Sri Sathya Sai Expounds on the 5 Ds of Life – Part 1

Sri Sathya Sai Speaks
The  universe  itself  is  a  university  in  which every human  being  is  a  student. Every student pursues one subject and acquires a degree. Each one chooses a subject he likes. But, whatever different subjects they may study, there is one thing common to all of them, one common pursuit and goal – to obtain the degree of Divine Love. In the cosmic university, though there are scientific, political, economic and other studies, what is fundamental to all of them is the spiritual knowledge.

Even in the spiritual field there are special subjects. There is one group which may be described as the five D's – Dedication, Devotion, Discipline, Discrimination and Determination. Those who have mastered the five D's are qualified to receive God's love.

1. Dedication

Dedication means offering. As soon as Swami arrived, teachers and students made offerings of flowers and offered their salutations. The flower symbolises the heart. When you offer the flower of your heart to the Lord, it should be free from the pest of desire, hatred, envy, greed and the like. Only flowers are offered to the Lord or those whom you revere. The flower of the heart is subject to infestation by two evil creatures: One is Ahamkara (ego); the other is Asuya (jealousy). Ego is based on seven different factors – wealth, physical prowess, birth, scholarship, beauty, power and penance. Of these, the arrogance born of wealth is to be despised most. As long as this Ahamkara is predominant, it is impossible to recognise the Divine or one's spiritual reality. Ego is a great barrier between the individual and God. It has to be totally demolished. Pride of wealth is another human failing, which causes the downfall of man. All forms of pride, based  on birth,  wealth,  power  or  scholarship  have  to  be  given up  totally.  Only when egoistic pride is offered as a sacrifice at the altar of the Divine can man discover his true nature. This is the Dedication that is called for as the first step in the spiritual journey.

2. Devotion

Next is Devotion. This is the highest form of love. “Service to Hrishikesha (God) is known as Bhakti (devotion),” says the Sutra. Devotion means constant contemplation of God. The term ‘Bhakti’ is derived from the root Bhaj (to worship). Devotion means loving contemplation of God, repetition of His name, worshipping Him and doing penance for Him. Service to the Lord is the highest expression of devotion. There is nothing which is not attainable through loving service to the Divine.

Devotion does not mean merely singing Bhajans or performing Puja. These forms of devotion at present are based on some kind of self-interest and self-seeking.  True devotion should be free from selfishness of any kind. Devotion is not something to be proclaimed or demonstrated. Exhibitionistic devotion may result in a disaster. True devotion should be an expression of Love – both internally and externally.

3. Discipline

Next comes Discipline. This is most essential for students. From the moment you wake up, you have to carry out your morning ablutions, meditate on God and then do your prescribed duties in an orderly manner without deviating from the regular routine. Variations in the routine from day to day are undesirable. You should not wake up at one hour on one day and at a different time on another day. The day’s activities should be regulated by the same schedule. Immediately after finishing the morning chores, one should devote at least a few minutes to the loving meditation on God, in the calm and serene atmosphere of the morning. The human state is based upon regulation and self-control. These have to be strictly adhered to in daily life.

Sri Sathya Sai: The Divine Destination – By Dinesh Bhatija

Dinesh Bhatija with Sri Sathya Sai in the Sai Kuulwant Hall
Even before one ventures into trying and conveying to the reader his thoughts, and feelings about the Lord of contemporary times, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the writer is assured of one thing, that the author is a total and complete failure. Hence the reader is requested not to blame the author either for inadequacy of his literary skills or for his limited perception and understanding of the Lord. I pay my humble and loving salutations to the Lord who is beyond the strongest and smartest brains, bigger than the biggest, lighter than the lightest.

However on deep examination we find that our Swami’s creation i.e. the universe is completely symmetrical .There is bad and there is good. There is heat and there is cold. Similarly our incomprehensible Lord can be conquered in full by tapping on his weakness- a heartfelt prayer. The Lord is always hungry for a little bit of love. Yes, a little bit of pure love and is helplessly conquered.

The devotee now says, “Lord your time is up. You are now mine.” The Lord with open arms, beaming smile and with a twinkle in his eyes says, ”Oh! how long I have waited for this moment. Come take me.” There are tears in the eyes of the Lord and the devotee as well. There is peace. There is joy and continuous overflow of tears in the embrace which follows, for the desperate one has now reached the Divine destination.

Bhagavan embraced our family when my aunt who was a six year old girl then, was born as a victim of  the deadly disease, polio. The best of the doctors employed their every bit of medical knowledge but, her body wouldn’t respond to any kind of treatment and the mortal medical experts gave the verdict that she would remain a dwarf for life. She was given polio boots and had to frequently change them so as to be able to walk. Her life was in utter shambles.

In the desert of utter hopelessness there appeared the oasis of hope. A ray of light shone in the dungeon of darkness when my grandparents came to know about Him, Sai Baba of Puttaparthi. A series of dramatic events followed. In those days there used to be a handful of people who used to come to Prashanti Nilayam for Darshan. The Lord arrived in all His splendour and majesty. When my grandmother mentioned about the little girl’s disease, He just waved His hand, materialized Vibhuti and asked the girl to mix the Vibhuti with oil and apply it on her legs, and she would be alright.

The many trophies and cups which she won for standing first in various running race competitions and sprints conducted in the school bore testimony to the gracious cure effected by the Lord. The disability had disappeared. She was cured in a matter of days!

The Divine glory of the Lord is unstoppable. Similarly my pen is unstoppable when I wish to write about another of His “Visiting Cards”.
Sri Sathya Sai blessing Dinesh with a ring
My uncle a workaholic man had gone out for work at six am in the morning. He was riding the bike at top speed. He collided against a boulder. His tongue was completely severed except for a small portion that hung to the corner of his mouth.

The doctors stitched the tongue back to shape but said that they were uncertain about his power to speak ever again in his life. However one person seemed certain that he would speak, my grandmother, as she had deep rooted faith in Bhagavan.

The family came rushing to Mother Sai who again as a solution said,”Chinta Kyon Karta Hai, Hum Hai Na” (why do you worry. I am there for you).  It was Vaikuntha Ekadashi day and Bhagavan was distributing nectar which he had materialized for the masses who had gathered at Brindavan. He gave little bit of the sweet nectar to my grandmother also. It is our duty to win the grace of the Lord for, the Lord is most compassionate. My Uncle who could not take in a morsel of food due to his damaged tongue at that time now continuously extols the glory of the Lord who granted him a new life.

Even something as mundane as a financial problem was taken care of by the Lord. When my grandfather who was heavily in debt approached the Lord for guidance, the Lord asked him to open a manufacturing concern and even christened it as Sai Baba Industries and said, “I will take care”. Thanks to Bhagavan’s blessings, the debt ridden old man with little source of income and five children to feed owned a factory which manufactured all sorts of electrical goods ranging from ceiling fans to emergency lamps.

I would like to conclude my article by narrating an incident which testifies to the compassion and omniscience of our Bhagavan. My grandfather was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to worship with utmost devotion a Shiva Lingam and would eat only after worshipping the Lingam.

When my grandfather once knelt down at the feet of Bhagavan, the Lord said,”How can I ever forsake you who worships me every day without fail.” Bhagavan is Lord Eshwara Himself. Bhagavan entered into our family at a time when we were desperately in need of Him. He was like the wish fulfilling tree who bounteously bestowed his blessings and gave us hope and succour. But for him our family would have been lost in the labyrinth of time. He showed us the way from we to Him, the Divine Destination.

The Uniqueness of the Sri Sathya Sai Institutes of Higher Medical Sciences

Sunday, June 30, 2002

Swami turned towards the interview room after walking through the ladies side after Darshan. Seeing the students sitting there:

Swami : Why did you all come early today?

Students : Swami today is Sunday.

Swami then blessed a group of lady doctors from Chennai by listening to their songs. After the singing, Swami called one of the doctors.

Swami : (To the students) She is a very great doctor. She is very famous in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. They are conducting summer camps now in villages around Chennai. There is a doctor’s conference in Chennai now. Last time it was in Bangalore. They conduct it every year. They are doing a lot of service. Till now they have treated 3,000 patients. There is no charge at all. The service they are doing is totally free. She is a singer too. She had given a performance here previously. She is also a good Tabla player, harmonist, and a good doctor. (Approaching towards the chair, to the school students) What was your tiffin (afternoon refreshments in the Hostel)?

Students : Swami, buns.

Swami : (To the Institute students) What was your Tiffin?

Students : Swami, biscuits.

Swami : In Primary School they give two items. One sweet and the other hot. (Turning towards the Music College students) How many Music College students got ‘O’ grade? (The students raise their hands. To one of the students) Are you a vocalist or an instrumentalist?

Student : Swami, vocalist.

Swami : What did you sing for the exam?

Student : Swami, Keertana.

Swami : Which Keertana

Student : Swami, Apparama Bhakti.

Swami : (Calls a student holding card) What is this?

Student : Swami please come to Hostel.

Swami : Where is the Hostel? (After the pause) This is your Hostel (pointing to the Mandir. After the student goes back to his place) Who all want to become doctors? There are four seats. I will send them. (Few students raise their hands. Swami asks one of the boys) What are you studying?

Student : Swami, Chemistry.

Swami : How can Chemistry boys do M.B.B.S.? I want Biology students. (Turning to the teachers) A devotee has reserved 10 seats. Each seat is 20 lakhs.
(To another student) What are you studying?

Student : Swami, M.B.A. (Marketing).

Swami : (To a school student) Where do you come from?

Student : Swami, Muddenahalli.

Swami : How many years did you study there?

Student : Swami, three years. From 8th class to 10th class.

Swami : What are you doing now?

Student : Swami, I have taken Commerce subject.

Swami : What do you want to do in future?

Student : Swami, M.B.A.

Swami : The M.B.A. seat reservation charge is Rs.5,00,000. Apart from that, they have to pay Rs.18,000 per year. I do not know why they charge so much and how the students pay that much?

Teacher : Swami, the bank gives them loans.

Swami : Even if they keep the amount which they are paying for a seat in the bank (as deposit), they can live on the interest!

Prof. A. K. : Swami, today morning there were so many devotees going into the interview room. Who were they?

Swami : They are from Iran.
(To the school student) From when were you studying in Muddenahalli?

Student : Swami, from 8th class.

Swami : Before that where were you studying?

Student : Swami, Bangalore.

Swami collects letters from many boys and goes back into the interview room. After a few minutes, He comes back again…

Swami : The actor Shatrughan Sinha is going to become Minister.
(Editor’s Note: Shatrughan Prasad Sinha is an Indian film actor and politician. He was blessed to act in the film ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’ as one of the characters.)

Prof. A. K. : Yes Swami, he is man of strong words in the party.

Swami : (After a pause) How many new boys? (The boys raise their hands.)
Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram
Swami then called Sri Ravi Mariwala (Sri R. M.), a senior student working in the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram, and told him to speak to the boys. He started the speech by reminding the students of their good fortune of being at the Lotus Feet of the Lord. He also advised that they should not waste this golden opportunity and should make use of every moment they are with Him. Swami asked the speaker to introduce himself first. The speaker introduced himself.

Sri R. M. : Some of us were fortunate enough to be sent by Swami for training to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (A.I.I.M.S.), after our M.B.A.

(He then narrated a few experiences of his, during the stay in the hospital.) The British Broadcasting Corporation (B.B.C.), headed by Dr. Krukoff from U.S.A. had come to our hospital for their documentary named as ‘Mantra’. They were very impressed with the work going on here and were not able to believe that the treatment was totally free. He was most impressed by the Divine atmosphere in and around the hospital. Swami had given the photographer who was part of the team an interview. When we asked him what had happened in the interview room, he replied that his life had changed by just a few minutes of interaction with Him.

Prof. A. K. : How do you rate the instruments in our hospital with the other hospitals?

Sri R. M. : Once, a doctor from abroad had faxed a message to our hospital stating that he would come and work in our hospital if the following list of 24 items were present in the hospital. When one of the doctors received this fax, he sent it to me to check if the instruments were present. When I checked up for the instruments, they were present along with their spare stocks.

Each instrument is worth Rs.5,00,000 - Rs.10,00,000. When some companies come to our hospital with their new products, we show them the product, which is already with us. So, the latest products are already with us.
Once, a team of doctors wanted to set up a hospital free of cost for all the patients and hence came to our hospital to make a study. As they were looking around, they saw a few cupboards and out of curiosity, asked what they contained. When I replied that they were the stock material and that the total cost is around Rs.17,00,000, the doctors were simply astonished.

Prof. A. K. : How do other doctors in other countries know about our hospital?

Sri R. M.. : Most of the doctors know about our hospital through the symposia that we conduct. There is one doctor who was a cardiac surgeon at the Temple University, Philadelphia. He got a big offer from Chicago, which was a very risky job. So he was in a dilemma whether to go for the offer or not. When Swami called him one day for an interview, without he telling Swami about the dilemma, Swami told him that it would be good if he accepted the offer. The doctor replied that he was not sure of his success in that job, as it was very risky. But Swami told him that He was sure of his success. This instilled confidence in him and hence, he accepted the offer. Once, Dr. Frank Barnowski (a psychologist, regression therapist and Kirlian photography expert, who could see and detect aura around people) had come to our Hostel way back in the early 1980s. During his speech to the students in the Hostel-dining hall, he called the then Warden and measured his aura with the instrument he had got with him. The instrument showed that the aura was a couple of feet thick.

He then told the Warden to think of the nature – rivers, mountains, etc. When the Warden contemplated on that for a few seconds, Dr. Frank again measured the aura and this time it was seven feet thick around his body. He now told the Warden to think of Swami. After a few seconds, when
Dr. Frank wanted to measure the aura, he had to go into the quadrangle which was a few meters away, as it had extended till there! Thinking of Swami just for a few seconds was able to create such a big impact, and we get the chance to sit in front of that same Lord every day. So, we should make use of the opportunity to the fullest extent.
Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Bengaluru
Prof. A. K. : What is the doctor-to-patient ratio in our hospital?

Sri R. M. : There is no account of such ratios because we try to send off the patient from the hospital as soon as possible. On the first day, the patient is operated, on the second day he starts eating normal food, on the third and fourth day he is kept in the ward and on the fifth day, he is discharged.

The money spent on each patient sometimes is really enormous. For a few patients, we spend around Rs.10,000 per drug per day, which has to be taken for a few days.

Swami : How many heart lung machines are there?

Sri R. M. : Swami, there are three. There are also different technologies and techniques of operations coming up. And we have the latest technologies and techniques being applied in ours, which is purely due to Swami’s grace only. Each department in our hospital is nearly worth Rs.50,00,000.

Swami : Many people do not know about our hospital. Here the doctors are very good and they do a lot service.

Swami then asked an Institute student to speak, after which, He went back to the interview room.

Sri Sathya Sai visits Sandur Palace – Divine Guidance and Predictions for the Royal Family

Thursday, June 17, 1948

Sri Sathya Sai being welcomed at the Sandur Palace by the Raja and Maharani
Baba visited Sandur [i] on the 17th June. At the behest of Baba, the family deities were brought to the new palace. Baba personally installed the deities in their new abode and sanctified them. The Raja, Yashwant Rao Ghorpade (of the Maratha Ghorpade Dynasty) requested Baba to grace the king’s throne by sitting on it, thereby blessing him and the state.

On the terrace, that night, Baba called the Rani and asked her to bring a towel. Baba’s hand brought forth a burning hot and heavy idol of Krishna. It was so hot that she wondered how Baba had held it with His bare hands. The idol was seven inches tall. Baba installed this idol the next day and sanctified it further by performing puja to it. After a month, annexation procedure of Sandur began. Baba advised the Maharaja to remain calm and gave them encouragement during the transfer of power. He further advised the Maharaja to start a manganese industry although it was commonly frowned upon. In future this industry would become the mainstay of the family and Sandur would become famous for it.
Sri Sathya Sai with the royal family of Sandur
True to Swami’s predictions, today more than six decades later, Sandur is home to several mines and steel plants including:

SMIORE - The Sandur Manganese and Iron Ore company

Donimalai Mine, an iron mine owned by the National Mineral Development Corporation

Subbarayanahalli Mine, an iron ore in Nandi Halli owned by Mysore Minerals Limited

Dharmapur Iron Ore Mines in Ramgad village

Jaisingpur Iron Ore Mine in Yeshwanthanagar

JSW Steels at Toranagallu

VSL Iron Ore Mines in Bhujanganagar village

[i] Sandur State was a princely state of India during the British Raj, part of the Madras States Agency, with Sanduru being its capital. Currently, it is a town in the Bellary District in the Indian state of Karnataka.

Why should we practice Ceiling on Desires?

Sri Sathya Sai Speaks
We should lead this life in a sacred way. We should not pollute nature. Today, people are suffering from dangerous diseases. God gave us the five sacred elements. But today, the air that we breathe is polluted, there is water pollution, noise pollution and the food that we eat is also polluted. In this way all sacred things are rendered unsacred by man. Man can be considered a living creature only when he makes use of nature in a sacred way.

One day, a student, in the interview room, told Swami, “Swami Your eye is a little bit red”. Swami replied, “I don’t waste water like you. People wash their face while keeping the tap open. Until the soap is completely wiped out the water keeps running. But Swami doesn’t do that. He opens the tap when needed and closes it immediately. So while washing His face with the soap, Swami opened his eye to open the tap. At that moment the lather went into Swami’s eye. That is why Swami’s eye is red.” Swami doesn’t waste even a drop of water. Water is Ganga, water is God. For that matter you should not waste anything. You keep the fan ‘on’ even when you are not in the room. But Swami switches the fan off whenever not required. It is not miserliness. Make appropriate use of things whenever required. But do not waste.

Today students should know one more thing. These days students are spending a lot of money. You must understand the suffering your parents undergo to earn this money. They struggle hard and send you the money. It may be easy for the rich, but the lower middle-class families work hard and send you the money. Consider, therefore, every paisa as a drop of blood. Never waste blood and money. Understand that the money that you have is the blood of your parents. Wasting money is tantamount to wasting your parents’ blood. Use it according to your requirements, but don’t waste it.

These days students waste a lot of money. It may not be the case with our students, but students outside spend a lot of money on electing the president of the student union. The union leader would be in that position for only three years. Why then should you spend so much? Students arrange for picnics and spend a lot of money. They arrange for dinner at large hotels. Students! Wastage of money is not good. You should think of your future too. You should look after your parents. You should use money carefully. This is what Swami means by ceiling on desires. Don’t waste time. Time waste is life waste. Don’t waste food. Food is God. Don’t waste money. Misuse of money is evil. Don’t waste energy. Energy is God. Wastage of energy turns into an allergy. Our sight, hearing, speech, smell and work are all God. Wasting these is akin to wasting energy. So don’t waste energy. The less you waste the more closer you are to God.

Students! Don’t waste time. Study in an appropriate way. Some people keep their textbooks open, but inside these books they hide novels. From the outside it looks as if students are reading textbooks, whereas in reality they are reading novels. Students, never be like that. As is the book, so is our head. Books today are written only for earning money. Because we buy such books, people keep writing more. If we don’t buy such nasty books people won’t write them. So never read bad books. Never be in bad company. Don’t wear bad attire. Swami has seen some people in Madras wearing black and red dress. Even animals will get scared seeing them! How nice is the pure white that you wear! How pleasing! Students, always be neatly dressed. Dress, body and the mind should be pure. Develop such purity.

Where There is His Will, There is a Way… - By Vipin Prabhakar

‘Come to Me with Empty Hands, and I shall fill them with Gifts and Grace’

Sri Sathya Sai with Students of Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar, Ooty
Swami always says that unless God Wills, nothing can happen. It was at the age of seven, when after an entrance exam and an interview; I was selected for the 3rd standard in Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar, Ootacamund. My parents had neither seen Swami before nor had even heard of Him. It came as a surprise to my parents that though I had appeared for the entrance exam in Puttaparthi, I was selected for the Ooty School. My father was not very comfortable about admitting me to a school in Ooty. But then, He willed it and both of us left for Ooty. Once we reached the school, there was no looking back. My father was very inspired by the school and above all by the School Principal.

Having joined the Ooty School in the 3rd standard, it was a sweet journey all the way. In the year 1990, it was decided to close down the Ooty School and all of us were transferred to Parthi. After completing my 10th standard, though I was interested in the Science group, I could get selected only for the Commerce group. Again there was a debate in the house as they were not very keen on my pursuing the Commerce line. But He willed it, and I went on to complete my B.Com.(Hons) from Brindavan Campus, and then MBA from Parthi.

Having completed my MBA degree in the year 2002, it was going to be my first step into the competitive world. Competition was fierce and fear of unemployment loomed large, but then I knew He was always there with me.

There was only one question that my relatives, neighbours and anyone whom I knew asked me, “Were there no placements in your Institute, or did you not get placed?” My answer was straight and simple “Swami gave me world class education right from K.G. to P.G.; all without charging even a single penny. Having got the best MBA degree from a great Institute, can I not earn a job myself? It is my conviction that any student from this Institute will get the job of his liking within a period of 6 months after completion of the academic programme, and I am sure that I will not be an exception.”

I came out of the Portals of the Institute in June 2002 and exactly 6 months later, I landed up as a Purchase Officer in Asia’s premier Aerospace Industry –Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. My selection was nothing short of a miracle and was all by His Divine Will.

It is a well-known fact that it is not easy to get a good job in a Public Sector. HAL had posted their advertisement in the month of June in all the leading newspapers and even on the Internet. Like any other candidate, I also put in my application. To my disappointment, I did not find my name in the list of short-listed candidates for the entrance exam. I did not take this to heart, but then, it was disturbing that having secured 91% in MFM (Masters in Financial Management), my name did not appear in the list. I tried to think of all possible reasons for the same.

Just a week before the exam, I received my call card through post. This was nothing short of a miracle! It was the most pleasant surprise of my life and my joy knew no bounds. But my preparations for the exam were nil.

I came to Parthi, took Bhagawan’s Blessings and attempted the exam in Bangalore. Later I discovered that at least a thousand candidates had appeared for the exam. I was pretty confident of being called for an interview. Two months went by but there was no response from HAL. In fact, I even forgot about this job and continued my part time lectureship in a degree college that I had taken up in June.

All of a sudden, in September, I got my call for the interview. This was going to be my first interview and I was competing with more than a hundred candidates for just fifteen posts. I went for the interview fully prepared in all areas of Materials Management and Finance. But to my utter surprise, all the members in the interview panel asked me questions only about Swami. All of them were impressed with my answers. Swami was in Bangalore then, and at the end of the interview, they asked me for the Darshan timings and about the best route to reach Brindavan. The rest is History. I was one of the fifteen candidates to be selected.

This job was very important to me because the company in which my father was working had turned sick and all the employees were offered retirement under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme. Our joy knew no bounds when both my appointment and my father’s retirement came about on the same day in December 2002.

After a year of training in Bangalore, I was posted in my home town –Hyderabad in January 2004. HAL-Hyderabad consists of around 3000 employees. During the first month of my posting, I was on job rotation in all the departments. In each of these departments, work apart, everyone had something or the other to ask about Swami. By the end of the month, I did not know if I had been able to spread Swami’s message adequately, but I knew that many people had bought applications for admitting their children in Parthi. Later during the year, when I came for Swami’s Darshan to Parthi, I met some of my colleagues who had come to have Swami’s Darshan for the first time.

But as every coin has two sides, there were also a handful of people who criticized Swami. Whenever I came across such people, I did not try to convince them that Swami is God because I knew that it would lead to unnecessary arguments. I only used to tell them, “I am not telling you to believe that He is God or to start worshipping Him daily. I am only trying to tell you about the amount of service that He has been doing to humanity. A world class Hospital for the poor, premier Education from K.G. to P.G., Drinking Water for the villages, etc. Tell me one single person or any government which has atleast started working in this direction. If at the minimum, we try to walk in His footsteps, the world would definitely be a better place to live in.”
Slowly, word spread in the company that a Sai Student had joined HAL-Hyderabad. And now it was our Executive Director himself who called me for an informal discussion about Swami. The following week, the Executive Director visited Shivam (Sai Centre in Hyderabad) and also bought some books on Bhagawan Baba.

We were coming to the end of the financial year 2004-05, and our production seemed nowhere close to the targets set. One night, at around 11.00 p.m., when I was asleep, the Executive Director rang me up and he sounded perturbed. He asked me “Cannot Swami do something? Why don’t you pray?” I replied, “Swami always says ‘Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana’ (Do your action and don’t think about the fruits). Of course, I could not convince him with this reply, but then I satisfied him by saying that I would pray. This material target however, was never in my daily prayers. But then to the utter surprise of the entire division and HAL as a whole, all the materials required for production started pouring in from our suppliers and the employees worked on three shifts, and today HAL–Hyd. has exceeded it’s targets by a significant margin! Anything is possible when He wills it!

Conversations with the new MBA Students…

June 18, 2002 (Tuesday)

Sri Sathya Sai in the Sai Kulwant Hall
Swami : Andaru Kurchhanarru. (All are seated). Emi Samacharam? (What news?) (Swami called the student for whom He had materialised a medallion the previous evening.) Did you wear it? (The student tried to tell about a thread for wearing the medallion. Swami materialised a gold chain, attached the medallion to it and put it around the student’s neck. Swami then took a letter from a first year M.B.A. student. The student’s mother had written the letter in the Gujarati script. After reading the four page letter for about two minutes) Where is your father’s brother?

Student : He is in Bombay, Swami.

Swami : Father is having a lot of tension, isn’t it?

Student : Yes, Swami.

Swami : (Taking a letter from another student) M.B.A.? How old are you?

Student : 20, Swami.

Prof. Anil Kumar places a cloth on the floor where water is falling.

Swami : Enta Help Chestunnavo! (How much help are you doing?)

Prof. A. K. : Swami, students might slip when they hand You their letters.

Swami : (Smiling) Neemeede Padtaaru (They will fall on you only).

Prof. A. K. : Swami, I have kept the cloth for my sake only!

Swami : (Taking a letter from a student) From top to toe, you have confusion and depression. Dunnapota. Study well. Don’t think about all these things as long as you are studying. (To the students sitting behind the teachers)
I will not take letters from you since you have to jump over the teachers. (Taking a letter from another student) Is this your letter or your sister’s letter?

Student : It is my letter, Swami.

Swami : What is your name?

Student : Swami, Jyoti.

Swami : Jyoti is sister’s name.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, maybe that is not his full name.

Swami : (To another student) What is your name?

Student : Swami, Sai Krishna Dahal.

Swami : (To another student, Rohit Dawar) Where are your glasses? Nahin Dalta? (Don’t you wear them?)

Prof. A. K. : Swami, he is wearing contact lenses.

Swami : Oh! So that is why you don’t have to wear them. But you should not rub your eyes. (Taking a letter from a student) Exercise every morning and evening. You don’t look good like this. Anand, where did you go yesterday? I know. You think that I see so many boys. So how can I remember? (Warden tries to tell about the research scholar who underwent an operation.) They performed the surgery thrice to remove the stone in the kidney. If the stone is powdered completely, they can remove it. Kadupu Anukunnara Dosakaya Anukunnara? (What do you take it to be, stomach or cucumber?) Be seated, I will return.

Swami went into the interview room and returned with an envelope in His hand.

Swami : I got a cheque. A student sent it to Me by post. They are sending money. (Swami was looking upset) The cheque is for INR 37,500. The student wrote to Me that he got a dream the day before yesterday in which he was instructed to send money to Me. (Swami tears the cheque).

Prof. A. K. : Swami, You tore the cheque! Swami, he was instructed in his dream to send the money.

Swami : Then, let him send the money in the dream. (After sometime). I am giving scholarship to nine boys.

(Editor’s Note: While there are no fees for the education received at the Sri Sathya Sai Educational Institutions, the students have to pay nominal hostel fees. However, for select students who cannot afford this amount as well, Swami would pay their Hostel Mess Fees so that their parents were not burdened.)

(Swami called a student whose name is Jeelani). Your father is working as a Primary School teacher. I am giving you scholarship.

(Swami called another student). What is your father doing?

Student : He is a Collector, Swami.

Swami : What is his salary?

Student : ` 11,000 per month, Swami.

Swami : (To the other student) You are feeling bad that I gave him and did not give you. I will give you also. (Swami created a ring and put it on his finger.) Correct size. Adige Vaariki Icchedi Ledu. Adagani Vaarike Icchedi. (I don’t give to the one who asks. I only give to the one who doesn’t ask).

Prof. A. K. : Swami, as one keeps asking, he goes lower and lower.

Swami : (Taking a letter from another student) Do you play flute?

Student : Yes, Swami. (Swami patted his cheek.)

Swami : (Taking a letter from another student) Tabla?

Student : Yes, Swami.

Swami : How many years?

Student : Swami, I started playing in Brindavan.

Students : (All together) Swami Songs.

Swami : Group songs?

Students : Yes, Swami.

Swami gave the much awaited permission. The students presented a programme of songs and speeches. There were five speeches interspersed with songs, mainly those in Telugu and composed by Swami. When the students sang a Telugu song, Swami made corrections in the song.

The speeches were primarily in English, but interspersed with poems in different languages including Sanskrit, Telugu, Hindi and Gujarati. One of the students from the first year M.B.A. class, Sanjay Mahalingam mentioned about the ‘monkey mind’ in his speech. Swami immediately corrected him saying, “Don’t think like that. It is mankind and not monkey mind.” Another student from the first year M.B.A. class, Shashank Shah, shared his experience as to how he had lost hope about writing the MBA entrance exams for Swami’s Institute as his final year exams for the B.Com. course in Mumbai University overlapped with the entrance exams at Prasanthi Nilayam. So, he wrote a letter to Swami and prayed for His intervention. And miraculously, for the first time in the history of Mumbai University, instead of postponement, the exams were advanced and completed in April itself. As a result, Shashank could write his entrance exams in May and finally was blessed to be in Swami’s presence as His student in the M.B.A. programme.

After the programme, Swami said “Very happy.” He said that the boys had been practicing for the last two days. He profusely blessed them by raising His Abhaya Hasta (Divine Hand). Swami got up and went into the interview room.
