Who belongs to you in this world?

There were once a student and a Guru who stayed in an Ashram nearby. The Guru instructed his student explaining to him every time, “Oh son! In reality there is no father, mother or brother. Be careful. Birth is misery. Life and death are misery. Be careful”. But the student always replied “Swami, these teachings are not for me. My wife and my parents are different. My parents will be waiting at the door step for my arrival. They love me so much. It is meaningless when you say that there is no father, no mother”. The Guru wanted his student to experience the reality. He therefore gave the young student a pill and instructed him to take it as soon as he reached home. The Guru told the student, “As soon as you have this pill you will fall down as if you are dead. Your body will look dead, but you will be conscious. You will be able to hear the conversation that will go around. Everyone will feel that you are dead. Then you will know the truth”. In this modern education system there are so many tests. That is why the students have so much of taste for the tests! The student took the pill and he fell down. His mother came and started crying. In the meanwhile his wife also came and started crying. She started lamenting, “I am the only daughter of my father and if this is my fate what will happen in the future”. She was thinking only of herself even when her husband had died. In the meantime the Guru came over. He asked the student’s father to bring water. The Guru acted as if he was doing some magic and after some time he said, “Anybody who drinks this water will die and the boy will become alive”. He offered the water to the wife of the dead student, but she replied saying that she was the lone daughter of her parents and if she died her parents would not able to bear the loss and would take their own lives. She also said that since her husband was already dead, there was no meaning in dying with him. Then the Guru went to the mother. The mother said, “My first daughter has come home since she is expecting a child. I also have two more daughters yet to get married. If I die, what will happen to them?” Then the Guru took the water to the student’s father. He replied that he was the most elderly person in the house and if he died there would be none to take care of the family. In this way neither the mother, nor the father, nor the wife were ready to give their own lives for the student. Finally all three of them got together and arrived at a master plan. They told, “Guruji, you are so compassionate, why don’t you drink the water and save my son. We will certainly construct a Samadhi for you”. After some time the Guru sprinkled some water on the boy’s face and he got up. He had heard what was going around, and realised the truth that his Guru wanted him to learn.

The whole world is an illusion. No one has got to do anything with anyone. Because of this body attachment you love this body. This is also selfishness. God is the only One who is selfless. Love only God, who is selfless. Whatever good work you do, take it as God’s work. Consider everyone as the form of the Divine. It is the spark of the Divine which is present in each human being. Don’t hate anybody or criticise anybody. Don’t have too much of contact with everyone. Direct all your love to God. Love all, serve all. Have faith in all but believe only in God.

When Sri Sathya Sai saved me from the World Trade Center Attack in 2001… - By Sudhakar Reddy

Being in His Divine Presence is a rare boon bestowed once in several births. Having been granted this boon and knowing what is required of us, let us not waste this chance of a lifetime.

During our stay in the Institute, my focus was only on catching His Physical attention in one way or the other. But in the process, even without my conscious knowledge, I imbibed so many precious qualities that have stood in good stead, during trials and tribulations in my life.

I am pretty sure that none of us would disagree with the fact that we have been guided by the Divine Invisible Hand during every moment of our lives. The sooner we realise this fact, the more will we be at peace with ourselves. Many students of Swami working in organisations are faced with a typical question, “How do you keep smiling all the time and have such a pleasant demeanour amidst all the stress and strain in our profession?” The answer is simple. This immense treasure of equipoise is so much a part of our nature. The highs and lows which our Lord treats us with, prepares us for any kind of uncertainty that life may throw up.

Once, on my way back from Prasanthi Nilayam, I met a young engineer in the bus. He too happened to be working in Bangalore at that time. He introduced himself to me and asked me if I were a student of the Institute. I answered in the affirmative and asked him how he could identify me as a student of Swami. He said that it was quite easy, because almost all Sai Students have a pleasant smile all the time and a kind of ‘glow’ on the face. I was a little embarrassed. He then started to shower praises on his project team leader who was an alumnus of our esteemed Institute. He mentioned about his qualities as a leader and about his being liked by one and all in the team. And guess what; he had come for Swami's Darshan for the first time, only because of the impact that his project leader had on his life.

I felt very proud that day, to notice the impact our brothers have made in their respective organisations, by virtue of their mere presence. I think, this is what is expected of the Sai Students who have been given the privilege of the undivided attention of the Master of the Universe. It is time for us to show our gratitude to our Lord. Swami once said that in the olden days, the disciples’ conduct used to be the yardstick for evaluating the Guru. Do we understand the immense responsibility that rests on our shoulders as students of the Poorna Avatar of Kaliyuga? If one thinks deeply, it would send shivers down the spine!

But the consoling fact is that the mighty Lord has already equipped His instruments with the necessary arsenal of weaponry, to take on this herculean task.

On several occasions, we have heard experiences of Swami’s protective umbrella over His students, wherever they are. On one occasion, I was working on a project based in the World Financial Centre, adjacent to the erstwhile World Trade Centre. I had a meeting with my manager at 8:30 a.m. in the morning. I wanted to be very prompt for the meeting as requested by my boss. I had set the alarm to make sure that I wake up at the right time. But I overslept that night and could not get up in time. I was furious with myself and as it happens most of the time – started chiding the poor Lord. How was I to face my manager in the meeting? I nervously reached at 9:00 a.m., delayed by half an hour. But to my utter surprise and shock, I was warned by the fire-fighters not to venture any further as the World Trade Centre had been struck by terrorist planes at 8:47 a.m. and that it could collapse any moment. I was shell shocked, and after a while, I was in tears thinking of the Lord who made me peacefully rest that night ensuring that I do not rest in eternal peace so soon!!!

The Attack on the World Trade Center, New York - September 11, 2001

Many of our brothers have really gone places in the tough corporate world with their ability to deliver the best. This is primarily due to the preparation they had undergone at the Lotus Feet of our Lord. Like He often says, our life should be His message…. Is it not a miracle that in a world where aggression and craftiness are advocated in Management Schools as a stepping stone to success, the moderate, unassuming and soft spoken, yet able and intelligent graduates from the Sai Institute are going up the corporate ladder, surpassing their peers in various organisations? I, like many of my brothers at the Institute used to wonder why our Institute never encouraged Campus Placements, whereas in the outside world, the ranking of the Management Institutes is measured by the yardstick of the number of organisations coming to its premises for the campus interviews. We used to think that it was due to the laidback attitude of our Institute. Little did we understand then, the underlying principle of our Lord, when He made cryptic remarks like ‘Roses do not advertise their fragrance, and still people run after the roses because of their fragrance.’ Only now, in retrospection, do we understand the meaning of those profound and prophetic statements. Indeed, the Divine fragrance of this esteemed Institute is permeating the corporate world and organisations are running after the roses who pass out from this Institute.

Last but the most important, I would like to mention about our brothers who had the courage to choose the proximity of the Divine over the ludicrous careers awaiting them outside. In my opinion, that kind of clarity of thought and unity of purpose can come with immense control of mind and ability to deal with temptations, which again have been gifted to us by none other than our Divine Master. In this world of immense competition and greed, this kind of selfless sacrifice is nothing short of a miracle. Truly, it has to be seen to be believed. Without Him we are all nothing but zeroes, but with Him we are the true heroes. No wonder, devotees pray to Him to be born again as a student of this unparalleled Institute rather than praying for Moksha (no more births).

He is closer to you than anybody you can think of – your parents, relatives, friends, wife, children etc. Once when my wife had gone to her native place, I was staying alone in my apartment. I had to go to the bank near my office to withdraw some money. As I was getting late, I was in a great hurry. I tried to jump into a bus which I thought had slowed down, but it picked up speed immediately. I slipped and could not put my foot on the footrest. I miraculously escaped being run over by the speeding bus. But I had a broken shoulder, and I was all alone in utter pain. I did not know what to do except thinking of Him. At that moment, an auto driver came near me and offered help!  I was literally in tears. He helped me into his rickshaw and carried me to the nearby hospital. By then I was almost unconscious.

This person called the doctor and waited for all the formalities to be completed. He requested the doctor to attend to me immediately and asked me for any of my friends’ contact number, which I managed to give him. But my friend got delayed in getting the information and reaching me. Again it was Swami’s unique way of letting us know “Why do you fear when I am here?” Finally, that gentleman drove me all the way to my home and ensured that I was safe. Who else could it have been, but our Lord? Though I was at home, I was alone. Nobody was around when I desperately needed them. It was He who took care of me! “Why fear when I am here. I am always with you, around you, inside you, above you…..guiding and guarding you.”

Need to respect women of the household...

Tuesday, March 27, 2001

Swami : Is the entrance test from May 9th to 11th? Call only some people for entrance. (Swami said that by calling too many people, a lot of money went waste on transport charges.) It is very hot inside. (To a student from abroad) Which class?

Student : 9th class Swami.

Swami : Till 12th class, no problem. After that there is visa problem. Every six months, they ask to renew visa. How old are you?

Student : 14.

Swami : How do you know?

Student : Parents told.

Swami : (To Prof. Anil Kumar) What is your age?

Prof. A. K. : 59, Swami.

Swami : Why one less. Round it off to 60! It is very hot inside. (Then Swami narrated the following incident, which was received with much mirth.) When a Swamiji wanted to put on the fan inside his room, one man told him not to do so. When asked why, he replied that his name was written on the fan and it would not be seen when the fan was rotating!

Prof. A. K. : Swami nowadays people write their names on tube lights and also on slabs so that when people sit on them, their names will get sanctified.

Swami : During the 75th Birthday, they wanted to release a stamp with Swami’s photo. I did not agree to it because they put rubber stamp on the stamp, and every day I will be getting so many hits! (Swami asked the school and the institute boys about their performance in the exams. To the reply “O Grade”, Swami expressed dissatisfaction, saying that “O Grade is given for 70% and above, and hence is not a true indicator of one’s performance.” Swami praised few school students for having done very well in the on-going Board exams of 10th and 12th class. Suddenly turned to Sri Bhagia, Faculty Member, School of Business Management) How many marks? You Sir?

Sri Bhagia : Swami in SSC, 75%.

Swami : See even teachers have got 75%, then how can boys get better marks? (To Prof. Sudhir Bhaskar, Faculty Member, School of Business Management at Swami’s University) How much you, Bhaskar?

Prof. Sudhir Bhaskar : Swami 86% in…

Swami : (Jokingly) Since it cannot be verified, you are telling like this. (To the students) I want 90% and above. When I was at school, I used to get remarks like “V. V. V. V. V. Good”. I used finish two hours paper in just half-an-hour. 75 is 7 + 5 = 12 is 1 + 2 = 3 (Individual, Nature and God). 81 implies Maya and God. 8 + 1 = 9 (Brahman). 90 implies Brahman + World is ‘0’. 99 implies ‘All is Brahman everywhere’. 100 implies only One exists, no desires and no ego.

After the interviews, Swami brought with Him an elderly devotee who is an executive of the Sri Nagarjuna Construction Company and made him sit next to His chair. This gentleman had written 108 poems on Potana and wanted to offer them to Swami. Swami accepted the book and gave him permission to recite a few poems in the Divine presence. Swami explained the meaning of the word Potana, breaking it up as ‘Po’ + ‘Tana’. ‘Po’ means ‘Gone’ (body consciousness), ‘Tana’ = ‘Ta= + ‘Na’. ‘Ta’ means Tatvam, ‘Na’ means Jnana. So Potana is one who has lost body conciousness and is established in Tatva Jnan. After the recitation, Swami materialised a fresh fig (Anjeer) and gave half of it to the elderly devotee and breaking the other half and gave it to Prof. G. Venkatraman and Vice-Chancellor, Sri S.V. Giri. Bhagavan commanded them to eat it and asked them how it was? They said that they had never tasted such a fruit ever before. Swami explained that figs are unique in that they do not grow from a bud or a flower. They appear directly as the fruit. When the fruit has ripened fully, the skin, pulp and seed are inseparable and have to be eaten together, and all together their taste is sweet. Swami explained that, in a spiritually ripened person, all the three aspects of Karma, Bhakti and Jnana, coexist as inseparably.

Swami : (To Sri Bhagia) Which subject?

Sri Bhagia : Swami, Leadership.

Swami : Who is a leader and what are the types of leaders? (He explained that a leader should have individual, national and fundamental character.) What are individual character, fundamental character, and national character?

Sri Bhagia : Individual character is with respect to a particular person, his personal needs, etc.

Swami : What is fundamental character?

Sri Bhagia : It is beyond the Self, it is for the society and nation. Any action that is done which is good for all human beings.

Swami : In today’s world there is no individual character, then how will fundamental character be there? In politics, there is nothing. This year many troubles will be there. Even good people will be affected by the actions of bad people if they are in their company. (After a while) A person asked a married woman, “It is your husband who is earning the money, how can you spend the money for your food and other things. You should earn and only then you can spend. How can you have food with the money he earns?” The lady replied, “I am his Ardhangi (wife), I have the right. For the money he gets, he is having his food. For the work I do by preparing the food, I am having it”. (To Prof. Anil Kumar) How much money do you give in your house? Where do you keep the money?

Prof. A. K. : Swami, in house only.

Swami : Ladies are not given much freedom. After all what would they do? They spend the money on children only. But men do not believe them. In olden days, it was different. People used to have big hearts. But now it is not so. Earlier, there was a lot of respect within a family. The wife used to be very humble. She used to serve food first to her husband and then she would have her food. Though she was humble, she was very courageous. But nowadays it is not like this. Immediately after the marriage, when the wife and husband are going in a park, if the husband notices a thorn on the way, he very lovingly tells her to be careful. After a few days more, in a similar situation, he will just tell her to be careful without showing any concern. After some more days, when they are on the same way, when she steps on the thorn, he scolds her saying, “Can’t you see?” (To Prof. Anil Kumar) Do you tell your wife also in the same way?

Prof. A. K. : Swami, I am still in the older tradition, not modern.

Swami : What do you call your wife? Earlier they used to call their wife Aavida, meaning housewife. Nowadays, people call by name. Earlier when the husband came home, he would call out, “Who is there?” Though he knows that his wife was there, he would call this way.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, nowadays not only does the husband call his wife by name, but even wife calls her husband by name. Without proper training by in-laws this is what happens. At least six months training is needed.

Swami : (To Vice-Chancellor, Sri S. V. Giri) Do you call your wife by name?

V. C. : No, Swami.

Swami : (To Prof. Anil Kumar) Do you call by name?

Prof. A. K. : I am half modern. Sometimes I call by name.
Swami : It is not a mistake. Some people call there wife ‘Yemae‘ (casual way of calling a woman). They call as if they are calling a servant!

Prof. A. K. : Nowadays, they cannot do that. They will get thrashed!

Swami : Nowadays, wives are earning ten rupees more than their husbands. Some people call their wife, ‘Ose’ (casual way of calling a woman). They call like this without any respect. (Then Swami narrated the following story.) There lived two friends, one an educated girl, and another an uneducated girl. The educated girl got a medical seat and went off from the village. Later, she got married and settled, and forgot about her childhood friend. After some years, the uneducated girl wrote a letter to her. Her husband read it. It was written, “…We used to play together, eat in the same plate and sleep together…” At the end of the letter it was signed as ‘Lakshmi Narayana’. Thinking this to be a man, the husband asked her who it was. She replied that she did not know. There was a misunderstanding between them. But in the letter it was written that she would come to their place to attend an interview and she would see them. The husband waited for that day. When she got down from a Tonga (cart) in front of their house, the husband asked, “Who are you?” She replied that she was Lakshmi Narayana. He asked her how she got the name? She said that her name was Lakshmi and her father’s name was Narayana. Hence she got the name. In modern days, the husbands treat their wives badly. This is the reason for families getting broken up. I wrote this story in Bukkapatnam.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, You wrote about today’s problems that time itself.

Swami : Nowadays, they don’t keep the father’s name. They keep their husband’s name. In the modern age, they just have their name and husbands call them by name. They will call, ‘Yenna, Yemi‘ (What).

Prof. A. K. : Nowadays, before she calls, the husband himself goes like a slave!

Swami : (To a student) What about you?

Student : I follow only You.

Swami : Shuddha Abadam (completely false). In two years, see what will happen. How many people have told like this to Me!

Prof. A. K. : Swami, there are some people who are still staying.

Swami : (Jokingly) But I have a doubt. (To a Teacher) What does your father call your mother?

Teacher : Vemme.

Swami : Then he is in the old times. What does your mother call?

Teacher : Yemmandi.

3. Attitude towards Work

When you are very absorbed in a task, your mind will be much focused. At such moments you will experience thrill and not anxiety. When you have interest in the work at hand, you will not feel the pressure. You will not even be conscious of what you are doing. You must get totally involved in any work that you do. Then, you will not encounter stumbling blocks like pressure, fatigue and the need to work in haste. Hence, know that you will experience anxiety only when you are not interested in the work. When you have interest in the work that you are doing, you will not even need a break.

Many students take a book from their cupboard with the intention of reading it. But, after a couple of pages, they close it. The reason is that they are not interested in it. At that time, do not force yourself to read. Anytime when you find your interest slackening, do not read further because there is no point in it. Do not take out your books just because the teachers / elders are around. Such studies serve little purpose. In case your interest for studying is not sufficiently aroused at a particular time, relax comfortably for some time. Otherwise sing a nice bhajan song. This will regenerate interest in you.

Right Motivation

This entire world is governed by money. Be it a minor requirement or a major one, money is the limiting factor. How to earn this money? Today, your financial requirements may be met by your parents. But you cannot and should not continue to depend on your parents forever to satisfy your needs. Man has four important principles to comply with during his earthly sojourn. These four principles are: Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. You must earn wealth (Artha) by righteous means (Dharma). Kama means desire. You must have a desire for liberation (Moksha). Hence, you must work in a way that will satisfy your conscience. Only then will you get sufficient wealth to lead life in a happy and successful manner.

You must place certain limits in business also. Buying and selling, profit and loss must all be governed by certain limits. Your impulsiveness is the deciding factor here. Key people concerned with business planning should discuss the issues as a group and take decisions after all-inclusive deliberations. With such concerted unity and purity, any amount of wealth can be earned. For this people engaged in business must develop purity.

What exactly is the meaning of purity? Divine love devoid of any expectations is real purity. There are two prerequisites that lead to purity: ‘Love for God’ and ‘Fear of Sin’. When you develop love for God, fear of sin automatically germinates in you. This will confer unity. When both purity and unity are present, there will be Divinity as a natural consequence.

Sufficient success can be achieved in business if one keeps one’s vision firmly fixed upon the three qualities: unity, purity and Divinity. It may not be proper to crave for profits and success at the initial stages of a business. To satisfy such requirements, you may develop proclivity to corrupt practices such as telling lies, breach of laws and committing frauds. You may even develop relations with corrupt people. As a consequence, one day, you may have to wind up the business. Take care to ensure that under no circumstances does bad company approach you. By adhering to the path of truth, you can achieve anything.

Sri Sathya Sai Visits North India - Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla and Jaipur

Sunday, March 30, 1975 to Tuesday, April 08, 1975

Swami flew to Delhi on 30th March, 1975, on a 10 day visit to North India. During the stop over at Hyderabad, He went to the city to bless a large gathering of devotees. Swami stayed at 16, Golf Links Road, in Delhi.
Sri Sathya Sai coming out of His room at 16, Golf Links at Delhi
The Bal Vikas students presented cultural programmes in the Divine presence at Vigyan Bhavan on 31st March. Swami gave a Discourse on Bharatiya Culture on this occasion. He said:

"It is the bounden duty of every son and daughter of this land of Bharat to implant in the hearts of every child of this land the basic lessons held precious by the founders of Bharatiya Culture. This should be the very first vow to be carried out by every parent, every teacher and every person who dedicates himself to the service of human welfare. For, Bharatiya Culture is the precious heritage of the whole world, and of every human community therein. The lesson that the Atma (Divine Principle), resident In everyone is the real core of the Universe and that It is the supreme sovereign of the Cosmos will certainly bring together all mankind and ensure Peace and Harmony among the nations. Of what avail is life when the Truth is not known? Why deprive children of this great treasure and look on, when they lead dry fallow lives? Every person has to try to know his own Truth and lead his child into that awareness. What is happening today is quite the opposite! Parents, teachers and leaders are inflaming the passions of young minds and encouraging them to Indulge in violent deeds. The very people who preach the message of Peace, who talk of the basic principle of child education, who harp on love, harmony and mutual love, and who elaborate on the principles of social progress and national uplift are themselves undermining these hopes by their example.

Bharatiya Culture emphasising humility, sincerity and unity is the best cure for such emotional errors. More than the pursuit of luxurious life or competitive comfort, the acquisition of wealth or power, which are all liable to quick decline, the ideal of simple living and high thinking laid down by the sages of India will lead to happy lives and greater social peace. You must have experienced the thrill of witnessing the plays enacted now by the children of the Sathya Sai Bala Vikas children. The plays were inspiring and instructive; the acting was appealing and attractive; the meaning, has gone deep into the hearts of the children, as well as the elders who witnessed the plays. But, let me tell you, this is not enough. Along with the Bala Vikas, the elders too must experience Vikas (flowering or development), and lead exemplary lives Of simplicity and sincerity, of spiritual discipline and steady discipline. Children are wayward and vile, today, since they have no other examples to follow. Learn the lessons of duty, devotion and discipline from the lips of these children; let each child be a ray of sunshine in the home, shedding light and love. Let the child's desire to serve other children and the defectives around be an inspiration to you. Children do not say one thing and do the opposite. They are very straight forward and innocent. Imbibe this nature now from them, for elders have strayed far from that ideal. The signs are favourable. The fame of this country will not diminish; it will only grow, with the coming days; very soon, India will be free from fear, and will soon regain her old position as the preceptor for mankind."
Sri Sathya Sai arriving at Talkatora Gardens; To His right is Sri Sohanlal, Member of Parliament and host
Swami addressed a gathering of devotees at Talkatora Gardens on April 1st and 2nd. Highlighting the essential unity of all mankind, Swami told the thousands gathered at the Talkatora Gardens:

"Everyone should respect all others as one's own kin, having the same Divine spark, and the same Divine Nature. Then, there will be effective production, economic consumption and equitable distribution, resulting in peace and promotion of love. Now, love based on the Innate Divinity is absent and so, there is exploitation, deceit, greed and cruelty. If man becomes aware of all men being 'cells' !n the Divine body, then, there will be no more 'devaluation' of man. Man is a diamond; but, he is now treated by other men and by himself as a piece of glass!

Man can realise his mission on the earth only when he knows himself as Divine and when he reveres all others as Divine. And, man has to worship God in the form of Man. God appears before him as blind beggar, an idiot, a leper, a child, a decrepit old man, a criminal or a madman. You must see even behind those veils, the divine embodiment of love, power and wisdom, the Sai, and worship Him through Seva (selfless service). God cannot be identified with one Name and one Form. He is all Names and all Forms. All Names are His; all forms are His. Your Names too are His, you are His Forms. You appear as separate individual bodies because the eye that sees them seeks only bodies, the outer encasement. When you clarify and sanctify your vision and look at them through the Atmic eye, the eye that penetrates behind the physical (with all its attributes and appurtenances), then, you will see others as waves on the ocean of the Absolute, as the "thousand heads, the thousand eyes, thousand feet" of the Virat Purusha (Supreme Sovereign Person) sung in the Rig Veda. Strive to win that Vision and to saturate yourself with that Bliss."
Sri Sathya Sai Darshan at Chandigarh
Bhajan and Darshan continued at 9 am and 5 pm at the same venue during Swami’s stay. He flew by a chartered plane to Amritsar with a few devotees on 3rd April. He addressed a mammoth gathering at Amritsar and proceeded to Chandigarh to bless the devotees. From Chandigarh He travelled by car to Shimla and addressed a mammoth gathering there.

Sri Sathya Sai in Shimla - 1975
He said:

"People of Himachal Pradesh! Lord Shiva resides on the Himalayas, as the Puranas (mythological legends) declare. The inner meaning of this declaration is - Lord Shiva lives in hearts that are as pure, as white and as cool as the snow (Hima) and also as steady and unmoved (Achal) as these mountains. Your surroundings, therefore, are teaching you a lesson whenever you turn towards them. They exhort you to be pure, unblemished, comforting to the distressed and unmoved by either luck or misfortune. You must have won nativity in this region, as a result of the merit earned in many previous lives. Man has to become aware of his genuine nature and be established in that. Or else, he ceases to be entitled to that name. When fire does not burn or when water does not flow, can they lay claim to those names? Genuineness consists in being true to the deepest core.

Man has Truth as his nature. That is to say, you can rely on man's behaviour being always true; he will speak out only what he feels to be sincere; he will act according to his words; his thought, word and action will be consistent and complementary. If in any one case, this concordance is absent, then, the person is a man only in outer form. He is worse than a beast, for, beasts are free from the burdens of thought and speech.
The mammoth crowd at Ridge Maidan in Shimla for Sathya Sai Darshan
All things in Creation are subject to the law of change and man too is subject to his law. But, man should use the law for progress, and not for sliding lower in the scale. Dharma (righteousness) is the norm, which he must adhere to, so that he changes from good to better and from better to the best. Dharma Is that which is 'worn;' man must wear the apparel of Dharma so that he is saved from the cold winds of ego. Man has been endowed with Buddhi (Intellect), so that he might at every turn decide what is beneficent for observance and what is detrimental. Gandhi while going through hate-ridden regions, prayed, "Sabko Sanmati De Bhagavan!" (O Lord! Give everyone good mind!). The Intellect has to be kept sharp, clear and straight.

There are four directions in which the intellect guides man:
1. Swartha-Sukha-Buddhi: This indicates the fully egoistic nature, where the Individual does not care for even his wife and children, but, is eager to fulfill his own needs first and foremost.
2. Swartha-Paraartha-Sukha-Buddhi: this allows some consideration for the happiness of others also. Birds feed their young and undergo great exertion to bring them up.
3. Parartha-Buddhi: Those who have this, seek for others as much happiness as they seek for themselves. They are prepared to undergo any trouble to secure for others too what they feel will grant them happiness.
4. Adhyatmic-Buddhi: This leads man ever on the path of renunciation and service, for, they alone lead to Spiritual advancement.
Sri Sathya Sai interacting with devotees at Ridge Maidan at Shimla
India was for long centuries the guide and Guru (preceptor) of mankind, because people cultivated this type of spiritual intelligence. Today it .has yielded place to falsehood, hypocrisy, injustice, and greed. The Adhyatmic intellect recognises the Unity of creation and so, what the other person feels is felt by the individual too, to the same degree. This vast gathering of people will appear to the Adhyatmic Intellect as a garland of multi-coloured flowers strung on the one single thread, God. Develop this vision; see the One behind the many; see the Brahma Sutra, the string that runs through each flower. When you win the Love of God, His compassion will flow unto you. Love gives and forgives. Ego gets and forgets. When your son steals some money from the house, you do not hand him over to the police; but, when your servant steals a spoon, you have no such qualms. For, you have no love for the servant.

Live without hating others, condemning others, and seeking faults in others. Vyasa, who wrote eighteen voluminous Puranas summarised all the Puranas in one single line of a small couplet: "Doing good to others is the only meritorious act; doing evil is the most heinous sin." When you feel you cannot do good, at least desist from doing evil. That itself is meritorious service! Do not try to discover differences; discover unity. Creeds, castes, country of origin may differ but the inner hunger is the same for all men. Understand that the purpose of life is to know the Embodiment of love, namely, God, through love, and demonstrate through your own Love that you have known Him.
Sri Sathya Sai with devotees at the Himachal Bhavan in Shimla
The limbs of the body have to work In unison for the common purpose of sustaining the body and keeping it fit for its prime mission. If one limb quarrels with another or refuses to cooperate or help, the entire body, Including the refractory limb, will suffer. When you see a thorn on the road the feet move away; the eyes saw and immediately, sympathetic vibrations warned the feet. The love and cooperation between eye and feet come from the Atma within and the love which is its very nature, dust as your body is kept safe and secure by love, may the country also be kept safe and secure; for, It has a great mission to fulfill, as the guide and goal of mankind."

Back in Delhi on 4th April, He addressed a large gathering. Along with a few devotees He then flew to Jaipur on the 5th April. He visited the Sri Sathya Sai College at Jaipur and addressed the students of the College.
Sathya Sai College for Women, Jaipur
Highlighting His expectations of the women students, He said:

"The young girls who study in this College today will become mothers tomorrow. It is therefore necessary that they should equip themselves with all the culture, learning and wisdom that they need in their future lives. In India, we assign a special place to women. It is therefore all the more important that the girls who are studying here should train themselves in such a way that they can live up to the Ideals and aspirations of an Indian woman.

We consider women as Grihalakshmi, Dharmapatni, and so on. A woman has to maintain her house. She is not only the house wife, but on her depends the glory or otherwise of the whole country. That is why we say this is our motherland. It is in this spirit that we refer to our country as Bharat Mata (Motherland). We also find that women are given the first position when they are associated with their counterparts as Seeta-Rama, Lakshmi-Narayana, Radha Krishna and Parvati-Parameshwara. It is only to establish this prominence given to women in our country and to train our young girls on these lines that we took up the task of opening such colleges.

I expect the young girls studying in this college to cultivate such good qualities which will bring name and fame to the native homes and also to those where they proceed after marriage. The bad habits and vulgar behaviour that we find in most of the young girls today should not find a place in the girls of this College. The girls of a Sathya Sai College should maintain the ideals of the institutions and keep the prestige of their homes, their society and their culture. It is only then that the purpose of establishing this college can be served."

Swami gave a Discourse at Vigyan Bhavan on 8th April. Ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of the Embassys of various countries, Administrators and Scholars were present on this occasion. The Vice President of India, Sri B. D. Jatti, presided over the function. Swami left Delhi on 8th and halted at Hyderabad for sometime. He reached Brindavan on Ugadi, the 12th of April, and blessed the devotees on the New Year. He reached Prashanti Nilayam in time to bless the devotees the same day.

(MEANING)
One should be blessed by Sai's compassion however great he might be.
Be it an Asura (demon) or a Bhusura (emperor) or a scholar
He should be blessed by Sai's compassion.
One might be learned and argue well, one may compose many poems,
One might stay in caves and sit and meditate,
But he should be blessed by Sai's compassion.
One might practice Yoga or have gone through sacred texts like the Bhagavatam,
One might grow long beard and wear an auspicious mark on the forehead,
But he should be blessed by Sai's compassion.
One might perform severe Japa (chanting the name of God) and pray hard and may even cry doing so,
But he should be blessed by Sai's compassion.
One might put on saffron clothes (symbolising renunciation) or might wear a garland around one’s neck, and roll the rosary fast (symbolising continuous chanting of God’s name), but ultimately everyone has to come to You Swami.
He should be blessed by Sai’s compassion.
One might worship You with devotion or might come to Puttaparthi itself,
One might perform rituals well or might go round the entire globe,
But he should be blesed by Sai’s compassion.... Your compassion...
Swami's compassion.

"Offer Yourself to God at a Young Age"

This body is like a tender plantain leaf. It consists of four elements which are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha (righteous conduct, righteous wealth, righteous desires and liberation). The body is also made of the five delicacies of the five senses. To whom do we offer these delicacies? These have to be offered to God. At this young age, we have to offer this tender plantain leaf of the body to God. But instead of offering it to God, we offer it to the six demons of Kama, Krodha, Moha, Lobha, Mada and Matsarya (lust, anger, attachment, greed, pride and jealousy). After offering the food (our body) to these six demons (the six vices), we are offering only the residual part of the food (the body) to God. When do we do this? When we become very old? By then the plantain leaf has become dried, it is no longer tender and the demons have torn it into pieces. The bad qualities ruin the strength of the body. The thinking power, talking power, hearing power, seeing power – all of these are destroyed by the bad qualities. How can you make such a defiled offering to God? Hence, in this young age, you must offer the five delicacies (senses) on the tender plantain leaf (body) to God. We must not misuse the sound (Shabda) which emerges from us. The touch (Sparsha) is also a part of the food. Form (Roopa), Taste (Ruchi) and Smell (Gandha) are also a part of the food (body). All of these should be appropriately offered and then consumed. When you consume food, what happens? You take in the food; it gets digested and is supplied to all parts of the body. Only then is the body nourished and sustained. We must not misuse and waste the five senses.

Take another example. Body is a radio. We get news from many stations. We have to tune the radio to whichever station we want to listen to. When you tune the radio correctly, you get the correct news. If you don’t tune it properly, you get disturbing sounds which is sometimes like a nuisance. So at this stage you should recognise the truth and tune yourself to God. How do we use our mind? How do we enjoy our works? How do we use our eyesight? True education is to think of all of these and get appropriate answers.

When you have bad looks (see wrong things) a lot of energy is wasted. When you think of bad thoughts, lot of energy is wasted. When you indulge in bad talk, a lot of energy gets wasted. Like this, you are losing a lot of strength to these five senses. Real Sadhana is to utilise these five senses properly. You may not do Japa (chanting the name of the Lord), Dhyana (meditation) or Yoga. Have control over your eyesight. Then you will be powerful. Then your energy will not be wasted. Your life will be enjoyable, healthy and happy. Use your senses well. In case you see something bad, tell yourself, “This is not required for me. Why should I see that?” Change your sight. If you do something wrong, you should tell yourself, “I should not do this. I am not an animal. I am a human being.” The six vices are animal qualities. The five values are human qualities. When you have a desire to do wrong things, tell yourself, “I am not an animal, I am a human being.” If you repeatedly remind yourself of this, you would eventually become Divine.

You are not a tiger to frighten or a cow to get frightened. Why do you get frightened? You think about your future. But why do you think about that future which is not your own property? What is the use of thinking about the future? It is beyond your own reach. In the same way past is past, forget about the past. Present is very important. You are living in this present. When you enter an examination hall if you think about your past and future your present will get spoilt. Past is past. Past is like the dried tree, future is like the grown up tree and present is like the seed. Hence the seed is important but not the tree. You should always think about the present because it is helpful for us in sowing our seed for our future. Today’s students think about their future and spoil their present. Future is not going to stay. It is not in your hands.  Don’t think about your future. Enjoy your present. Then only will your future be happy. Keep only the present in mind. Then only will your future prosper.

When you are studying, you study hard and concentrate on studies. At a young age if you keep on thinking about your marriage, you can’t study well. Today’s boys, while studying, think about the job they will get, the type of wife they will have and the dowry they will get during marriage. So if you think like this then when will you study and when will you get the job? Life is very important.

There was a young boy going to attend his examination and while going on the road there was an astrologer sitting on the roadside. The boy asked the astrologer whether he will pass in the examination or not. The astrologer saw his palm and told that his education is very good, and he will get a very nice job and his earnings will be more. But the astrologer also told him that his life span was very short. The boy got depressed pondering over the futility of knowledge and wealth when the life span is short. Life is very important and you should think how to increase your life span. How can you increase your life span? You can increase your life span by performing good deeds.
Lord Rama - The Ideal for all Humanity
Today’s parents want their children to earn great education, job and salary. Every time parents want great things. You can earn greatness only if you do things in a good way. Rama and Ravana both knew 32 types of Shastras. But Ravana was considered a great person. Rama was not a great person but a good person. There is great difference between goodness and greatness. What is this greatness? To see man even in God is greatness. Ravana saw man in Rama. But what did Rama see? He saw God even in man. He saw God in everyone. If you see God in every man then only will you be known as a good person. Do good, lead a good life. Only then will you prosper in your life. All this that you have is given by your parents; therefore you need to respect your parents. That is why scriptures proclaim – Mother is God, Father is God.
