“What do you want?”

Wednesday, June 21, 2000

During evening Drashan, in the portico, Swami pointed to a devotee, Sri Ammana Shastri, asked a student…
Swami : Do you know this old man?

Student : No! Swami!

Swami : He was Principal of the Easwaramma High School fifteen years ago. (Talking to a senior devotee) Today is your birthday. I know, 81 years! (Swami materialised a gold bracelet and Himself put it on the devotee’s hand. To the students) 81st Birthday. (Referring to the bracelet) Bahar Peetal Ka Lekar Pehena. Main Gold Ka Diya (He was wearing a brass one bought from outside. I gave him a gold one). (Swami then called a devotee sitting at the back.) Kaisa Hai? (How are you?)

Devotee : Swami Ki Daya (Swami’s compassion). Swami, Chief Minister has sent a letter.

Swami : Achha! (Really!) (Swami opens the letter and reads it.) Chaala Pedda Potta (Very big stomach).

Devotee : Swami Telugu Nahi Aata (Swami, I don’t know Telugu).

Swami : Tumahara Pet-Full Basket, Kitna Bada Hai (Your stomach-full basket, so big).

Devotee : Sorry Swami.

Swami : Kya Sorry! Kitna Age? (What sorry! What is your age?)

Devotee : Swami, 58 years.

Swami : Fir, Kya Marriage Kar Sakta Hai? Karega? (Then get married? Will you marry?)

Devotee : Whatever Swami commands.

Swami : No tell! Will you marry?

Devotee : No desire Swami. Whatever You command.

Swami :Lie! Lie, from head to toe, it is a lie.

Devotee :Swami, mother’s health…

Swami :Haan, Wife Aane Se Mother Ka Seva Kar Sakta Hai (If wife comes, she can serve mother). Tumhara Bhi Seva Kar Sakta Hai (She will serve you also).
(All laugh.) There is a limit till 61 years. There is still time.
(Swami smiled and went back to the interview room. Swami later gave watches and apples to the Primary School students. After some time, Swami came to the Ganesh Portico. To a group of students) What is it?

Student : Swami, we are praying for M.A. Economics (course to commence at the University).

Swami : What?

Student : Swami! We want to stay with You for some more years. We want to continue our post graduation. Swami, please start M.A. Economics course.

Swami : First ask Vice-Chancellor. Come through the Vice-Chancellor. Rules are there. (To a teacher) These boys want to do M.A. in Economics. Is there no M.A. in our Institute?

Teacher : M.A. in English was there before. Now it is discontinued.

Swami : They should not ask Me directly. In other University also, they don’t go directly to Chancellor. Vice-Chancellor is the head of the University. Let them come through Vice-Chancellor. Who is there to teach?

Teacher : Prof. Vishwanath Pandit. (Prof. Vishwanath Pandit is a Visiting Faculty to the School of Business Management and the Department of Economics since many decades. An internationally-renowned economist, he was Former Head, Department of Economics, University of Delhi.) He keeps coming from Delhi School of Economics. He is a very good teacher.

Swami : Manchidi, Manchidi (Good, good). (To the students) Come through Vice-Chancellor. (To Prof. Anil Kumar) Swami cannot do anything about this. The request should be put forth to the Vice-Chancellor.
(After sometime, to Sri Bhagia) Where is your daughter-in-law?

Sri Bhagia : Swami… Students, Swami?
Swami : Daughter-in-law went out. (Just then Prof. Anil Kumar returned after drinking water.) See, he had gone out. Nine days more, his wife is not here.

Prof. A. K. : No, Swami, I am very happy.

Swami : Outside you may say so, inside you miss her.

Swami created Vibhuti for Sri Mishra, English Teacher at Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School and accepted a kerchief from Sri Bhagia. Swami wiped His face and returned it to Sri Bhagia. Swami called a student from the third block and checked his hand to see whether he is wearing a ring. Then Swami materialised a three-diamond ring for the student.

Swami : (To another student) Emi Kavali? (What do you want?)

Student : I want You, Swami.

Swami : Why?

Student : This world is temporary. I don’t want to live in this world, Swami.

Swami : Why? (Swami called Prof. Anil Kumar.)

Student : This world is bad.

Swami : (To Prof. Anil Kumar) You tell him.

Prof. A. K. : World is beautiful. It is good.

Swami : How do you say so?

Prof. A. K. : It is created by God. How can His creation be bad? (Swami called a Russian devotee and spoke to him in Russian. Prof. Anil Kumar was surprised.)

Swami : I know all the languages. No need of translation. (Swami told the Russian devotee to take the student to Russia and get him married there.) He is a good boy.

Student : No, Swami. I will remain in Puttaparthi. My mother is not well.

Swami : Where is she?

Student : My place, Mettur, near Salem, Swami.

Swami : I will give Prasadam. You send it by post. (To a teacher) This Russian devotee is coming here for the past eight years. He is a very good doctor and does lots of operations. (Swami went around the students’ block after many months and took letters from many students.)

Student : Swami, please come to Hostel.

Swami : You are not the only one in Hostel.

Swami walked away towards the interview room. On 23rd June, Sri Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, came for Swami’s Darshans.
