Conversations on Preparations for Grand Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations

Friday, August 25, 2000

This evening Swami went to the Super Specialty Hospital to bless Dr. Bhat, Head, Department of Urology, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram; and an internationally-renowned Urologist, who was recovering from a heart attack. Therefore, the Darshan was delayed. During Darshan…

Swami : (To a student) Do you know why I went to Hospital?

Student : I don’t know Swami.

Swami : Dr. Bhat had a heart attack. Now he is fine. (After the interview, in the third block) Dr. Bhat had a heart attack. I went to the Hospital this afternoon at 1.30 pm. Now, he is all right.
(Editor’s Note: This interaction indicates that Swami always wanted the students to know the context of His actions. In this case, it was His concern for the health of a very senior doctor serving since many years in His Super Specialty Hospital, giving up his flourishing professional career.)

Prof. A. K. : Swami, so many cars were coming and going with siren.
Swami : They are family members of a Russian (Kazakhstan) President. On the way, they did not get down at Delhi or Bangalore. Even the customs checking was done here.

Warden : Swami, Ganesh Chaturthi.

Swami : It will not be celebrated here, it will be celebrated there (near the North Indian Canteen). (Pointing to Prof. Anil Kumar) They are putting 750 Ganesha idols.

Prof. A. K. : Yes, Swami, I came to know.

Swami : How?

Prof. A. K. : The organizer told me that they are making massive arrangements and he also said that they are getting some 705 or 750 Ganeshas. He told me to visit once.

Swami : Not 705, but 750. (Pointing to a student) One week old letter, yes or no?

Student : Yes, Swami.

Swami : Keep it, it won't get spoilt.

Students : Swami please come to the Institute. Swami we are performing ‘Tyagaraja’ drama. (They showed a card.) Whenever You come, we will do, Swami.

Swami : I will come now. Will you do? Who is going to sing Tyagaraja Keertanas (devotional compositions of the saint-poet Tyagaraja)?

Student : Swami, students.

Swami : Students! (They mentioned the names of the students who sang those Keertanas.) Who are they? (One student got up to call them. Swami asked him to sit down. Swami then called another group of students who were holding a card. He saw that it was a computer printout. He read out) Bioscience. (Then to Prof. Anil Kumar) Your department, Bioscience.

(To Prasanthi Nilayam Campus Principal, Prof. U. S. Rao) Do you allow using computer (for personal work)?

Principal : No, Swami.

Swami : (About the printout) Then how is this?

Principal : Swami, there are many computers in various departments.

Swami : (To Prof. Anil Kumar) In your department, how many computers?

Prof. A. K. : Two, Swami. (Swami said that the computers in the Institute should be used for academic purpose only.)

Swami : We have a Christian teacher with us, don’t we?

Warden : Yes, Swami, we have (Anand) Solomon.

Swami : Where is he staying?

Warden : He is staying in the Mandir along with Hospital boys.

Swami : How many students are having fever?

Warden : Swami eight to ten students. Measles is also there.

Slowly Swami went back. Bhajans started at 5.00 pm. This was followed by a music programme presented by devotees from U.S.A. at 6.00 pm. They sang songs in various languages (Indian and foreign).
