The Message of Sri Sathya Sai Baba: In His Words - Part 1

On the Purpose of His Advent

I have come to light the lamp of love in your hearts, to see that it shines day by day with added lustre. I have not come to speak on behalf of any particular Dharma (religion), like the Hindu Dharma. I have not come on any mission of publicity for any sect or creed or cause; nor have I come to collect followers for any doctrine. I have no plan to attract disciples or devotees into My fold or any fold. I have come to tell you of this Universal unitary faith, this Atmic principle, this path of love, this Dharma of Prema, this duty of love, this obligation to love.
- “The Message I Bring”, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 08,
July 04, 1968, Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa

I have not come to set afoot a new cult, I do not want people to be misled on this point. I affirm that this Sai form is the form of all the various names that man uses for the adoration of the Divine. So, I am teaching that no distinction should be made between the names Rama, Krishna, Ishwara, Sai – for they are all My names. You can observe Me and My activities; note how I adhere to righteousness, moral order, truth and universal compassion. That is what I desire you to learn from Me. Many of you plead for a ‘Message’ from Me, to take to the Samiti of which you are members. Well. My life is My message. You elaborate in your lectures the unique powers of Sai, the incidents that are described as miracles in books written on Me by some persons. But I request you not to attach importance to these. Do not exaggerate their significance; the most significant and important power is, let Me tell you, My Prema (love). I may turn the sky into earth, or earth into sky; but that is not the sign of Divine might. It is the Prema, the Sahana, effective universal, ever-present, that is the unique sign.
- “The Revelation”, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 08,
May 17, 1968, Bombay

I do not expect anything from you. Only, develop Love within you. Regard all mankind with fraternal feelings. Recognise all as the children of God. Bear no ill-will or hatred towards anyone. Do not hurt anyone’s feelings. Only such a large-hearted attitude will confer on you limitless bliss. If you are celebrating Swami’s birthday, this is all that I desire from you. Have unity among yourselves. Strive to revive and promote the glory of Bharat.
- “Share in Bhagavan’s Love”, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 23, November 23, 1990, Prasanthi Nilayam

What is My directive? What is it that will please Me? What is it that I desire? Only one thing: Love, Love, Love. That is Sai’s most potent weapon. Was any invitation sent to any of you to come here? So many of you have gathered here attracted solely by the power of Swami’s love.
- “The Avatar and the Devotees”, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 27, November 23, 1994, Prasanthi Nilayam

There is no need to glorify what I have done. I have given back to the people what has been given by them. I have given to you what is essential for you. Nothing is Mine. If anything can be called Mine, it is You. You are My greatest property. If you are happy, I am happy. If you pursue the right path, that is My food. When you are united, I feel happy. Therefore, do not speak about what Swami has done. Swami served to you what you have offered to Him. I have nothing in My hands. People call them empty hands. But this nothing is everything.
 - “Render unto the People what is Theirs”, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 28, November 17, 1995, Prasanthi Nilayam

You should offer your knowledge for the benefit of the people. You should set an example to your fellowmen. Cultivate the spirit of oneness to all mankind. It is to teach this message that the Sai advent has taken place. Sai has come to indicate the omnipresence of God. The Avatar has come down to declare that God is present everywhere. This is as necessary as the need for someone to light a lamp, even if one has a lamp holder, oil and wick. The Avatar comes not only to proclaim the eternal virtues but also to shower His love on mankind but, each one will get the benefit according to the size of the vessel he holds.
- “Not Salaries but Service”, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 29,
July 01, 1996, Prasanthi Nilayam

Utilise the chance of association with Me as much as possible, and endeavor as quickly and as best as you can to follow the directions that I have been giving. Obeying My instructions is enough; it will benefit you more than the most rigorous asceticism. Practice Satya, Dharma, Shanti and Prema, which are dear to Me; resolve to keep those ideals before you ever, in all your thoughts, words and deeds. That can confer on you the summum bonum of mergence in the supreme substance of Divinity.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: His Life is His Message - By Dr. Shashank Shah

Shashank Shah receiving the President of India Gold Medal from Sri Sathya Sai during the Institute Convocation - November 22, 2004

In the Dwapara Yuga, on the battle field of Kurukshetra, Lord Krishna told His dear devotee Arjuna,

“Na Me Parthasti Kartavyam, Trishu Lokeshu Kinchana”
‘Oh, My dear Arjuna, in all the three worlds, I am not bound to perform any action.’

While ours is the Karma Janma (birth due to Karma), His is the Leela Janma (birth for Divine Sport). He acts, only to set an example for the entire mankind to follow so that mankind may emulate His ideal.

Bhagavan has declared on a number of occasions ‘My Life is My Message’. Indeed, every aspect, every facet, every part and phase of Bhagavan’s Avataric sojourn on this planet, is a message for the entire humanity to benefit from.

Swami is my Hero. Every aspect of Swami’s life is worthy of emulation. Every facet of His life has a very important and potent message for each and every one of us. He says, ‘I act in a human way – I eat with you, talk to you, move about with you, joke and play with you so that you can develop kinship with Me. But at the same time, I give you glimpses of My Divinity so that you can aspire to attain those Divine Heights.’

An Ideal Son and an Ideal Student – A True All Rounder

Right from His childhood days, Swami has lived an ideal life. He would take great care of His grandfather – Sri Kondama Raju Garu when He was staying with him. He would cook the food and take care of all his needs – thus exemplifying the ideal of a good son – ‘Suputra’. At the same time, He would go to school and exemplify the ideal of a good student. He would participate in all the school programmes and activities and at the same time would excel in His studies. Thereby, Swami showed that one needs to do well in all facets of one’s life. Doing well in school does not exempt us from performing our duties at home. And, doing our duties at home, does not exempt us from being a true all-rounder in school.

True Selfless Service

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: His Life is His Message

While staying with His brother – Sri Seshama Raju at Uravakonda, Swami used to fill water from the well (which was at quite a distance from the house) twice a day. When the neighbours would question Him as to why He was straining Himself so much, He would say, “It is my duty to serve”. Even when the neighbours complained to His father – Sri Pedda Venkama Raju, Swami replied in a similar manner.

This was the same reply which Swami gave over a half century later, on the completion of the Sri Sathya Sai Water Supply Project for the Anantapur District. When some villagers came as representatives from the various villages which benefited from the project, to express their gratitude to Swami, Swami said, ‘You need not thank Me. In fact, I am grateful to you for giving Me this opportunity to serve you all.’ He also added, ‘In the future too, if there is any such opportunity for Me to serve you all, I will be very happy to do it.’

What greater example can we have of humility and of true service! True service is done without any expectation of return, for everyone – the one who serves, the one who is served and the act of service are all Sai Himself. This is for all of us to keep in mind when we undertake multifarious projects as students of Sai in our respective places of work. This is the feeling that Swami expects us to serve with.

The Promises Fulfilled – Message for all Humanity

The promise which Swami had given to His Mother - Smt. Easwaramma was kept up by Him both in letter and spirit. For, not only did He provide basic schooling, medical care and water supply to the village of Puttaparthi, but He also set up Institutions which are models of excellence, for the whole world to emulate and derive inspiration from. There were many occasions of apparent shortage of funds for the mammoth projects. But the Divine assurance was, ‘In this holy land of Bharat, if any individual undertakes a noble task selflessly, there will be no dearth of any resources – monetary or otherwise’. And true to His word, funds and all other kinds of help came flowing in from all over the world. A hospital (specialising in tertiary health care facilities) which could be the envy of any hospital in the developed world, was built in a record time. Treatment is rendered to all, irrespective of differences of any kind, absolutely free of cost (unheard of in any part of the globe!). The rest is history.

A Water Supply Project hitherto unaccomplished elsewhere, was built in a record time. No other private trust anywhere else in the world has undertaken a social benefit project of this magnitude. What the government could not accomplish in over a century, Swami accomplished in a matter of 18 months. Through this Swami showed that where there is a will there is a way.

Sri Sathya Sai University and the Educational Complexes at Prasanthi Nilayam

The Institute of Higher Learning, which was earlier denied permission to start functioning (because according to the government authorities it was not possible to start a University in such a rural environment) has today become the cynosure of all eyes for it has been accredited with the A++ ranking by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) set up by the University Grants Commission. This is the highest ranking received by any University in India. Not only this, the Committee went on to place on record the following, ‘The Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning is the crest jewel of the University Education System in India and the model of education followed in this Institution is worthy of emulation by all other systems of higher education in the country and elsewhere.’

The True Purpose of the Divine Temples of Learning, Healing and Life

Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Whitefield

An Institute of Higher Learning, Institutes of Higher Medical Sciences and the Water Supply Projects are not the sole purpose of the Avataric Mission. These are in reality, not going to solve all the education, health and water related problems of the world. These are only role models for all of us; so that we may, in our own way, follow suit and undertake activities which will benefit all mankind. That is the purpose of these temples of learning, healing and life.

The Divine Mission

Many decades ago, in one of His Discourses Swami declared, ‘Mine is the Vajra Sankalpa – the diamond like resolution; whatever I Will, must come to fruition. Even if all the fourteen worlds were to come together against Me, the work and Mission which I have come to accomplish will not swerve by an inch.’ That is the kind of confidence which Swami expects each and every one of us to have. Anyone who is on the path of Sathya and Dharma is bound to succeed in all his endeavours for Satyameva Jayate (Truth alone Triumphs) and Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha (Dharma protects the one who follows it).

Sri Sathya Sai Baba: His Life is His Message

Action – The Most Powerful Medium of Communication

Swami has displayed through His life, that the best way to silence one’s critics is to answer their questions by one’s action. That is the best way to reply, for actions speak louder than words. Time and again Swami has reiterated this fact. If we have to be His representatives in His mission, we have to be the ideals and through our action and conduct, display to the world that we are the children of Sai. If there is anything that Swami has taught us through the last 80 years of His earthly sojourn, it is this. If we have been the recipients of His Infinite Love and Grace, of the title ‘My Property’ and the proximity which could be the envy of the Devas of the highest heavens (as He puts it), it is our duty that through our virtuous conduct and exemplary life, we should prove ourselves worthy of what we have received.

In Conclusion

Through this article, I have made a humble attempt to gather and highlight a few of the pearls from the vast ocean of the life of the Lord which are shining examples worthy of emulation in our very own day to day life. I would like to reiterate them as follows:
Through His childhood Swami has displayed that an ideal son excels not only in the performance of his duties at home but also shines forth as an ideal student in school; who, through his conduct and character proves to be a real ‘Suputra’.
True service is selflessly done without any expectation of reward. The doer, the receiver and the act of service are all in reality one and the same - Sai Himself.
If any activity is done with a pure motive for the benefit of others, it is bound to succeed inspite of all adverse circumstances.
An individual must undertake acts of service in such a manner that not only are they models of excellence in themselves, but they are instruments of motivation for others to follow suit.
The most powerful medium of communication is Action. The Mahavakya of Leadership says, ‘To Be, To Do, To See, To Tell’. Once one is and one does, the need to tell becomes superfluous. As Swami often says – ‘Acharanamlo Pettali’ (it is necessary to put into action). Our actions are the most powerful medium to silence our critics. Do all the good that you can to all the people you can and the multiplier effect of the benefit is bound to occur.
Above all, His mission is bound to succeed irrespective of the innumerable obstacles that may apparently appear to come in its way. In His 43rd Birthday Discourse on 23rd November, 1968, Bhagawan declared, ‘Few people believe that things will change and that the Golden Age of peace and harmony for all mankind will actually dawn. Be assured that this Dharmaswarupa – this Divine Body has not come in vain. It will accomplish the Mission which it has taken upon itself for the benefit of all mankind.’

What greater proof is required than this, of our greatest good fortune to have been blessed to witness and above all participate as His chosen instruments in His Divine Mission!

I offer my gratitude to Swami and pray that we may be those ideal children He always wanted us to be; to be sweet and fragrant flowers in His Heavenly Garden and shining stars in His Splendorous Sky.

Trayee Sessions - Part 2

Sri Sathya Sai in Trayee Brindavan

Friday, April 27, 2001

Turning to Brindavan Warden:

Swami : Tell the good news. (Swami told the news softly to Warden.)

Warden : I have good news to share with you all. We have a student who has completed B.Sc. and M.Sc. at our Institute, and Swami has now blessed him to work on the Heart-Lung machine in the Super Speciality Hospital at Whitefield. His mother had a tumour in the stomach for the last 30 years. No doctor wanted to operate it. She was admitted in our General Hospital last night.

Swami : Not yesterday, this morning. The tumour was removed this morning. There was no pain at all. (Swami asked the student to get up. To all the boys) This boy’s mother. (To the student) What did you pass?

Student : Swami, M.Sc.

Swami : What work you do in the Hospital?

Student : Swami, I am incharge of the Heart-Lung machine.

Swami : Even he didn’t know about the operation. At 1.30 pm, they rang up from the Super Speciality Hospital for blood. He came to know then and took the blood. (To the student) Have you seen your mother?

Student : Yes, Swami.

Swami : Be happy. (Swami then sat on the Jhoola.) Where is Dilshad Khan?

(To Brindavan Warden) You didn’t call him?

B. Warden : Shall I call him?

Swami : (Indicating Sri V. Srinivasan) All India Organisation Chairman.

(Sri V. Srinivasan came forward. To the Brindavan Warden) Introduce him. Great business man, world-renowned, and has been with Swami for over 30 years. (Brindavan Warden introduced Sri Srinivasan. When he mentioned that even Sri Srinivasan’s father was a devotee of Swami)

His father built South Prasanthi. Not with bricks or stone.

Warden then shared that South Prasanthi was built out of precast blocks. Sri Srinivasan took Namaskar and started to speak. In the middle of his speech, Swami asked him to tell about (Prince) Charles. Sri Srinivasan then spoke about how Price Charles, during his visit to India, had specially enquired about Swami from him (when he was the President of the Confederation of Indian Industry). Swami blessed Sri Srinivasan after his speech. Swami then called a teacher.

Swami : Speak about the summer vacations when you went to your place.

(Before the teacher started, to a student) Going to London?

Student : No, Swami.

When the teacher started his speech addressing, “Dear Brothers”, Swami interjected telling, “No sisters?” He told the Sanskrit Shloka starting, “Tyaja Durjana Samsargam, Bhaja Sadhu Samagamam”, Swami completed it, “Kuru Punyamahoratram…” Swami blessed the teacher after his speech. Swami got up from the Jhoola saying, “Hmm… Get up.”

Aarti was offered at 5.30 pm. Swami spoke to a Hospital Boy while going back. While handing over Prasadam trays to the students, Swami picked and showed the day’s Prasadam – mango. He picked a mango, cut across the students and gave it to Sri Ashok Singhal, President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) who was standing there.

A Management Degree is for a Life, not just for a Living: Sri Sathya Sai Perspective

With the aim of getting a degree or a job, students take up an academic programme (formal study) which could be referred to as object. Object is only the responsibility, which is in the head. However, the subject should be in the heart. One should follow the heart. If students have the subject in their heart, it will stay with them lifelong. Whereas if it is in mind, it will stay only till the examination. After the examination, in a week there would be no answers remaining with the students in their memory. Of what value is this study then, if it is so impermanent? If one needs it again, one would be required to consult one’s books again. If it is imprinted in the heart, there is no need for a book and one will get the right answer. The success of a management graduate and the future executive lies in these minute things, wherein every aspect would have to be imprinted in the heart.

Now take knowledge, or intelligence. In the common parlance, it is said that intelligence is knowledge or vice-versa. Knowledge is a part within the physical body (brain), which forms part of the nervous system, whereas the intelligence is connected with the Atman. There is a lot of difference between the two. Intelligence is not of the nature of the body or the world; it is immortal in nature. There is no forgetfulness in case of intelligence; whereas in case of knowledge, there is forgetfulness. Wakefulness and sleep do not exist for intelligence. Neither does it have a dream state. These exist only for the knowledge. Students should understand this difference clearly.

For everything, Buddhi (intelligence) exists as the charioteer. This Buddhi drives the chariot, but it is not the chariot. Just because the driver sits in the car, will he become the car? The driver is different from the car. Though one lives inside the house, one is not the house. The individual and the house are two different things. In the same way, the body is like the house and the Atman resides in it. Therefore, Atman is not the body.

This Atman energizes everything in a human being. The Atman is the Master of the body, but not the body itself. Normally, one identifies oneself with the body. First, we have to ask or tell ourselves, “This is my body, this is my mind, this is my Buddhi but I am separate from my body, mind and Buddhi”. In this process, one must enquire “Who am I?” Only then will one realise who one is.  Now, suppose one puts the question to oneself: “Who am I?” The response could be, “I am Shrinivas.” Then the question that follows is, “Who named you Shrinivas?” Your parents christened you on the twelfth day as: Shrinivas, Rama, Krishna or Govind. What about the first twelve days before the names have been given to the new born babies? There was no name for the first twelve days. Therefore, there is neither birth nor death for the Atman. All these perspectives have to be probed well. There would be a significant growth in the intelligence of students provided they are prepared in this way in a logical manner.

Sri Sathya Sai visits Ooty and Kodaikanal - 1989

Saturday, April 08, 1989
to Thursday, May 11, 1989

Sri Sathya Sai in the Ooty Hills
Bhagavan left Brindavan for Ooty accompanied by 27 Institute students and staff of the Institute early in the morning on April 8th 1989. Enroute, He halted at Mysore for a short while before proceeding to Ooty. The Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University hosted Bhagavan and His party for a few hours.

He left Mysore for Ooty on 10th. Bhagavan travelled with the boys in the bus for sometime and shifted to His car near Bandipur forest. He stayed with His group at Ooty for 2 days. Bhagavan attended the Nandanvan school assembly on 11th morning, witnessed their Sports Meet and distributed prizes to the children. In the evening, before the cultural programme of the school children, Bhagavan Himself helped with the make-up of the boys participating in the programme. Bhagavan blessed the children with Padanamaskar and left for Kodaikanal.
Sri Sathya Sai in front of the Sai Sruthi Mandir - Kodaikanal
Bhagavan stayed in Sai Shruti  at Kodaikanal from the 11th of April to the 7th of May. Sri Rama Navami was celebrated in Sai Shruti on 14th April. In that Discourse He elaborated on the life and Message of Lord Rama. He said:

"There is no Bharatiya who has not heard the story of Rama, nor is there a village in Bharat without a Rama temple. From time immemorial, every individual in Bharat has regarded Sri Rama's life as an ideal and has sought to sanctify every moment of his life by living up to it. Bharat has always considered the life of anyone devoid of spirituality as utterly valueless. Sri Ramachandra was born on a day when the planet Sukra (Venus) enters Meena (Pisces). The month of His advent marks the beginning of Vasanta Ritu (Spring). It is the time when the sun enters Mesha Rashi (Aries). Sri Rama's incarnation as a human being was for the purpose of promoting peace and happiness in the world. "Ramo Vigrahavan Dharmah" ("Rama is the very embodiment of Righteousness"). It was as if Righteousness itself had incarnated on earth.

Dharma and Rama are inseparable

Rama's life falls in two parts: the earlier and the later. In the earlier part, Rama figures as the heroic warrior who vanquished powerful persons like Parashurama, Vali and Ravana. Rama excelled not only in physical strength but also in intelligence and character. It is impossible to describe all the virtues of Rama. Every Avatar has six types of powers: all-encompassing Prosperity, Righteousness, Fame, Wealth, Wisdom and Renunciation (or non-attachment). God is the possessor of these six attributes. Sri Rama had all these six attributes in equal measure. Every Avatar of God in every age and every place has these six attributes.

Importance of Truth and Righteousness
In the Ramayana Satya (Truth) and Dharma (Righteousness) are the most important concepts. The Vedas, which are regarded as their very life-breath by Bharatiyas, have proclaimed: "Satyam Vada; Dharmam Chara" (Speak the Truth; Act Righteously). In order to honour the plighted word of his father, Rama elected to go to the forest leaving Ayodhya. Truth is the foundation for all righteousness. There is no greater religion than truth. Rama stood out as an upholder of Truth to fulfill the promise of his father, to maintain the traditions of his Ikshvaku dynasty, to protect his country and for the sake of the welfare of the world. Everyone who calls himself a human being should stand up for truth in the same manner. It is said of Mahatmas (evolved men) that what they speak, what they think and what they do are in perfect accord. In the case of the wicked, their thoughts, words and deeds are at a variance with each other. By these definitions Rama was a Mahatma and Ravana was a Duratma (an evil being).

Three women symbolising the three Gunas

In the first twelve years of Rama's life, He encountered three types of women. When he went with the sage Vishwamitra to protect his sacrifice, he encountered the ogress Tataki. He put an end to her without any compunction or aversion. After Vishwamitra's sacrifice was completed, Rama went with the sage to Mithila. On the way, he came across Ahalya, who had been transformed into a stone. He gave her life, absolved her of sin through penitence and restored her to her husband. At Mithila, he encountered Sita. He accepted Sita without any hesitation. What is the inner meaning of these three incidents? They show that even from his boyhood Rama displayed extraordinary qualities and stood out as an example to the world. Tataki, the first woman he encountered symbolises the Tamas quality. He destroyed the Tamasic quality. Ahalya represents the Rajo Guna. He taught the right lesson to Ahalya, purified her and sent her safely to her place. He took to himself Sita who represented the Satwic quality. Bhagavan approves of and accepts only that which is Satwic. He values the Satwic quality. He protects and fosters it.
Sri Rama redeems Ahalya
Today all the three Gunas - Tamas, Rajas and Satwa are present in man in varying proportions. What does the presence of the Tamo Guna signify? It is natural for the Tamasic person to regard untruth as truth, wrong as right, evil as good. Although the phenomenal world is impermanent and illusory, the Tamasic minded person regards it as permanent and real. The Rajasic person lacks the power of discrimination and yielding to likes and dislikes behaves without restraint. Impulsive action is characteristic of persons in whom the Rajo Guna is predominant. Because of hasty and impulsive action, they are subject to all kinds of difficulties. In the process, they waste their lives. People should try to avoid acting in haste. "Haste makes waste, waste makes worry. So do not be in a hurry." In the quest for the Divine, there should be no hurry. Purity and serenity are required for God-realisation. There can be no happiness for the man who lacks peace. Saint Thyagaraja said in one of his songs: “Without peace, there is no happiness.” Thyagaraja was a great devotee of Rama. As a devotee, he had numerous experiences which he conveyed for the world through his songs.

Triple power of the name Rama

What are the inner meanings of the name Rama? The' three syllables 'R', 'A' and 'Ma' indicate the three causes for human birth, namely Papamu (the sins one has committed), Thapamu (the troubles one experiences) and Ajnanamu (one's ignorance). 'Ra' represents the root letter for Agni. 'Aa' represents the letter for the moon. 'Ma' represents the root letter for the sun. What does Agni signify? It destroys everything and reduces it to ashes. The letter 'R' has the power to destroy all the sins committed by man. The letter 'Aa' (symbolising the moon) has the powers of cooling the fevers man suffers from and conferring peace on him. 'Ma' represents the sun who dispels the darkness of ignorance and confers illumination of wisdom. Hence, the word Rama has the right triple power of destroying sins, conferring peace and dispelling ignorance.
Thyagaraja (1767-1847)
When you utter the word 'Ram', you first open the mouth with the sound 'Ra'. All your sins go out when your mouth is open. When you utter 'M' by closing the mouth, the entry is barred against the sins that have gone out. Everyone should recognise the sweetness, the sacredness and the divinity enshrined in the name 'Rama'. It was for this reason that Thyagaraja sang: “Oh mind! Contemplate on the name of Rama with full awareness of its power.” It is good to utter the name Rama with full understanding of all that it signifies. But even without that understanding the chanting of the name has the power to destroy all sins.

Offer your heart to the Divine

Whatever you do, do it not for pleasing others, but for pleasing the Indweller in your heart, for your inner satisfaction. This means acting according to the dictates of your conscience. Every such act will please the Divine. To derive self-satisfaction from your actions, you have to cultivate faith. When there is satisfaction, there is readiness for sacrifice. Through sacrifice, the Divine is realised. Your faith should be unwavering like that of the Pandavas in Sri Krishna. All spiritual aspirants and devotees like Thyagaraja have had to experience many trials and tribulations.

Pothana (1450-1510)
Even Pothana, the author of the Telugu Bhagvatam, was subjected to many pressures and ordeals to compel him to dedicate his work to a local chieftain. Pothana stood firm because of his strong faith in Sri Rama. Rather than dedicate his works to a mere mortal, he was prepared to offer his heart and soul to Rama. Pothana totally surrendered to Sri Rama. He declared: "All that I have is yours. Whatever I receive or offer comes from you. I cannot claim anything that is mine own."

Men go on pilgrimages to various holy places. When they are in Benares they offer the Ganga water to the Ganga uttering the names of the Lord. What is the special value of such an offering? You must offer the Lord the heart that He has given you. This is true surrender. Lakshmana is the supreme exemplar of the doctrine of Sharanagati (surrender). “I offer my wealth, family and everything to you, Oh Rama! Protect me, who has taken refuge in you.” It was this total surrender which impelled Rama to observe, when Lakshmana lay stricken in the battlefield in Lanka: “Wives and kinsmen can be got in any country. But where can one get a brother born from the same loins?" Rama thus exemplified the depth of fraternal attachment. The mutual love between Rama and Lakshmana was of the highest order. After the fall of Ravana, Sugriva, Vibhishana and others approached Rama and appealed to him to rule over Lanka, which was a richly endowed land. Rama turned down the request saying that he could not give up his mother or his Motherland. Rama serves as an example to humanity.

Face troubles with faith in God

Today everybody utters Ram, Ram. But very few follow the example set by Rama. They are not true devotees of Rama. At best they may be described as "part-time devotees." True devotion means perpetual remembrance of the name of the Lord and constant meditation on that name, cherishing the figure of Rama in the heart. You should be prepared to face the vicissitudes of life with firm faith in God. It is during times of difficulties that God is remembered. To confront difficulties with faith is itself a spiritual discipline. Although Rama was the son of the Emperor Dasharatha and son-in-law of King Janaka, he had to face many ordeals in life for the sake of upholding Dharma. The Pandavas went through many difficulties for the sake of adhering to righteousness and hence their name and fame remain forever. You should pray to the Lord to give you the strength to bear all troubles and face all difficulties. If you have even an atom of Grace of the Lord, a mountain of troubles can be overcome. Chaitanya declared: “If a fraction of the time that is spent in worrying about wealth, provisions, wife, children, friends and business is devoted to contemplation on the feet of the Divine, one can face the messengers of death without fear and cross the Ocean of Samsara!”

It is not necessary to devote many hours to prayer. It is enough if one thinks of God with all his heart and offers himself even for a few moments. A single match stick when it is struck can dispel the darkness in a room that has remained closed for years. Mountains of cotton can be burnt down by a single spark. Likewise, wholehearted chanting of the name of Rama even once can destroy mountains of sins. But the chanting should not be done mechanically like playing a gramophone record. It should emanate from the depths of the heart. Having been born in this sacred land of Bharat, having before you the ideal example of Rama avatar, you must seek to redeem your lives, by living up to Rama's ideals and proclaiming them to the world. Remember the name of Rama with love. God can be realised only through love and by no other means.”

For over a period of 10 days, Bhagavan gave a series of revealing Discourses on the life and teachings of Lord Krishna. Bhagavan also thrilled the students by narrating the previous lives of many of the important characters in Bhagawatam, explaining how the inexorable law of Karma operates. During the Discourses, Bhagavan created jewels worn by the notable figures of the Dwapara Yuga.

Easwaramma Day was celebrated in Sai Shruti on 6th May. During His stay at Kodaikanal, the widening of the Bhajan hall in Sai Shruti was done. The students and the devotees were given a golden chance to participate in the renovation work. Everyday Bhagavan would watch them during work and guide them. He would walk among them and distribute Prasadam to each one of them. This Seva continued even on 6th May.
Enroute to Whitefield from Kodaikanal, Bhagavan halted at Palani and blessed the Bhajan Mandali there. He then reached Tirupur to bless the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Tirupur Mandir and gave a Discourse. From there He reached Podanur, inaugurated the Sai Mandir and witnessed Bal Vikas programmes. He then visited the Kuppanayakan Palayam and performed the installation of the Kaliamman idol in the Sathya Kali Amman Temple. He also inaugurated a community centre and a vocational centre for women. Bhagavan graced the Sai Mandir in Annapuranipetai at Mettupalyam and visited the Homeopathy hospital run by the local Samiti.

Three Essentials of Life

Three things are pointed out to man: never believe this world, never forget God, and never be afraid of death. These three are essential. You should have complete faith in God. Do not believe this world because the world changes from moment to moment. Never forget God. Never be afraid of death. In Vedantic parlance, these are the chief principles. It is foolishness to confine Divinity to a particular place and situation. Divinity is omnipresent. There is no place without Divinity. There is no form without it. There is no material without it. It is present in both the mobile and immobile. Scientists say that everything is made up of atoms. The whole world, from the piece of wood to the speaker, is made up of atoms. Everything is a combination of atomic power. So they all call it an atom. But spiritualists call it power. They call it energy. There is difference in the name, but the form is the same. Wherever there is an atom, there is Divinity. Every atom has a definite form. There is no atom without a form.

When there is full faith in God, we should know that God resides in our heart. God has many forms. God is cosmic with varied forms. The mountains are made up of rock, forests of trees, oceans of water, earth of mud and human body of flesh. Everything is a combination of five elements and hence everything is a manifestation of God. God is not a separate form. To demonstrate this fact to blind and ignorant people, God descends as an Avatar.

All creatures on earth perform their own duty. Animals, birds, beasts and mosquitoes discharge their duty scrupulously. It is only man who has forgotten his responsibilities. Birds follow season and reason, but man has no season and no reason. It is for this reason that God comes down in human form to correct humanity. If an eagle comes to you and points out your faults, you will throw stones and drive it away. This is the reason why he takes human form. Scientists spent all the time in experimenting. Yet they are devoid of experience. What is it that you get out of these experiments? Yesterday’s discoveries look new today and today's will look new tomorrow. This is all that is to it. There is no use of this. The path of devotion is easier than wisdom. Wisdom is very difficult. It is not given to everybody. Direct your attention towards God. Then everything will come to you. There is no other thing beyond this devotion. With joy and ecstasy, repeat God’s name. You can then capture everything in this world.

My Days with Sri Sathya Sai Baba - By N. Sudhindran

Sudhindran with Sri Sathya Sai in Kodaikanal (2007)

“You are not one, but three;
The one you think you are – the Body,
The one others think you are – the Mind,
The one you really are – the Atma.”
- Sri Sathya Sai Baba

When I attended the first day of the MBA programme at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, I realised that the degree meant more than ‘Master of Business Administration’. It stood for Mind, Body and Atma. Truly, one of the most salient and unique aspects of the Sri Sathya Sai Philosophy of Education is the ‘Integral System of Education’ that recognises the three aspects of human personality and caters to their needs.

Elsewhere, the students are well-trained in Management skills and techniques and coached to become super-efficient managers, and sadly though, it stops with that. These young managers tirelessly and aggressively, work their way up the corporate ladder, become experts in their field of activity and earn for themselves a fat salary to support a sophisticated and comfortable life through retirement. While there is nothing wrong about this, these managers have lost out on something very important – their hearts’ needs.

Fortunately for us, our Revered Chancellor and our Dear Lord, has shown the right way to lead happy, wholesome and balanced lives… something many of our counterparts elsewhere have not had the fortune of learning about.

‘Ihamanu Sukhayimpa Hemathaaraka Vidya, Paramanu Sukhayimpa Brahmavidya’

We, the students of Bhagawan, not only receive the academic degrees to help us earn our living in this world, but also the spiritual knowledge that assures us of lasting happiness and bliss – here and hereafter. Education is not limited to the classrooms of the Institute. In fact, the Hostel and the Mandir sessions in the presence of Bhagawan are the places where the most important lessons are learnt. Every minute of our student lives here, brings home those little truths that enrich our way of thinking and our lives.

When I look back at the student days in this hallowed Institute, I realise how subtly, yet surely, Bhagawan was working on me simultaneously at various levels in a synchronized manner to mould me into a better human being. Waking up with a prayer to the Lord to bless us with strength and wisdom to go through the day with His presence beside us, we used to sprint out of the Hostel in tracksuit and shoes in all our youthful exuberance. Warming up and stretching exercises would wrinkle out any physical or mental creases of sluggishness. Greeting each other with a warm and cheerful “Sairam” as we walk into the classrooms, we would resume our studies with renewed intellectual vigour. As our minds were busy grasping the various techniques and strategies of the world of Management, the hands of the clock would slowly move to quarter past two in the afternoon.

Then it’s time to grab a snack and rush to the Mandir to catch a glimpse of our Lord as He slowly moves among the devotees, granting Darshan, materialising Vibhuti, accepting letters and speaking comforting words to soothe their aching hearts before finally disappearing into the interview room. Endless moments of observation for the slightest movement in the portico and waiting to see if the Orange Robe would come out towards the white waves of the restless sea of students…. Silent prayers emanate from many hearts and fill the Mandir with almost an audible hum of the Pranava. Finally, unable to hold Himself away any longer, the Shepherd rushes towards His flock. Here and there a gentle pat on the cheek, a humorous remark about somebody, a gentle advice, a firm warning, and words of immense spiritual potency uttered almost casually … and the love story unfolds day after day, year after year.

Painting, poetry, quiz, drama, musical orchestra… and many such activities to bring out the latent talents and skills that are surprisingly hidden within us for long years. It’s all magical when we realise how Swami’s Love can inspire us and through us, can inspire many people around us.

The eleventh day of January is a date that conjures up sweet memories in every Sai Student’s mind. After weeks of strenuous practice in the hot sun, when the final decisive moment arrives, how effortlessly we succeed in front of our Dear Lord! Or when we think that we have miserably failed and are ashamed even to look towards the dais, how our Dear Mother Sai claps in great joy as if He is mightily pleased with our feat, and how enthusiastically He shares His delight with the guests around Him. “That special smile and ‘Abhayahastha’ was definitely meant for me,” each one of us feel in our hearts. The photograph sessions in the Mandir are evidences of those glorious moments where the Loving Mother posed with Her children who did Her proud in front of everyone.

What to speak of the numerous opportunities that would come our way in the form of mega projects that Bhagawan would undertake like Grama Seva, where we would be the direct beneficiaries of His Love and attention while the multitudes gratefully partook of the Prasadam that Swami had sent them through us. The Management lessons that we learnt and the firsthand knowledge of the living conditions of our fellow beings that we gathered, are something that no book or lecture could ever have brought home so effectively.

Each minute of those student days were filled with happiness and learning. In this context, a verse from the Sri Rudram comes to my mind:

Namo Shambhave Cha Mayobhave Cha
Namo Shankaraya Cha Mayaskaraya Cha

Salutations to the One, Who is the Source of worldly happiness and spiritual bliss. Salutations to the Bestower of worldly happiness and spiritual bliss.

How true it is of our own Lord. Where else can we get this kind of complete happiness, but at His Lotus Feet? This gift of education that He has granted us is really the greatest boon anyone can ever aspire for. It’s our responsibility to live up to His expectations and prove ourselves worthy of it.

In conclusion, I would like to offer my heartfelt gratitude to MBA: My Beloved Antaryaami.
