How My Parents Became Sai Devotees? – By P. Shivakumar

Whatever we may feel, think or do, Bhagavan is the guiding light present in the depths of our hearts. His selfless Love is the ultimate source to wash away our sins. He is the Mastermind always at rest and always at work, taking care of even the minute functions of the Universe. His Love is as vast as the sky and He silently bears the sufferings and pains taking care that nobody should know. All this... and yet when we arrive for His Darshan He gently and lovingly walks giving a beautiful smile like an innocent child as if He knows nothing. Indeed He is the greatest Actor. We are like the cubs of a lioness whose mother takes great pride in seeing her children grow and someday become great kings of the jungle. We must bloom in His Garden of Love.
Our Bhagavan is always giving and forgiving. He has His own endearing ways of approaching every person. In this Kali Age, there is so much of violence and unrest. Therefore Bhagavan performs His greatest Miracle - the miracle of Transformation. He sees the appropriate time and then brings a change in a person through His Infinite Love. But first, we must develop faith. It is like the foundation. If it is not strong enough, the entire structure will come down and swerve from the Divine Path. We must develop faith, not by seeing others but by following our own conscience. Love is like a telephone line connecting God and us. We must speak to God directly and not through others.

Once a man was standing in the middle of the road and was looking up at the sky. He kept on repeating, “Oh God,” with tearful eyes. Another person saw this man and he too looked up with curiosity. Then a third man, and a fourth man followed and soon there was a big line of men looking up at the sky. Perhaps they thought that the Lord was going to give him Darshan and they imagined the clouds slowly changing in the Form of Lord Shiva. When the last man approached then, he asked the previous person why he was looking up and what the curiosity was all about. He simply shrugged his shoulders and said that he did not know the reason. The question was passed on to each person and finally it reached the first man himself. When he was asked as to why he was looking up and whether he could see the Lord, he replied with eyes full of tears, “I have a terrible neck sprain.” The men, hearing this, were surprised and moved on with disappointment. The big queue soon disappeared. We must not have faith based on other people’s faith. It would only lead to disappointments. If that person loses faith, we also lose faith. We must experience God ourselves. For this God’s grace is essential. So the very fact that we believe in Bhagavan is because of His Grace. If there is an atheist, it simply means that his time to believe in God has not yet come. If you are made to believe in God by your relatives or parents, it is not because of them but because of God’s Grace only.

I would like to narrate an incident to show how transformation took place within our family. My parents in the beginning were not devotees of Bhagavan and my father apparently thought that Bhagavan was a fake. No matter, how much he saw or heard about Bhagavan, he refused to believe in Him. It seemed as though now our time had come. I had a sister who was six years older than I. She was physically handicapped. She couldn’t talk, move or do anything. My mother took care of her, feeling that she was a Divine child. One morning my father had to catch a bus and go to some other place. My mother was feeding my sister. For some reason, that morning, my sister was swallowing her food very fast and it surprised my mother because she usually gives trouble while eating. My father luckily missed the bus and came back. My sister looked at both parents and breathed her last. The ambulance was immediately called but it was of no use. When both of my parents came out of the hospital feeling sad, an old lady walked up to them and started smiling. My father got irritated and asked her the reason. She said that they were very lucky. This startled my parents. She explained that God had a separate list of parents to take care of such children and they were on the list. So they were fortunate. On hearing this, my parents felt a little better. At that time I was only three years old and did not understand what was happening. My mother could not bear this fact. She cried everyday thinking of her. Nobody could console her. In about one and a half years we were transferred to Korea and my mother felt all the more sad as it was very lonely and they did not know anybody there. She continued weeping, constantly thinking of my sister. My parents were told that there were Sai Bhajans conducted in somebody’s house. So they went there for a change to divert their minds. One night, Bhagavan came in my mother’s dream and showed my sister on His lap wearing the same dress, which my mother put on her on the day she had passed away. My sister was smiling and was completely normal and was saying that she was very happy. Bhagavan pointed to my sister and said, “See, she is very happy with Me. If you are feeling so sad and if you want her back, I will send her back to you.”
My mother refused, saying that since she was happy with Bhagavan, it was not necessary. From that day onward, my mother never shed a tear. Bhagavan, in His Infinite Love, had removed the suffering of my mother whom nobody could console even though my parents did not know or believe in Bhagavan.

In this way, my parents became His devotees and I landed up as a student of Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School for my own good. Faith is the most essential requirement for spiritual progress. Therefore we must develop that faith. Bhagavan has said many times, “Where there is faith there is love, where there is love there is God.” At times, God may put us to certain sufferings to test whether our faith is strong. When a small child is learning how to walk; it catches the mother’s hand but the mother suddenly leaves the child’s hand trying to make him walk on his own. The child may at times fall down and get hurt but the mother always encourages it to advance. Similarly, Bhagavan holds our hands as we climb the steps of spirituality. At times, He may put us to sufferings and test us in His own ways. He does it in order to teach certain lessons to us so that we may develop further.

We should never give scope for doubts for how can a loving mother leave her child all alone? The Divine Mother never leaves us but only encourages us. She feels pleased when perform some good deeds. For Her level, everything should be perfect. Whatever we do may not be even a fraction of Her perfection but still She shows immense joy in whatever small good we do and encourages us. Hence it is rightly said, “God is the easiest person to please.” This is His uniqueness.

His love and compassion for us is beyond comprehension. But He stretches it out only for one thing. And that is selfless love, which actually belongs to Him. At times we may feel that Bhagavan does not answer our prayers or He does not fulfil our wishes. When a small child asks His mother to buy an expensive toy, she sometimes refuses. But the child cannot get angry with His mother just for this simple reason. The mother gives what it really needs. Similarly God knows what is good for us. He knows what we really need. He already does many things for us whether we pray for them or not. He is continuously giving what we really need: that is His selfless Love. So we must never get agitated when we are put to sufferings. Our faith should only become stronger. The Golden Age is fast approaching us. Let us strength our faith and become worthy instruments in His Mission.

What is True Freedom? How should we Earn Money?

Why there is so much emphasis on this? The reason for this is that among the student community, there is limited sense control. They don’t understand what balance of mind is. They feel that their goal is to move around freely. They should understand what freedom is. They believe that freedom is moving around as one feels like, living as per one’s whims and fancies, and behaving as per one’s wishes. Even birds and animals enjoy such freedom. There is no rule whatsoever for the dogs and monkeys pertaining to their activities. They wander as they feel like. What is then so special about the life of a human being? One who is a human being, who is educated, one who is a student should understand this aspect very clearly. What is the meaning of ‘Swechha’ (freedom)? ‘Swa’ + ‘Ichha’ = Swechha. ‘Swa’ means Atma. Living with thoughts pertaining to the Atma is Swechha. Following the body is not Swechha. One has to exercise control over the body, observe the thoughts entertained by the mind and follow that which is to the satisfaction of the Atma after discriminating if it is good or bad and right or wrong. That is true freedom. That is self confidence. Thus confidence should be developed in the activity one undertakes. Only when there is faith can one understand the meaning of ‘Swa’ (Atma). Conscience pertains to Atma.

A Devotee should have Faith and Purity

Students! Essentially try to cultivate noble qualities than mere study. Don’t get excited and become emotional in petty worldly matters. To understand the Divine principle, devotion is very essential. When there is such ardent faith in God, we develop strength necessary to withstand praise and abuse, gain and loss, victory and defeat. ‘Satyam Vada, Dharmam Chara’, the principles of speaking the truth and being righteous were followed by the people of yore. Truth has to be spoken and not something to be enacted. Righteousness is that which has to be practiced and not spoken. Dharmaraja (Yudhishtira) stood as a role model in speaking truth and practicing righteousness. He also had a third belief. That was, ‘It is not that God speaks truth. It is that whatever God speaks is truth.’ Whatever God speaks is Truth. There is a lot of difference between the two statements – ‘God speaks truth’ and ‘Whatever God speaks is truth’. Hence he obeyed Lord Krishna in the battle field when the Lord commanded him to utter the words “Ashwatthama Hatah Kunjaraha”. He obeyed God’s command in letter and spirit without a second thought. That was his faith. How else could an ardent devotee like Dharmaraja sustain his power? To his right was Bheema and to his left was Arjuna and he stood at the centre. Indians should understand the significance of this very clearly. Bheema who is to the right of Dharmaraja is not a symbol of physical strength but he is upright in practicing the right conduct and moral principles. He obeyed the words of his brother Dharmaraja but never misused his physical strength anywhere. Arjuna standing to the left of Dharmaraja is personification of purity. Arjuna means purity. Not only purity, he also possessed various powers and capabilities. Hence he received various honours from Indra and Upendra. Unlike the present day Indians receiving honours like Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan, he received titles such as Arjuna, Phalguna, Partha, Kiriti, Shwetavahana, Savyasachi, Vijaya Krishna, Dhananjaya, etc. Such a personality of high honour and dignity has been eternally pure. Because of morality being on one side and purity on the other, Dharma prevailed in those days of Dharmaraja.
Every devotee should develop ardent faith and belief in God. On the other hand, he should develop purity and be unsullied. Only because of these two, Dharmaraja became a personality of universal repute. Had Dharmaraja been alone, he would not have gained such fame and name. Bheema and Arjuna guarded the honour and repute of Dharmaraja. Devotees also should have the guard of ardent faith and purity. If faith is not sturdy and there is no purity, they get confused and become like ‘Doubting Thomas’. In such a life full of doubts, what result can devotion give you? You have doubts at every step of your life. Such a man cannot achieve anything in the world. Not only unsullied faith, one should also have the physical strength and intellectual sharpness. That is ardent faith. This comes if you have love for God even for a single second.

During his life sojourn on earth, man spends so much time thinking about his family, friends, money and business transactions. He devotes all his time for the sake of money, food, pleasures, name and fame. If only he could devote even a fraction of the time he spends in pursuit of mundane matters in the contemplation of the Lotus Feet of Nanda Nandana (Krishna), He can avoid going to the abode of Lord Yama (the Lord of Death).

You spend a lot of time on useless, momentary, temporary and worldly activities. Are you spending even a second of it for God? It is sufficient even if you concentrate for a second on the Lotus Feet of the Lord Krishna. If someone is given a Shiva Lingam, they have difficulty in performing Abhishekam for it. But they have time to clean the buffaloes with utmost care and interest! They don’t have time only to perform Abhishekam for the Shiva Lingam with just a spoon of water. Not that they don’t have time and the process is tedious. They lack interest. They are more interested in worldly activities. You lack interest in something that is pure. Only because of lack of purity, you are losing the power of discrimination. “Shraddhavaan Labhate Jnanam” – only out of faith can one acquire wisdom. Hence we have to develop interest for spiritual talks.

Be Grateful for the Help You Have Received

Students! Only when you blend your education with spirituality, you can reach the goal of your life. Worldly education alone cannot confer peace and happiness to human beings. Spirituality alone can give eternal peace and happiness to mankind. Spirituality is selfless. We have been experiencing the Hindu Dharma which expounded the statement “Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu”.  Vedas gave this profound unity of mankind through various sacred hymns. Everyone should be united. “We shall grow together, walk together and learn together”, has been the prime message of the Vedas. But today such unity has been confined to saying, ‘Hello, Hello’. We thus limit our relationship with others to mere words. Hence to promote unity, gratefulness has been set as an important goal in spirituality. You have to remain grateful to the person from whom you received even the slightest help. This is the first duty that students should learn.

Earn Righteously, Spend Righteously

It is not sufficient if you just study, receive degrees, join good companies and earn high salaries. Your ancestors also have earned a lot of money. But they used it through judicious and righteous means. They built shelters for passersby, dug wells, and established educational institutions and health centers. They spent their money in such righteous ways. But today as wealth is being amassed; people are building multi-storeyed buildings, buying cars for selfish purposes, spending time in clubs, playing cards, and thus wasting money. “Yatha Raja, Tatha Praja” – as is the king, so are the subjects. Money acquired through unfair means is being spent off in similar unfair activities. Your ancestors spent the money in righteous ways as it was their hard earned money.

Students! Earn money. There is nothing wrong in it. But spend it in righteous ways. Else, that very money will cause a lot of tribulations in your family. Today worshippers of wealth are increasing. Devotees of Hari are nowhere to be seen. Worshippers of Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) are seen everywhere and not worshippers of Sriman Narayana (the Lord of Lakshmi). This is the devotion prevalent today. Wealth comes today and goes tomorrow. If you look at a ₹100 note, it laughs back at you saying, “Oh mad man! I have seen a lot of faces like that of yours before coming to you. I will be going to someone else tomorrow!” All this money is not ours.

The Divine Master – By B. Abhinay

Swami, the Divine Master is the toughest person to understand. In fact, He Himself has said many times, “It is not possible for you to understand Me, just accept Me”. Truly indeed, mysterious are His ways.

When I was a 10-year-old boy, I was very naughty. Those were the days when Swami used to give Darshan at 6:30 am. I used to wake up early and then hurry for Darshan only to be seated in the last lines of devotees. Being small, once, I just hopped into the second line of devotees. When Swami came, He lovingly stretched out His hand to take a letter from a devotee near me. With the mixed feelings of Love and fear, I got up and stuttered, “S-S-Swami!” With love and compassion, He raised His eyebrows and this gesture, I thought, meant, “What my child?” Though joining His institution was in my mind, out of fear, I only stretched my hands, asking for Vibhuti. He only stared at me, as He knew that I wanted something bigger and so just continued collecting the letters and went away.

I was filled with joy as that was the first time I had interacted with the Avatar. At the same time, I felt unhappy, as I did not make good use of the great opportunity that I had in front of me. But how can the Divine master disappoint His child? So, He came, that night, in my dream and conducted the entrance exam and interviewed me. He then told me to get all the things required and there my dream ended.

I got up feeling very blessed and then went to the Primary School for admission after Darshan. The headmistress of the school did not agree. As soon as she saw me she only said, “No admissions now”. Feeling a bit dejected I went back home and prayed intensely. This went on for a week and then I gave up. A year passed by. Once again I went to request the headmistress for admission. This time I was made to write the entrance exam. I finished the exam quickly and so the invigilator asked me if I was studying in a higher class. I replied in the negative. Nevertheless, she asked me if I knew Bhajans, Vedam, etc. When I replied in the affirmative, I was asked to sing a Bhajan, which I immediately did. She then told me to come again on the next day.

With a great hope, I went there on the next day. The headmistress recognized me, gave me a form and said I was selected and should join the hostel after a week. With gratitude in my heart I prayed to Swami, thanking Him for fulfilling my wish. After getting all the requirements, I joined the hostel and from that day, every day has been a cherishable one with the physical proximity of Sai and the love He showers on His children.
Sri Sathya Sai distributing Chocolates
When I was in class IX, I took a tray containing dry fruits and chocolates to be blessed on my birthday. Swami slowly glided into the Kulwant Hall, giving His Darshan to thousands of devotees who had come from all over the world. As Swami came near me, I felt very excited. A few more boys had trays with them. Swami began blessing all of them.

When it was my turn, I raised my tray and looked into His eyes. He looked into my eyes and blessed all the things on my tray. I continued looking into His eyes and He into mine. Suddenly, He began to wave His hand. He stopped waving and lo and behold! There was Vibhuti in His hand. He stretched His hand onto my tray. Thinking that Swami was going to sprinkle it on my tray, I only looked at the hand. Seeing this Swami lovingly told me, “Take.” Hearing this I stretched out my hands along with other boys to receive the Prasadam from His hand.

Swami gave a part of the Vibhuti to me and the rest He distributed among the other outstretched hands. I only looked into His eyes and expressed my gratitude through my eyes. All the boys who were present there thanked me and called me, ”lucky”. They said it was only because of me that they too were blessed. But I only closed my eyes and thanked Him profusely. The heart to heart connection had been established. I put the Vibhuti on a paper, sent it home, and told my parents to preserve it.

When I had my first interaction with Swami, I had stretched out my hand asking for Vibhuti. This time Swami fulfilled that small desire. This is an example that shows that His delays are not His denials. How can the loving mother make Her child feel unhappy? Swami has His own unique ways of answering His children’s prayers, whether they are small or big. But the most important thing is to pray sincerely.

Sri Sathya Sai's Last Address in Mumbai

Friday, June 01, 2001
Sri Sathya Sai at Dharmakshetra

Bhagavan made a short visit to Mumbai on 1st June 2001. He visited the residence of a senior ailing devotee, and then proceeded to Dharmakshetra. Bhagavan blessed the Bal Vikas students at Dharmakshetra in Shanti Deep Hall at 12.30 pm. He blessed the assembled devotees with His Darshan. Sri V. Srinivasan, All India President of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, gave a short speech. Bhagavan then delivered His Discourse which was translated into English by Sri Srinivasan. He said:

“The All India President of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, Srinivasan, spoke about the Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of man. But he did not speak about motherhood of the mother. In this creation all are born to a mother, however great they may be or whatever they might have achieved. The mother’s womb is like Bhu Mata (Mother Earth). The quality of the fruit will be the same as the quality of the seed sown in the earth.

Revere The Mother As God

In today’s world, people lack purity and sacrifice. What is the reason? It is the lack of purity of the mother’s womb. If the mother’s womb is pure, the children born to her will also be pure. If there is peace in the mother’s heart, the whole world will be peaceful. So, first and foremost, we need women of purity in this world. It is because of such pure women that Bharat became a Tyaga Bhumi (land of sacrifice), a Yoga Bhumi (land of spiritually) and a Karma Bhumi (land of action) and could set an example to the rest of the world. People say motherland and not fatherland. In every country, the mother is held in high esteem. The feeling of motherhood is far superior to all other feelings. The main flaw of today’s children is that they are not concerned about the happiness and satisfaction of their parents. If you make your parents happy, the whole world will be happy. Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava (revere the mother and father as God). You must understand that parents are verily God.

You have to make your mother happy. Only then will there be peace and happiness in the world. It is meaningless to worship God without revering one’s own parents. First of all, offer worship to your mother as she is the one who has given you birth. Only if the mother’s heart is nectarous will the whole world be nectarous. Rama’s Divinity blossomed under the loving care of Kaushalya. As He was born from the womb of Kaushalya, He got the qualities of Kaushalya. That is why He is worshipped as God. Shivaji could do so much sacrifice for the country because he was born to the pure lady, Jijabai. It is because of the nobility of the mother that the children attain good fortune. So, Prema Swarupas! (embodiments of love!) There is nothing beyond love. Only love is the mainspring of all your good fortune. A man without love is lifeless. You should therefore adore and worship the mother who is the embodiment of love.

Fill Your Heart With Love And Peace

Where is peace in the world? When you do not make your mother happy, how can there be peace in the world? Peace cannot be bought in the bazaar. Every man’s heart is the abode of peace. Only when you fill your heart with love will there be peace in the world. The world is in turmoil today as man lacks total love. Peace will reign supreme in this world only when man develops total love.
We have attained human birth. There is nothing greater than this. Jantunam Narajanma Durlabham (out of all the living beings, the human birth is the rarest). You are born and brought up in society. Then why do you not work for the welfare of society? All the wealth that you have earned has come from society. You should show your gratitude to society. The world is facing problems because man does not show gratitude to society. You should never neglect society. Society’s well-being is your well-being too. But, is anybody looking for the welfare of society? No. It is selfishness all around. Give up selfishness and work for the welfare of society. The world will enjoy peace and security only when you serve society and have devotion towards God. If you want that peace should reign in the world, then you should first develop peace in yourself. Where is peace? It comes only from our heart. Our heart is the source of peace, truth, righteousness and love. You have forgotten the heart and are searching for peace in the external world. You don’t get peace in the bazaar, you get only pieces. Peace is only in your heart. Fill your heart with love. Whatever work you do, do it with total love. But now, wherever you go, there is only selfishness. Man has lost purity as his mind is polluted.

The food you eat is impure. The air you breathe is impure. Everything is impure. Then how can you escape disease? If you do not want disease, eat pure food, breathe pure air, drink pure water and be pure. But wherever one looks around, there is only impurity. When you are surrounded by impurity, how can you get purity? When purity manifests from within, you can experience its reflection, reaction and resound in the external world. First and foremost, you have to infuse purity in society. To whomsoever you speak, speak sweetly, not with hatred, anger and jealousy. First you have to learn this. You cannot always oblige, but you can speak always obligingly. Speak with love. From head to foot, man is filled with anger today. He has become like an animal. Even an animal is better than man. An animal has a reason and season. Today man has no reason and no season. If you behave in this manner, how can you call yourself a human? To call yourself a human, first and foremost show humanness in action. Just because you have a human body, you cannot call yourself a human. The human body will have value only when you cultivate human values, namely, Satya (truth), Dharma (righteousness), Shanti (peace), Prema (love) and Ahimsa (non-violence). Of what use is human birth if human values are absent? First demonstrate humanness. Develop love. By doing so, all will become your friends. What kind of friends? Those who are full of love. Your real friend is only God. God is love personified. He is full of love.
The same Atma, the same love and the same God is present in all beings. Ek Prabhu Ke Anek Naam (one God has many names). With such feelings of oneness, develop love for God. Then your heart will also be filled with love. The heart is like a tank and all the senses are like taps. When the ‘tank’ is full of love, all that comes out of the ‘taps’ will also be love only. Whatever you see in others is only a reflection of your inner being. First of all, understand this truth. If you see evil in others, it is actually the reflection of your own evil feelings. All are one. That is Prema, that is God, that is Atma. That is everything.

Earn The Wealth Of Merit

You have forgotten love and are hankering after all worldly things. Wherever you go it is only money, money, money. Money comes and goes but morality comes and grows. Everyone is interested in amassing wealth. But will the wealth accompany you when you leave this world? No. Only the results of your actions will go with you. Wealth is not going to protect you. Only the wealth of merit will protect you. Paropakaraya Punyaya, Papaya Parapeedanam, (one attains merit by serving others and commits sin by hurting them). Earn the wealth of merit. Do not accumulate sin. Alexander ruled over a vast empire, but when he died what did he carry with him? He went empty-handed. You should carry with you only pure love when you leave this world. If you earn the wealth of pure love, you are the richest person in the world. He who has much satisfaction is the richest man in this world and he who has many desires is the poorest man in this world. Today man is filled with desires from top to toe. As long as you have desires, you will never be happy and peaceful.
Give up desires and see for yourself how much love and bliss you get. The bliss you experience will be far superior to all the happiness you have experienced before. All the bliss is within you. But you are imagining that it is outside. What is outside is only the reflection, reaction, and resound of what is within you. If you are a good person, you will see goodness all around. If you wear blue glasses, you see everything blue. If you wear red glasses, you see everything red. Good qualities are your greatest wealth. Cultivate them. Eschew hatred. Demonstrate Ahimsa. Ahimsa Paramo Dharma (Ahimsa is the greatest dharma). Kill anger. Cultivate love. There is nothing sweeter than love.

Man Is The Embodiment Of Cosmic Form

Sage Narada went all over the world but could not get peace. He realised that peace could not be found in wealth and material objects. It is within one’s own self. Peace and bliss are within, but man is unable to experience them. How can man, who is unable to understand the divinity within, experience God outside? Everything is within you. Man is Vishwa Virat Swarupa (embodiment of the Cosmic Form) but he is behaving like an ordinary person by developing attachment to the ephemeral body.

Give up body attachment. Cultivate the awareness of the Atma. Atmananda (bliss of the spirit) is Amritananda (the eternal bliss). That is within you. Everything is within. All qualities are within you. So, you should try to bring out the love that is within you. You will not get this love outside. You are the embodiment of love. Do not develop attachment to the body. Body is bound to perish one day or the other. Why are you deluding yourselves with this impermanent body? That which is permanent is the Atma. In order to experience Atmic bliss, love is essential. If you cultivate love, you become divine. Do not think that God is different from you. Have the courage to say “I am God”. You are not man. You are God. Have the firm belief that you are God. You must first love your parents. They have given you their blood, their wealth and have brought you up with love and care, taking great pains. So, be grateful to them. That is real Bhakti (devotion). There is no greater Bhakti than this.

Swami has just come for a short while. I have not got the complete satisfaction of coming to Mumbai. I will come again. (loud applause) Cultivate love. Revere your parents. Make them happy. Then I will be with you always. Live a life of love.”

Bhagavan returned to Brindavan that evening.

Note: Swami once again visited Mumbai in November 2009. That was His last visit to the city. But during that visit, Swami did not give any discourse. Thus, this is the last physical address in the city of Mumbai.

My Swami and I – By Vivek Kapoor

Let me take you all back to the year 1989. A seven-year-old boy enters the premises of a huge hall holding his father’s hand. The small boy is mesmerized by the beautiful carvings of elephants and peacocks all over the hall. In front of the hall the boy observes the idol of Lord Ganesha.

Still lost in his own world, the boy walks a little further, along with his father towards the hall, but then abruptly he is made to sit in the front row of a large group of people. The sand is burning hot; the small boy complains to his father, but his father bends down, smiles at him and whispers in the boy’s ear, “Today you will see God, wait for him.”

The boy observes his father walking slowly towards the portico in front. The boy is in tears, he is not able to understand why his father had left him alone for the first time in all these years; what does the word God mean and who is this God because of whom the boy is not allowed to sit with his father? The boy’s eyes are fixed at the portico, waiting for his father to come out and hug him. Even as he is lost in his thoughts, the boy gets disturbed by a sudden commotion amongst the others around.
The boy observes a man dressed in orange clothes coming straight towards him. The man in the orange robe stops in front of the boy looks straight into his eyes and gives him the most beautiful smile ever seen by the boy. He opens his right hand and there lay two chocolates; he gives the chocolates to the boy, taps him on the head and then moves away.

That incident marked the beginning of the Divine relationship between the boy and the Lord at a physical level in this birth of the boy. That boy considers it a great blessing to be able to write about his experience today. I consider it as a privilege to write to you all on a topic, which is so close to my heart, 'My Swami & I'. Through this Divine relationship, which has lasted for the past two decades, I have learnt a lot from Swami. There are innumerable lessons which he has taught me. But of these, there are three lessons which are deep rooted within me and have changed my perception and attitude towards the external world.

The first lesson which Swami taught me was in the form of a Bhajan. The lyrics of the Bhajan struck a chord in my heart when I heard it for the very first time itself. The Bhajan goes thus, “Deena Dukhiyo Se Prem Karo, Mera Sai Prasanna Hoga”. Through this Bhajan Swami opened my eyes to the responsibilities I owe to the society. Living in the metropolitan cities and the so called modern world, my outlook was limited to the well-being of my family and myself.

“To look after the society we have government machinery, isn’t it?" That was my usual answer given on the question of social responsibility. But, it was our beloved Sai Maa, who opened my eyes by sending me to rural India on the pretext of Grama Seva to serve the needy at the villages. He also allowed me to be a part of the Sai Mobile Hospital team for one day. These two incidents showed me the state of poverty and malnutrition which is still widely prevalent in our country; the dilapidated conditions in which the majority of our country men still reside.

Seeing this, I was ashamed of my insensitivity, on the one hand, but on the other hand, grateful on realising how fortunate I was to be living in relative luxury. Swami puts it very beautifully. He says,”Love All, Serve all”. He says, ” A man who does not have Love for others is as barren as a cloud with no moisture, a tree with no fruit, a cow with no milk; he can never earn the grace of God”.

“Forget the harm that anyone has done to you and forget the good that you have done to others”. This was the second lesson that the Lord taught me. Once upon a time there were two friends walking on the beach. While discussing a point, they entered into an argument. In a fit of anger and frustration, one of the friends slapped the other on the face. The one who received the slap on his face was hurt, but he did not say anything. Instead, he wrote on the sand, “Today my best Friend slapped me on the face”.  They both walked a little further and by then it was low tide so both of them decided to take a dip in the sea. All of a sudden, the one who received the slap got stuck in the slush and started drowning, but his friend immediately saved him. On recovering from the near drowning experience, he got up and engraved it on a nearby rock, “Today my best Friend saved my life”.

The boy who had slapped him at first, and then saved his life later, was puzzled at this juncture and he asked his friend, "Why did you first write my name in the sand and now on the rock." The other boy replied, “Whenever anybody causes you harm, you should always write it down on the sand so that the waves of the sea and the winds of forgiveness will erase it. But when somebody does good to you, you should always engrave it on a stone and in your heart, so that no wave or wind can erase it”.

The third lesson which my Lord taught me was in helping me understand the deep significance and meaning of the word 'Surrender'. God is always ready to give us all that we need, but we often do not seem to understand what is really good for us, and what we really need. So, it is better and easier to 'Surrender' completely to God and simply pray for His grace.
This reminds me of the story of a cliffhanger, determined to climb the summit of a high mountain. After years of preparation, one day he set off on his adventure all by himself, not accompanied by anyone as he did not want to share his glory with anyone. He started his climb. Soon the daylight faded off and night set in, but the man was not shaken and he continued his ascent. Hardly anything was visible during the night, but he did not stop. He was just a few meters away from the summit when the unexpected happened. While trying to climb a ridge he slipped. He could feel the tug of gravity pulling him down. He could see his end approaching fast, but then he suddenly felt the tightening of a rope tied around his waist whose other end was nailed to a rock wall of the mountain. Suspended freely in the air he called out to God.

Then unexpectedly a voice emerged from the heavens and asked, “What do you want?”
The man replied, “Save me my Lord”.
The heavenly voice called out, “Do you really believe that I can save you?”
The man replied, “Of course Lord.”
The heavenly voice said, “Well then, cut the rope.”

There was absolute stillness for some time. Then the man did the opposite of what was told instead of cutting the rope he tightened the rope tied around his waist. The mountain rescue team which came looking for him the next morning, found him frozen to death, with his body tied firmly to a rope around his waist and hanging just two feet above the ground.

The story conveys two messages to all of us. First, our faith in God should be unshakeable and we should blindly follow the Voice of God. Second, when God extends His hand to us, we should immediately clasp it. Instead, we all tie ourselves more tightly to our worldly attachments. Come one, come all. Let us not be ungrateful. Let us be faithful in serving Him and loving Him.

Why do we need Spiritual Knowledge?

Sri Sathya Sai in the Prasanthi Nilayam Campus Hostel

Bhartruhari was an ardent devotee, poet, scholar and a role model on the path of spirituality. Once upon a time he was contemplating on his fallacies and misdeeds. He said to himself, “Out of ignorance I behaved like an elephant in rut thinking that there is no one superior to me. Because of the Divine vision of sages and their teachings, I learnt the truth. As a disease can be cured by taking appropriate medicine, the fickle mind can be subdued by the Darshan and teachings of the sages and scholars.”

In this expansive universe, of what magnitude is the body of a human being? What is your form? What sort of a man you are? In the infinite space, of what magnitude is the sun? In that solar system, the earth is like a miniscule entity. Asia is still smaller in comparison to the earth. In Asia, India is still smaller. Andhra Pradesh is a small state in India and Anantapur district is a still smaller piece of land. Prashanti Nilayam is a smaller place in the district and the room in which you stay is still smaller. And in your room you occupy a very small area. Hence what could be the place for your ego compared to the universe in its totality? This is delusion out of ignorance! As one dwells upon humanness, one can understand the true and eternal aspects of philosophy. A train runs at a speed of 50 miles per hour, a flight at 500 miles per hour. Light travels at a speed of 5 crore miles per hour. We are at a distance of 23 lakh crore miles from the stars. The sun appears brightest to us because it is the nearest to us. The sun is also a star. What could be the reason for the faith that humanness is itself Divinity and the reason for transforming humanity into Divinity in this universe?

Three Types of Knowledge

Knowledge is essential to know the Truth. In the circumstances prevailing today, knowledge is being understood as three types. In the normal level, truth is understood as truth and untruth as untruth. This is considered natural knowledge. In the intermediate level, truth is believed as untruth and untruth as truth. The illusory world is believed to be true. What is beyond the comprehension of the senses is believed to be untrue. Hence the belief in natural forces and the non-existence of Divinity is considered knowledge at the intermediate level. The true spiritual knowledge is believed as that where there are no differences and all is one. ‘Sarvam Vishnu Mayam Jagat, Sarvam Brahma Mayam Jagat’ – the entire universe is Lord Vishnu, the entire world is Brahman. This is the quintessence of the spiritual knowledge. For one to assimilate the spiritual knowledge, the natural knowledge is necessary. Only after experiencing this can one gain the eligibility for receiving the spiritual knowledge.

Knowledge is like mother. Everything has manifested from knowledge. ‘Naasti Matru Samo Guru’ – there can exist no other teacher greater than one’s mother. No one is trying to experience the personification of knowledge in the mother. Neither the youngsters nor the elders of today are trying to understand this Divine principle. The root cause of this problem is the modern education system. Because of the modern education, people are adopting the ways which suit the mind and not that which is good for them. They are transforming their tender and sweet hearts into rocks. They are further losing the power of discrimination.
Once upon a time Jawaharlal Nehru asked Mahatma Gandhi as to why he was sad. Gandhiji answered, “How stone-hearted the students are becoming today? What good can these students do to the society? This is my only worry.”

Education is for Life, not merely for a Living

A young woman today aspires to be a good wife but not an exemplary mother. A student today does not aspire to be an exemplary father but an attractive husband. They forget that they should become exemplary fathers. Adding to this, parents encourage such education which promotes all these. A typical father in today’s society does not want his son to be a man of virtue. He wants his son to be a man of great education. Those parents who aspire for transforming their children to be men and women of virtue alone are worthy. Worldly education is not the lone goal of life. Virtues are the backbone of life. Education is for life, not merely for a living. For all this, spiritual thought and spiritual path is highly essential.

Devotion is that which does not allow parting of a devotee from God. That which does not separate a devotee and God, that binding force is devotion. Indians compared devotion to the sacred river Ganga. Ganga means that which is pure, blemishless and of prime significance. Ganga received recognition and fame in the entire universe. Thus devotion has to be pure, blemishless and selfless. Human activity has to be in accordance with devotion. This is compared to river Yamuna. All those activities undertaken to please God are comparable to Yamuna. Hence all the activities performed to please God are the replications of the river Yamuna itself. Selfish and self-fulfilling activities are related to Lord Yama (the God of Death). The former is Yamuna and the latter is Yama. In the world today, both devotion and activity are seen, but the undercurrent (Antarvahini), Saraswati is not seen. The river Saraswati is hidden and undisclosed. The latent knowledge is not visible to us. This knowledge is the true knowledge. Such knowledge aids in subduing the senses.
Ravana had learnt 64 disciplines of education whereas Rama learnt only 32. Even though Ravana was an expert in more disciplines of education than Rama, he has been labeled as stupid and ignorant. What could be the reason for this? Despite his education, he was enslaved to his senses and therefore was pronounced stupid. Lord Rama subdued His senses. All educated people are not knowledgeable. They may be literate. But the educated person who has gained control over his senses is truly a knowledgeable person. Hence those people who realised this inner significance were portrayed through the element of devotion in them.

The Need for Repeated Spiritual Instruction

A devotee should not get disgusted at any point of time. He should not get vexed despite his repeated listening to the same teachings or repeated eating of the same type of food. Swami may be repeatedly speaking of the same thing time and again. He may be telling the same things which He has told earlier. How do you reason it out? You are taking food repeatedly for the same stomach. You have been washing the same face many times a day. Why? Food once taken gets digested and we have to have food again. Similarly, you may forget things you have heard earlier. So to recollect the forgotten things you have to listen to them frequently. You should not feel disinterested. For example - You started taking tea or coffee 15 or 20 years back. You are never bored of taking it even though you have been taking it daily for 15 or 20 years. Every time you take coffee or tea it gives you new enthusiasm and excitement. If it is delayed by 2 minutes you may have a head-ache. You don’t feel uneasy to drink coffee or tea 4 or 8 times a day because you like it. Unfortunately some people are disinclined to listening to spiritual talks, experiences or examples that convey profound meaning. During a spiritual talk they either sleep or have a head-ache. If not these two, they recollect undesirable thoughts and ideas. Even if such unfortunate people listen to innumerable spiritual talks, it would be of no use.

So, even though you may have listened to such spiritual instructions a lot of times, it is necessary that you listen to them once again to remember them well. One should experience the joy of devotion unceasingly without having the slightest feeling of disinterestedness. You should not feel disinclined to it even for a second. The Chakora birds may feel bored of flying in the moon lit night sky. A cuckoo may get bored of singing. As one drinks more and more nectar, he may get vexed of it. But when it comes to God and devotion, one should not be indifferent. This is the true symbol of devotion. Such pure thoughts should develop in the hearts of the students.

Love Is The Force Behind Compassion – By B. Shashank Kumar

Our Lord Sai is the most compassionate one. To Illustrate this I would like to narrate an instance.
On the 7th of September 2005, a man had a severe heart problem and was admitted to the hospital. He asked his nephew who was the student at the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School, to pray to Swami and September being festival time in Puttaparthi the nephew forgot about his uncle. Soon after Darshan the boy received a call stating that his uncle had been admitted to the ICU. The boy felt really bad for not having prayed to Swami.

The next day was a special day indeed as the boy saw Swami himself distributing clothes and other items. Taken away by the love and compassion the boy hardly prayed to Swami to take care of his uncle.

When Bhagavan was about to go back, he suddenly recollected what his mother had told him. He immediately joined his hands and prayed in his mind, ”Swami please help”. Bhagavan with a smiling face looked at him and the boy felt assured. On the 10th of September the boy was assured that his uncle was out of danger.

We often feel that our prayers are being answered but so intricate is his web that we often tend to loose track and get disconnected from him. The ever compassionate Sai’s life is His message and its our duty having received the bounty of his proximity, to follow His message.

One day as I was going to the Mandir, I saw a very poor and helpless woman with her child. The mother went on asking for alms from a man besides her and to give her something to eat from what he was eating. The man gave her a frustrated look. This touched me. It is quite easy to blame God, for not having given us the riches but I said to myself think of the one’s who did not have a morsel of food to eat.

The day was quite bad as I had scored very badly in physics . This fact soon overpowered me and I soon forgot about the mother and her child. In Mandir my whole attention was riveted to a drama which portrayed the need to serve the poor and needy. After the programme was over I received the coconut sweet which I used to cherish a lot and given an opportunity was ready to eat even three at a time. That day I thought that I should give the Prasadam to the crying mother. So I controlled all my senses and began walking out of the Mandir fighting the rising desire to eat that sweet. I saw that poor lady went to her and called out, “Amma”. She immediately spread out her hand and I placed the packet of the Prasadam in her hand. The child smiled seeing this, the mother too gave a beautiful smile and all of a sudden I felt light at heart.

Well, being from a scientific background which demands rational thinking I am clueless and conclude my revere with regard to this incident with the following statement, "Giving away is not only good for the spirit but it is also a beneficial heart stimulant. Health is to a great extent conditioned and controlled by the circulation of blood. That important little circulatory heart I believe is influenced to a greater degree than we realize by the other heart, the seat of affections, the seat of beloved Mother Sai."

Swami often tells that we must love everyone, and be compassionate towards everyone, not so that we are acknowledged but importantly he, on whom we pour our compassion, feels that he has been acknowledged.

Swami loves people who perform selfless acts. In the old Mandir an eye camp was conducted. Soon after the camp was concluded an old man came to the doctors and pleaded them to examine his eyes. Two of the doctors said that the examination was not possible as they had packed their instruments. The old man went to the third doctor and pleaded to him to check his eyes. The doctor took pity on the patient, examined his eyes and gave him medicines. He also asked the patient to chant, “Sairam”.
The next day all the doctors and assistants were seated together. Swami came directly to the three doctors. He asked them what they had told the old man who had come for the treatment. Two of them said that they had sent the old man away without examination as their instruments had already been packed. The third doctor said that he had examined the old man and had given him the necessary medicines. Swami added, ”You also told him to repeat ‘Sairam’, is it not?” Swami asked the doctor to take Padanamaskar. He materialized Vibhuti and applied it on the doctor’s forehead. He also materialized a ring and put it on the doctor’s finger. Swami then told the doctors,” Who do you think that old man was ? It was me!”

Swami appreciates those who really love people and give away everything. In one of his discourses while speaking about sacrifice Swami said that sacrifice is giving away something which both the giver and the acceptor are in need of.

Einstein once stated that, a human being is part of the whole world we call the universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest-a kind of optical illusion of his consciousness. This illusion is a prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires  and showing affection to the people who are nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison, widening our circle of compassion, embracing all living beings and all of nature.

Compassion is the attitude of the heart and this must be learnt from within. Loving our fellowmen brings us closer to God and makes us dearer to him.

Do the Body, Mind and Heart have a Spiritual Role?

Sri Sathya Sai interacting with Students in the Prasanthi Nilayam Campus Hostel

A song which can only be sung, not seen, has various tunes (Raga). There is a unique structure for each tune (Raga). Art is one but there are various aesthetical tastes or emotions. These art forms are called ‘Chatush Shashti Kalas’. This science comprises 64 art forms. Even if celestial singers such as Narada or Tumbura sing in the same tune all the time, the audience will be displeased. Hence God, the personification of the aesthetic nature, takes various forms. The Upanishads proclaimed God as “Raso Vai Saha”. God is the personification of aesthetic qualities. He modifies the aesthetic qualities in mysterious ways.

Nature, which is composed of the three Gunas – Satva, Rajas and Tamas is one. But it comprises a variety of colours, tastes, fragrances and sounds. All these are the attributes that emanated from the one nature. God, who is such a personification of Rasa, is beyond description. Hence the Shrutis (Vedas) declared, “Yatho Vacho Nivartante, Apraapya Manasa Saha”, which means, ‘Words fail to explain Him. Even the mind is incapable of it’. Hence the Shrutis declared the impossibility of describing the Lord either through words or the mind. If one wants to attain that Divinity, God’s name (Nama Smarana) alone is the boat.

Change the Mati (Mind), Not the Mata (Religion)

There are many great people who keep chanting the name of the Lord. There are people who did not transform even a little despite their chanting the name for hours and days together. The demonic nature of Ravana, Bhasmasura and Kamsa did not diminish even a little despite their chanting the name of the Lord. What could be the reason for this? Their minds were engrossed in the thought “Aham Dehosmi”, I am the body. They did penance for a very long duration. They did penance with body consciousness “Aham Dehosmi”. Despite years of penance, if they could not transcend body consciousness, then how can there be any transformation within? People practice various forms of worship and rituals following their family tradition and culture. However, they do not get transformed even a little in spite of the time they spend in their spiritual practice. They change the name they are chanting from one to another because they are tired of waiting for the results. They not only change the name but also their religion. One cannot attain God’s grace if one takes up some other religion. One has to transform the mind. None can imbibe the qualities of God by changing the external appearance. One has to change one’s virtues and qualities. Only the one who transforms his mind attains Divinity.
In a drama, for instance, in the first scene a person enacts the role of a beggar. The same person, in the second scene, acts as a king. In yet another scene the same person plays the character of a minister. The audience interprets the same person differently as the beggar, the king and the minister. The reason is that different roles are played by the same person. The audience captures only the action and the attire of this person and not the person as such. The dog in the house recognises the owner. The dog recognises his master despite his wearing evening dress, office dress, night dress or morning dress only by the sound. It does not recognise the dress. Today dogs seem to have reached greater heights of reality than humans! The reason is that it captures ‘Shabda Brahma’ – the primordial sound of Divinity. But man today tries to recognise only by form and name. The name and form are just imaginations. But the sound is eternal. One who reckons this fundamental principle of sound sees the manifestation of Divinity in the Nama (God’s name). But those who believe in the nature, see only the form as the one composed of the 5 elements. An impure man is the Mrunmaya Rupa (composed of the 5 elements). Hence we have to find the difference between the Chinmaya Rupa (the eternal form) and Mrunmaya Rupa (the ephemeral form). There is Divinity in humanness. Despite the Divinity innate in man, he is bound to the world because of his sensory allurements.

It is a known fact that God is the personification of love. God can be bound by the string of love. It is only when this love is spread for the sake of love, can the Lord’s grace be won. He can’t be won when one prays to Him for petty worldly objects. You should yearn only for love. Hence you should transform yourselves into embodiments of love. You should not be like a ‘lover’. Being a ‘lover’ you love or admire only a single person. If you transform yourself into an embodiment of love itself, you can love the entire universe. One should always remember that the same Divinity pervades all beings.

A Leader has to set an Ideal Example
Once Lord Krishna, in His childhood, ran inside the house and caught hold of the Sari of His mother. He told His mother that He would accompany the cowherds to the forest. Mother Yashoda told Him, “Son! The forest is not an ordinary place to go. There is no road and the path is full of stones, thorns, scorpions and snakes. I shall arrange for a pair of sandals for you today and tomorrow you may go into the forest wearing them along with the cows.” In those days sandals and shoes were not readily available as they are in these days. The cobbler would be sent for and depending on the size of the person the sandals would be made. As Yashoda spoke these words, Krishna replied, “The cows are also walking barefoot!” Yashoda replied saying that the cows are animals and Krishna is a human. Then Krishna explained, “Mother! Don’t be under the impression that these cows are just animals. They turn their blood into milk, forsake their calves and provide milk to people. They feed on grass and give us milk. Even after their death they serve mankind through their skin so that sandals and shoes can be made. Humans don’t have the affection and gratitude which the cows have. They shed tears if I don’t go to see them even for a single day. I have observed many times that they feel happy and gaze at Me the moment they listen to My voice. Not only the cows but also the young calves stop taking milk and look at Me! Even you don’t have the love which those cows and cowherds have for Me.” Gopala is the one who has been a leader – leader of the cows. One can be a class leader, room leader, party leader or a leader in the society. Krishna thus transformed the mind of Yashoda by telling her that a leader has to set an ideal. Everyone has to prove himself to be an exemplar. It is only then that we can do some good to the society and derive happiness for ourselves.

Cultivate your Heart and sow the Seeds of Love

Man is not bestowed with the human birth for no reason. We should realise that this birth is very valuable. The human body is not meant for wasting time. “Jantunaam Nara Janma Durlabham” (Human birth is the rarest and most precious of all). Having taken the noble birth as human beings, if you can’t live as human beings there is no way you can understand the humanness. How do we realise the importance of humanness? A farmer, if he has to cultivate a piece of land, has to do a number of other activities beforehand. First of all he has to soften the entire piece of land, then plough it and sow the seeds. After the crop has grown to a certain stage, he uses fertilizers and removes the weeds regularly. Only after all this is he able to bring home the food grains. This is exactly what we have to do with our hearts. The heart is like a piece of land to be cultivated. We have to cultivate it with utmost care and concern. It has to be filled with the water of love. It has to be ploughed with the plough called enquiry. The seed of the name of God has to be sown. It has to be guarded with the fence called caution and care. You have to protect it with egolessness. It is only then that you can receive the fruit of love.

Students! There is the fruit of love in the lives of all people. To enjoy this fruit one has to remove the outer skin. Only when this outer skin is removed can we savor the juice of the fruit. Take the orange as an example. First of all, we have to peel out its skin. Then we have to remove the bitter seeds inside it. After the juice is extracted the pulp also has to be discarded. We partake only the sweet juice. This is “Raso Vai Saha” (the true essence).

One should reckon the fact that this body has been given to us by God only to relish the sweetness of love. One should first of all peel away the skin of ego and ostentation. Remove the seeds of evil intentions, thoughts and deeds. Discard the pulp of belongingness. It is only then that you can enjoy the juice of love. Thus we have to engage in a spiritual practice of this sort. Every individual is like a farmer. Every heart is like a piece of cultivable land. We should not waste this land. There is no point in having an uncultivated land. This heart is a pure land. As we are not involved in the right spiritual practice, this is turning out to be barren. There is no use whatsoever if we sow seeds in barren land. The heart is an expansive land. No one can ever estimate quantitatively the area of this land. If we are not able to harvest the desired crop, what is the use of possessing acres of land?

In spite of his education and intelligence
A mean-minded person will not give up his evil qualities.
What is the use of having ten acres of barren land?
It is enough even to have a small area of fertile land.

It is enough if there is even a little of pure, untainted, eternal and selfless love. It is enough if you have the slightest gratitude for having received true Ananda (bliss). Hearts devoid of such gratitude and love are indeed barren. Hence what is it that we have to try and aspire for? We should try to cultivate the expansive and valuable heart gifted to us. You have the requisite energy and capability to cultivate it. Students often say before the speech, “Swami! Please bless me with the energy and capability to experience and live in accordance with your command.” They think that they do not have such strength. This not something which has to be given or bestowed. All the strength is within you. But you are unable to see it the way it has to be seen. What is the reason for this? Your vision is not focused on that. If you have your vision focused on that, you will by any means try to utilise it in the best way possible. Human nature is truly meaningful only when you understand a person or an object in its true sense. You have to thoroughly enquire about what you are aspiring for. Then you have to work towards experiencing it.

The Power of Sai’s Love – By Devarun Dutta

Sri Sathya Sai with Students of the Higher Secondary School, Prasanthi Nilayam

Truth is one but wise men interpret it in different ways. There is only one religion, the religion of Love. With the help of this love, we can conquer the hearts of people and transform them. We have all heard Swami starting His discourses addressing us as “Prema Swarupalara” (embodiments of love). All of us are nothing but manifestations of love. Swami has always been teaching us the Divine language of Love. Swami tells us to look at every creation of His, as a manifestation of the Divine. It is only when we begin to see Sai in everything, we will be able to develop pure love. This alone can take us closer to God.

After the board exams of class X, I was determined to join the IIT and wanted to seek admission in one of the coaching institutions at Kota. I even wrote the exam for one of them and got selected for it. Sometime around that period, a small envelope appeared in our postbox. It was that small envelope that opened the doors of Sai for me. It contained my hall ticket for the entrance exam to the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School.

I had applied at Swami’s school as a backup in case I was not able to make it to the IIT coaching institutions. However, seeing this letter, my entire family seemed to change their frame of mind. We were all attracted like iron filings to the Divine Magnet. My parents and me boarded a train at the last moment and left for Puttaparthi.

There too, one day before the exam, I had a high fever and I was not even able to get up on my own. On the day of the exam, I was down with a temperature of 102˚F. My parents literally carried me to the examination hall. But just as I stood in front of the Ganesha statue at the entrance of the school building, I started sweating and my temperature came back to normal all of a sudden.

I went to write the exam but, unfortunately, due to fever, I could not prepare well for the exam. It is only because of Swami’s grace that I cleared all the tests and got through without any difficulty. This is how Swami brings us closer to Him so that we can act as instruments in His Divine Mission and sanctify our lives.

Another incident that happened with me was when I was studying in class nine. I was suffering from Lymphocerata Tuberculosis. This disease is non-pulmonary tuberculosis, which causes the lymph gland to swell. If not treated immediately, it could not only spread out to the whole body but also damage some of the vital nerves. All of us understood that this was something serious and might even require a surgery.

One of the first doctors whom we consulted, wrongly diagnosed it as a preliminary stage of cancer. Though my parents did not tell me anything about it, I knew that something was terribly wrong. My parents looked very depressed.

Later, we went to the Apollo Hospital at Guwahati, and consulted another doctor. She carried out a large number of tests and diagnosed it as a kind of non-pulmonary tuberculosis. However, that was just the beginning. She told us that to cure the disease she had to cut open a full section of the throat externally. She added that the operation was going to be very tough and delicate, as the inflammation had caused many of the adjacent nerves to get intertwined. Some of these nerves linked various crucial organs with each other. My parents were grief-stricken as it would take a lot of time for me to recover and I would have to undergo a lot of pain and suffering.

That night an SMS mysteriously came to my mobile phone, which asked us to do Japa of the Divine name Sai Ram at least a hundred and eight times. We did not know the phone number from which the message came and when we tried to call back, we only got the reply that no such number existed. All of us were dumbstruck, we were stunned and, in fact, a little puzzled. However, taking it to be a Divine command, the whole night my family incessantly prayed to Swami for His help at this time of crisis.

Our Lord who is ‘Dayaswarupa’, showered His grace on us and on the next day sent help to us. That morning, a doctor named Dheeraj Purkayastha, came to my uncle’s house where all of us were present. In fact, that person was a complete stranger, and the only thing that my uncle knew about him was his name and the hospital to which he belonged. This doctor was qualified as an M.S., Master in Surgery, and had received training in U.K. He also had a lot of experience in this field. He examined the reports of my pathological survey. After having a close look at every aspect of it, he assured us that he could cure the disease with the help of a small operation, which involved the surgery of a very small portion of the throat, and it would take very less time to recover.

Thus, His love, which knows no bounds, saved me from a major hardship. During the operation, they took out an inflated gland with a diameter of about four centimeters. This was actually considered to be abnormally big and doctors from other chamber also came to have a look at this diseased gland. This gland was not of much trouble to me only because of Swami’s grace.

Even the post-surgery recovery was not a great struggle. Normally after an operation of the throat, it becomes very difficult to move the throat by even a small degree. Miraculously, I recovered very fast and within a week I was alright. Ten days later, the stitches were removed, and my whole body was normal again. This is how Swami saved me from immense suffering and excruciating pain.

This is how Sai Maa takes care of all of Her Children. In fact, every time we feel our mother’s love, it is our Sai Maa who sends us Her love through them. It is said that God created mother because He could not be physically present everywhere all the time.

We are all enjoying the happiness that life has to offers, only because Sai Maa is protecting us from all sorrows and pains. In return, she wants nothing from us except a word of gratitude or a moment of remembrance. Swami says, “If you take one step towards me I will take a hundred steps towards you”. Thus, even if we remember Him for just a moment, He is ready to shower upon us all His Grace.

However, His greatness lies in the fact that He showers His grace not only on those who pray to Him, but on the entire creation. Just as a flower gives its nectar to all the bees, in a similar way, Swami also makes Himself available to all of His creation. Lord Krishna, in His infinite mercy, assumed the role of the charioteer of Arjuna and taught Him how to attain salvation by overcoming all the bad qualities like that of attachment, ego etc.

In this Kali Yuga, our merciful Bhagavan has Himself become the Sanathana Sarathi for the whole world and is guiding them in the right path. Swami says that He is the Guru to His Bhaktas and helps them to reach their ultimate goal. Swami says that the relation between Him and His ‘Bhaktas’ is that of a Guru and a ‘Shishya’. Such is the grace of our benevolent Lord, who is showing us the path of union with the Divine. He says, “Love All Serve All.” The only thing, which we should do, is to look at each of His creation as a manifestation of Divinity and serve them with a feeling that we are serving the Lord. It is only through service that we can discover God in others. Swami has given each one of us different paths of serving humanity, and thus serve Him. He wants that these service activities must be carried out with selfless motives.

Swami wants everyone to realize his true reality, but at the same time, actively participate in the various Seva activities. We must always follow the saying Head in the forest and Hands in the society. We must all strive to be worthy instruments in the Divine Mission of our beloved Swami.
