assignment were enormous and tough. Data was scarce, facilities limited and time was running out. It was a time when there was no concept of the internet and the data sources were basically printed or published materials available in libraries.

As the submission date neared, my pulse began racing. The dissertation was getting held up due to lack of specific required data and the support for analysis and interpretation. Frustration was mounting and I began to feel the heat. At this point, there was only one solution for me – Bhagawan. I was in the habit of sending telegrams rather than letters and I did just that. To my astonishment, from the very next day, the required data started flowing in from unexpected corners and sources. Some lesser known friends of mine from Mumbai started sending me the right kind of data and information. In no time, all data and information was on the table. One of the lecturers, with whom I had very little interaction, came to me on his own one day, asked me about the progress of my dissertation, and offered to tutor me everyday. He assisted me throughout, till the completion of the dissertation. All this seemed like a dream to me. What looked impossible for 11 months was completed to perfection, within one month, perfectly in time for submission. It was as if a strong gust of wind had blown off the dark threatening clouds. His Grace had worked wonders!

Sri Sathya Sai at Kodaikanal

Yet another incident during my visit to Kodaikanal with Bhagawan in the year 1993 is fresh in my memory. It was His Mercy and Grace that I had got this golden opportunity. As a student I had seen Bhagawan, out of His immense love, materialising various objects for His devotees. I had a desire to see Bhagawan materialising different objects at the same time. This was just an inquisitive and innocent desire. It so happened that our music group gave a good performance at Kodaikanal and Bhagawan was very pleased. After the programme, back at the residence, He spoke to us at length about the programme very lovingly and expressed His satisfaction. Looking specifically at me, in a mischievous manner, He began waving His hand and brought out three different objects – a golden bracelet and two different types of rings. He gave us the gifts and looking at me with a smile, asked me, “Happy?” The look was pregnant with the message – I am the All Knower! I know all that is in your mind and heart!

Divine Visit to the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School Hostel - Part 1

Sri Sathya Sai arrives School Hostel at Prasanthi Nilayam

February 26, 2002 (Tuesday)

The glorious day dawned in the east flashing a vista of crimson and gold across the horizon, the sweet tweets of the birds, the flowers like stars laughing through the grass and Mother Earth in Her green velvet gown and not to forget the children, all heralding the Divine arrival for the Lord Himself condescended to pour Love on all His beloved children at the Higher Secondary School. The regal redolent mansion that houses all the school children at Prasanthi Nilayam was dressed in a rich and glittering style to welcome Him. Swami came by the sparkling white Benz and was received by the School Principal Sri Y. Sivaramakrishnaiah, Warden Sri K. Janardhanan, and other teachers.
Sri Sathya Sai with School Teachers at the Hostel on that day
He was escorted by the Vedam students and dancers to the tastefully decorated prayer hall in the center of the Hostel. Enroute to the venue, Swami blessed the general stores, the fruit stall and also some trays of toffees. This was followed by a soul stirring rendition of devotional songs and speeches which were offered to Him by His children.

Finally, the Lord glided towards the podium, gave a mesmerizing smile and delivered His nectarine message.

DIVINE DISCOURSE

Students!

Love is life. There is nothing other than Love in this world; there is nothing greater than it. I need not tell anything to the students who preach and propagate the supremacy of Love in our educational institutions.

Love is like the moonlight. It lends coolness to the heart and showers sweetness on everything. You must express this Love in words, in looks, in work and make Love the very life of everything you undertake. That is how you should lead your lives, suffused with Love. Life devoid of Love is futile. What I give you is Love and what you have to give Me is Love. Nothing can equal the splendour of Love. Love is God. God is Love. How should you experience this Love? True education lies in transforming live devoid of Love into lives full of Love.

What is education? We mistake education for mere intelligence. True education is discharging duties with intelligence and reaching our destination. We should cultivate Love and complete life by attaining liberation. The Gopis of yore sanctified their live, from dawn to dusk by filling their lives with Love.

From the time you wake up ,
Till the time you go to bed,
You waste your lives in eking out mere livelihood.
What have you gained by disregarding Divinity?

Ponder on this aspect earnestly. O Students! Why should you live here if it is not for the sake of Love? It is only Love that abides in all that underlies all. Gopikaas sang the following song:

“Sing O! Krishna! Sing!
Sowing the seeds of Love
In the lands devoid of Love,
Making the rivers flow and flood
Sing O! Krishna Sing!”

All the Gopikaas sang the songs of love. Radha prayed:

“Sing O! Krishna! Sing!
Sing the song soaked in honeyed sweetness,
Speak O! Krishna speak
Speak to our hearts’ content
Extract the essence of Love
Transform it into the primordial sound
And cast it into the mould of Love,
Increasing it in abundance.”

Love is supreme. There is nothing greater than Love in this world. You must bring fulfilment to your lives at this tender and sacred age by cultivating Love. As you grow up this Love travels to different areas in different directions. It deserts the royal and noble path and travels on crooked paths. Hence you should nourish the sapling of Love into a sturdy tree without bends and twists. Learn the art of merging into Divinity with bliss. That is true devotion. What is true devotion?  Devotion is nothing but reflection of Love. Devotion without Love is no devotion at all. This devotion confers on you

Shakti (energy), Yukti (skill), Rakti (love), Virakti (detachment ), Anrakti  (longing) and Mukti (liberation). There is no Mukti without Prema (love). There cannot be Rakti and Virakti without Love. We can achieve everything with power of love.

Of all forms of Love, Love for mother is most important form of Love. Your mother gave birth to you, brought you up and worked for your welfare. Foster the Love for mother. Love for mother earns Love from God as well. Even God is your mother.
Sri Sathya Sai seated at School Hostel Altar
Love is of two kinds: secular and Divine. Love for God is Nivritti. Love for father, mother, brother and sister all come under the category of secure Love. This Love is marked by the Love of the body and confined to one life. But Divine Love transcends all these. You must approach Divinity in the spirit of Love. You should worship Divinity with Love.

Sri Sathya Sai provides Spiritual Guidelines for a Values-Based Manager: Part 1

Morality and good conduct are of primary importance in business. When people possess these qualities, anything can be achieved in society. These qualities will make your superiors develop confidence in you and your competence. When they gain such confidence in you, they would be ready to offer greater responsibilities to you. Therefore, first make people develop trust in you. For example, an affluent person has a cook in the house. When the cook serves the master faithfully, the master in course of time is likely to hand over the house keys to him. Even when he goes out of the house for some work, he would leave the key and other household responsibilities to the cook.[i]

Similarly, believing that ‘Duty is God’, if you discharge your duties diligently, your superior will be ready to give you greater responsibilities. Faith is essential if you wish to prosper in life - faith in yourself and faith in God. This is the secret for achieving excellence. We must inculcate these two. They are the primary chapters to be mastered in one’s education. You may have learnt very little. But make sure to put into practice what you have learnt. It is of no use to learn a lot and put very little into practice.
Spiritual Qualities of a Values-Based Leader-Manager

SPIRITUAL QUALITIES OF A LEADER-MANAGER

1. Fundamental Discrimination

Voice of conscience signifies the inner path of spirituality – the Nivritti Marga. Thoughts signify the outward path – Pravritti Marga. The mind receives everything through the senses from this phenomenal world. For example: the eyes witness and the mouth speaks. In this way, the external world-of-objects attracts the mind. This is the fundamental nature of material things. Conscience is related to the intellect and is associated with awareness (Chit). Everything that is perceived by the senses is first analysed by the conscience - ‘Is it good or bad, right or wrong?’ It rejects that which does not conform to its norms or standards. The voice of the conscience possesses the power of discrimination. We should not pursue the thoughts. It is often said, ‘Follow the Master’. Your conscience is to be inferred as the master here.

Thoughts accept blindly whatever comes their way. But conscience which has the power to discriminate, takes time to discriminate and then decide. Hence, whenever you are in a predicament or dilemma, do not react instantly. Do not blindly follow your thoughts. They come and go in a jumbled manner. They are like the passing clouds, a characteristic of the materialistic way of living. But the conscience follows the inward path. This path can show us the right direction to the truth. Hence, always follow the voice of the conscience. If you choose to follow your thoughts, you will only be degrading yourself to lower levels of existence. Take care to see that the conscience examines every thought on the basis of it being good or bad. After the conscience decides the appropriateness of the intention, one must put the good thought into action.

2. Love of God

‘Love is God’ and is present in everybody. However, each person makes use of love for different purposes. You have to always love everybody. You may hesitate to love everybody as you may not perceive any benefit in that. To this enquiry the answer would be in the form of another question: Why do you want to hate? What is the reason for this hatred? Hence, if you ask what you gain by loving, the answer for this lies in another query: what do you gain by hating? Therefore, in order to do away with the flaw that arises on account of hatred, we must foster love. There is nothing that one would lose by loving everybody. More so ‘Love is God’ and the human heart symbolizes love. Hatred is a manifestation of the mind. Similarly, envy and ostentation are also manifestations of the mind. Truth, compassion, sympathy, empathy, genuine concern and sacrifice are all manifestations of the heart. Since you are human, you must accept and follow only that which springs from the heart. When you love all, peace of mind reigns. If you nurture hatred in yourself, ‘peace’ is torn into ‘pieces’. When the creations of the mind are all akin to passing clouds, why do you rely on them? Love, sacrifice, truth and the like are permanent. They confer immortality on mankind. Elimination of immorality is the only way to immortality.

Notes:

i. Baba here refers to wealthy joint family households in ancient India who used to employ cooks to look after the cuisine requirements of the entire family living under one roof. The family comprised 2 – 3 generations of people along with their off springs, which was administered by the family head known as ‘Karta’. The head cook was assisted by a few people in the family who together used to manage the entire responsibility of the kitchen besides cooking i.e. purchases of supplies for kitchen from time to time, menu management, social feeding, etc. He was aware of the tastes and preferences of each and every family member and used to move in the family more like a family member.

Reminiscing the Shivaratris at Prasanthi Nilayam from the Days of Yore...

Swami performing Abhishekam to the Shirdi Sai Baba Idol on the morning of Shivaratri in the Poornachandra Auditorium

Friday, February 26, 1960

Swami commenced the Mahashivaratri Festival (26th February, 1960) by hoisting the Prashanti Flag. He went to explain the significance of the flag. Swami performed the Maha Abhishekam at noon and also materialised a twin Linga during the Abhisheka. The Abhishekam was performed by an unending cascade of Vibhuti from a silver vessel which was produced at the mere touch of Swami’s hand.

Tuesday, February 11, 1964

On 11th February, 1964, Mahashivaratri was celebrated at Prashanti Nilayam, wherein about 20,000 people from different parts of India had gathered. After the customary flag hoist, Swami inaugurated the telegraphic services at the Prashanti Nilayam Post Office. Swami inaugurated the new printing machine at Sri Sathya Sai Printing Press. That afternoon, Swami Himself distributed the Abhisheka Tirtham to all the devotees. Evening Bhajans commenced at 6.00 pm. At around 9.00 pm, an oval-shaped Linga, light pink in colour emerged from Swami. Swami stated, “This is a Brahmandalinga. This is a very rare Linga. Having seen this, none of you will have any more births.”

The 7th Anniversary of Sanathana Sarathi was celebrated in the Divine Presence on this auspicious day.

The Jhoola Darshan in the evening

Thursday, March 09, 1967 to Wednesday, March 15, 1967

Mahashivaratri 1967 was celebrated from the 9th of March to the 15th of March. In His Shivaratri Discourse Swami stated, “Though every day is holy in this Prashanti Nilayam, the Shivaratri is especially so, on account of the emergence of the Linga from the living Shiva”. During the Lingodbhava two Lingams, one pink oval Lingam called Vishwa Linga with the orbits of planets and luminous on the inside; the second a smaller one, the Jyotir Lingam emerged from Swami. On all the days Swami was engaged in healing and attending to the sick, the infirm and the old amongst the pilgrims.

MEANING

The manner in which Lord Shiva, the King of dancers danced on the Himalayas, the silver mountain, was –
The manner in which the dweller of Parthi, who is Shiva, the Supreme Lord protects His devotees, is –
The supreme Shiva performed the Tandava (dance); Eashwara, the Supreme Master performed the Tandava.
Adorned with earrings, bracelets on the wrist, and grasping the drum in the hand, Shiva dances to the beat.
With the crescent on the forehead, the throat stained with poison, and the body smeared with Vibhuti, Shiva performed the Tandava dance.
With the damsel (Ganga) in His matted locks, the third eye on His forehead and the crystal necklace shining brilliantly, Shiva performed the Tandava dance.
With Gauri reigning the three worlds, the Ganga flowing out in the form of rivers, and Ganesha moving about, Shiva performed the Tandava dance uninterrupted.

Who is Your True Friend?

My Dear Students!

You should have good sight. See good. How to see good? When you have good thoughts, you will get good vision. Do good. When you get a good thought, you can do good actions. When you have a bad thought, you will do only bad actions. If the whole body wants to perform good actions, you should have pure thoughts. For whose sake do you do this? It is for your sake. What for are you performing your actions? ‘Chittasya Shuddhaye Karmaha’

We undertake actions in order to purify our mind. How can you get the purity of mind? Here is a small example. In this world, who is there to love you? Do you think your mother loves you? Do you think your father, brother, wife or husband love you? It is true that they all love you. However, in their love there is at least some trace of selfishness. Who really loves you without selfishness and whole-heartedly? Even your dearest friend may love you but not with absolute purity as there is still a trace of selfishness. Without having desire for any reward, there is only One, who really loves you and that is God. Thus, no friend is higher than God in this world, as God does not have even the slightest trace of selfishness. God does not perform any actions with self-interest. He wants to help others all the time. He performs all actions for the sake of others. So, you may think that there are so many who love you in this world. No, they love you for the sake of their own benefit and selfishness. Even your mother does not love you without a trace of selfishness. She has some self-interest for her child. Only God loves you absolutely and without any trace of selfishness. We should offer ourselves to such a selfless God.

In this world, we call many as our friends. But who truly is our friend? As long as you have money in your pocket and your father is in good position, all will tell you ‘Hello, Hello’; but, when your father has retired and you do not have money, nobody will even say ‘Goodbye’! When the tank is full, all frogs go there; but if it is empty, you cannot find even a single frog! However, God is not like that. All the time His tank is filled with the water of selfless love. The change of time and space does not matter for Him. In any situation, the tank of God’s love will be full of nectarine water. Therefore, God is the only true and eternal friend for everyone. Unfortunately, you give up such a friend and struggle to attain worldly, physical, temporary and untrue friends. All these friendships are ephemeral and last only for a short time. Thus, we should always pray to the eternal and true friend.

When I joined Swami’s University… By Raghavananda D.V.

Swami is the greatest Avatar ever to walk on the earth. His words, “Where ever you are, how ever you are, you are Mine. I would never forsake you” are so true. I can never stop wondering about His Boundless Grace. I had the great opportunity of being His student when I got into the MBA programme in 1986 in the first batch.

Grant Me Last Seat At Least…

When I heard that Swami was starting an MBA course in May 1986, I knew I had to enrol myself in it. I decided not to let go of this opportunity. So, I started praying hard besides preparing for the course.

I needed Him and only He could give me a seat. Both the written test and interview went on smoothly, raising my hopes of admission. But admission eluded me in the first list of selects. I raised the pitch of my prayer and began praying to the Lord to ‘please give me the last seat at least’.

As the days passed by, tension mounted and nothing happened. My father asked me to move ahead with other plans. I didn’t let go. I kept my focus and finally on August 25th, 1986, my prayers were answered. A telegram from the Registrar asked me to join the course on the 28th !

On Krishnashtami day, I reached Puttaparthi and reported to the Dean. That evening, I had the great privilege of having Darshan from the verandah. I was sitting in the fourth row from the front. Swami came out and walked straight towards the students. He came to me and asked me “MBA?” I said, “Yes Swami!”

“Where are you from?” “Vijayawada, Swami”. “Good.” And He left. When He asked me where I was from, I smiled wryly inside my heart. After all the tension I went through He couldn’t have been more ‘mischievous’. And it turned out that I had been the last to be admitted to the course. No one else was admitted, even though two more seats were vacant.

It was the most beautiful period of my life. Everyday was a joyous holy day, with Swami spending most of his Darshan and Bhajan time with the students. And every minute we spent with Him was truly ‘Yoga’ (Union with God) and no other Sadhana could ever match it. His love, playfulness, jokes, knowledge, care, Divinity, miracles …were all there on display.

Brahmaarpanam…..

One of the lessons I learnt is about the food prayer, Brahmaarpanam. Ever since my Upanayanam a few years ago, I had been following a prescribed ritual before and after food. This ritual is about offering food to God and the five Pranas (life forces) in our body.

One day, while Swami was with His students, He informed a fellow student beside me that he should chant only Brahmaarpanam before food. I wondered whether the message was intended for me also. I gave it a good thought and found that by chanting Brahmaarpanam we offer food to only 3 Pranas and the other ritual offered the food to five Pranas. So, I concluded that the current ritual was better. The following day, the same student was sitting beside me. Swami came straight to us and told him that for digesting and converting the food into energy, only 3 Pranas were required and not all five. This was a jolt for me and I knew that the message was meant for me. From that day onwards, I chant only Brahmaarpanam and even encourage others to do so.

Evening Darshan……

The Evening Darshans at Prasanthi Nilayam

Evening Darshan was mandatory for all the students. As soon as the college was over, after a brief break, all the students used to rush to the Mandir for Darshan and return only after Bhajans. This was little taxing as there was not much time for relaxation after college and for almost 2 1/2 hours we were expected to sit cross-legged in the Mandir. Darshan would be for a very brief period and thereafter we would sit idle for almost 2 hours waiting for Bhajans to start. Moreover, being a youngster, I always thought that evening time was for games and going out. I was not used to sitting quietly for two hours. This was really difficult during the first few months. I used to shudder at the passing of ungodly thoughts in my mind and that too at God’s place. But since nothing could be done about it, I resigned myself to fate. Slowly, as the time progressed, I started enjoying the silent hours and my mind became sharper and more controlled .I got so addicted to it that I still yearn for a chance to spend time like that during the evenings. What happened to me to cause such a transition?

Well, for once, the period helped to purge out all negative thoughts from my mind and I became more controlled. It helped me to unwind and plan for the next few days .So, I became more sharp. It was a wonderful thing to happen. Here I must remind all of Swami’s saying, “Do not underestimate the power of Darshan.”

An Elixir Called Student’s Way of Life……

Life at Puttaparthi for a student is completely a new experience. There is personal care, yet there is discipline too. It is hectic and yet enjoyable. Result wise, it was the best period for me. I played my best cricket, studied my best and was my best self during those days. Well, how was that possible?

Maybe it was because of leading a Satwic life or because of all the restrictions. Maybe it was entirely because of Swami’s Grace. What ever it was, it made me my best. This realisation came to me only a few years back. From then on I made it a point to think like a student, do the things I did and follow the discipline, like getting up early, chanting Suprabhatam, eating moderately and seeing, hearing, speaking and doing only good. You won’t believe it! I am getting exactly the same results out of my life even now. I am able to perform better at my job, look younger than my age, be a good father, feel healthier and contribute my best. So, Swami makes us our best. I wish every citizen had an opportunity to be Swami’s student.

“What is God’s Real Weight?”

February 23, 2002 (Saturday)

Swami came out of interview room at 3.30 pm. He then called students to distribute sweets. Swami materialised rings for two security personnel. He even blessed them by standing beside them for photographs and gave them clothes. He then came out and asked the teachers seated in the front…

Swami : What is My weight? (Getting no response, He again repeated) What is My weight?

Teacher : Swami, 108 pounds.

Swami : Yes. It has been constant from 60 years. What is God’s real weight?

Prof. A. K. : Swami, everything is God.

Swami : What is God’s real weight?

Prof. A. K. : Who can estimate the weight of God?

Swami : Yes, you can at least estimate a little? (Finding no response) God is Anantudu (infinite), Apramanudu (immesurable), and Aprameyudu (incomprehensible). In science, you have protons. Protons, in a garlic size, weigh up to 10 crore tonnes. Scientists have calculated it now. If such a tiny part is so heavy, how much should God’s real weight be?

Prof. A. K. : Yes, Swami. God is smaller than the smallest and bigger than the biggest.

Swami : God is everything. He is Anantudu, Apramanudu, and Aprameyudu. Anoraneeyaan, Mahatomaheeyan (He is smaller than the smallest and bigger than the biggest). God is Avangmanasa Sanchari (beyond words and thought).

Prof. A. K. : He is thought beyond thought.

Swami : He is in thought and beyond it. Beyond thought means He is not in thought.

Teacher : Then how should a Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) worship Him. How to comprehend Him then?

Swami : God is in you, with you, above you, below you and around you. The story of Prahalada is the best example of this. He was a small boy, like these schoolboys seated in front. His teachers were Chanda and Amarka.
They were very cruel. After finishing his education, when he went back to his father, his father made him sit on his lap. Prahalada then said, “Father, I studied everything and learnt the essence of all.” Hiranyakashyap then asked delightfully, “Tell me my son, what you learnt?” He replied with a smile on his face, “Om Namo Narayanaya.” When his father heard this, he became furious and asked, “Where is your God?” Prahalada then replied that He was everywhere. He then threw his son in to the ocean. But because of his faith, the ocean lifted him out of danger. Like this he was put to many difficult situations.

Prahalada with Lord Narasimha

Prof. A. K. : If God is in all, then He is the One who underwent Shiksha (punishment) in Prahalada.

Swami : There was no Shiksha to suffer. Everything is God. Here we have a father who was a Hari Dweshi (one who hates God) and his son who was Hari Premi (one who loves God). Actually God sent him to teach a lesson to Hiranyakashyap. When Hiranyakashyap went to do penance, he left his wife Leelavati in the Ashram of Narada. Leelavati was pregnant at that time. Narada narrated the glories of Lord Narayana to her, and when she slept, the child in her womb used to listen. Daiva Preetini Nuvvu Nerchukovu, Nuvvu Techhukuntavu (You don’t learn love for God, you get it with you). Who taught a fish to swim?

Prof. A. K. : Swami, are there anybody like Prahalada among men?

Swami : There is no child like Prahalada, but ordinary people are there.
Otherwise how will the world sustain itself?

Prof. A. K. : So Swami, it is in-born. Can’t it be cultivated?

Swami : Yes, it can be. By Sadhana (spiritual practice) and Pramanamu (proof). What is the meaning of Madhava? (Getting no response) Madhava means: Ma = Maya (illusion), creation and Dhava = Master. Madhava means – Master of Maya. He is the Master of creation. Nothing exists without Maya. Maayani Ardhamchesukovaddu, Mitrunigaa Chesuko (Don’t try to understand Maya, but befriend it). A cat kills rats, but at the same time, when it carries its kittens in its mouth, it carefully takes them from one place to another. The same is the case with Maya. It can destroy or even protect.

Prof. A. K. : Can’t Maya be overcome?

Swami : Maya can be overcome by Jnana. Unnadi Lenatlugaa, Lenidi Unnatlugaa Chupinchedi Maya (Maya shows the one which is there as not there, and the one which is not there as it is there). Suppose you are walking in the dark, you see a rope. Initially you are afraid thinking it to be a snake. But when you throw light on it and see, it is only a rope. You then walk over it. The same rope was seen as a snake and also as a rope. The Maya is both Bhrama (illusion) and Brahma (Divine). The rope is Maya here.
Maya is not new. It is always there. Maya is like your shadow. It is with you wherever you walk. It exists even when you are dead.

Prof. A. K. : So, we should recognise it as our shadow?

Swami : When you move, it moves. If we understand that it is like a reflection, then you have found the secret. Here is a story. One day a boy took his cattle to the hills where there were lot of pastures. While the cattle were grazing, he shouted, “My name is Rama”. His words then echoed back to him. He got scared and shouted again. Again his words were echoed back. He thought that someone was there shouting back. He went back to his mother and repeated the story. She laughed at his ignorance and told him that it was his echo and nothing else. Nobody is there; it is Bhrama (illusion). It is only resound. Don’t hate anyone, you will receive it back. You say, “I have done it”. That is Bhrama. It is not you. It is Maya.

Prof. A. K. : So everything is Maya.

Swami : If you open your eyes, you see everything. If you close your eyes, it will become dark. It is upto you. So, the Srushti (creation) is there in the
Drishti (sight). Srushti has no fault. The fault lies in Drishti.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, in Vyavahaarikam (worldly things) also is it the same?

Swami : Yes, in Vyavahaarikam also it is the same. Nenu (I) is not the ego. Nenu is the name of Atma.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, man must give charity. But is the giver superior to the receiver?

Swami : Whatever you do with good feeling is charity. Who is the giver and who is the receiver? You can’t say that the giver is superior to the receiver. Vedanta is very easy.
