Trayee Sessions - Part 3

Wednesday, May 2, 2001

Swami came at 4.27 pm. He spoke to a few boys in the Central Hall. While entering the Jhoola room, Swami saw a student sitting by the side of the Jhoola.

Sri Sathya Sai at Trayee Brindavan

Swami : (To that student) Yesterday you were sitting elsewhere. (To the Brindavan Warden) He keeps his hand near a sharp corner of the Jhoola, so that it would not hurt Swami. (To another student who had applied Vibhuti and Kumkum on his forehead) In My opinion, if you apply turmeric down and Gandham (sandal) on the top, then the whole forehead will be full! (To Prasanthi Nilayam Warden) Emi Siva Sankara Sai? How is Prasanthi Nilayam?

Warden : It is very hot. Swami is not there.

Swami : What is Venkatachalam (Hostel kitchen in-charge) telling? He does good work. Good man. (Turning to two music students) Music boys don’t know Swaram. They miss Shruti. How can music boys miss? They don’t know Shruti and Talam. They know other things well.
(To Sri Bhagia, Faculty Member, School of Business Management at Swami’s University) Kya Bhagia, Aaj Shruti Kaisa Tha Bhajan Time? (How was the pitch during Bhajans this evening?)

Sri Bhagia : Swami, it can be improved.

Swami : Dekho, Tum Zara Vedanta Ko side Me Rakho. Jo Question Puchhta Hun, Uska Jawab Do! (See, you leave your Vedic wisdom aside for sometime and answer My questions.) What is your subject? (Sri Bhagia said, "Business Management".) In Management, what subject?

Sri Bhagia : Leadership and Operations Management.

Swami : Who is a leader?

Sri Bhagia : Only the Avatar is the true leader.

Swami : Are you not a leader?

Sri Bhagia : Only Swami can be the ideal leader.

Swami : Leader has individual character, national character, and fundamental character. If there is no individual and fundamental character, how can there be national character? How do you teach the students these?

Sri Bhagia : We take Swami as the goal, compare other leaders with Swami, and show that Swami is the ideal leader.

Swami : Boys Pass Hota Hai? (Will the students pass in their exams?) (Sri Bhagia was silent.) What about Marketing? Who is teaching Marketing?

Sri Bhagia : Mr. Naren Ramji.

Swami : Narendra. Ph.D. (He was pursuing PhD along with teaching)

Sri Bhagia : Yes, Swami.

Swami : Finance?

Sri Bhagia : Mr. Mohan Krishna and Prof. Ramamoorthy.

Swami : Who is best? (Meaning which subject is better) In My opinion, Finance is better than Marketing. M.Tech. is good. Economics covers all. We are going to start M.A. in Economics this year. It is to be here in Brindavan and not in Prasanthi Nilayam. Here lot of rooms are empty, but in Prasanthi Nilayam, all rooms are full. Who is teaching M.A. Economics?

Sri Bhagia : I don’t know Swami.

Swami : You don’t know that Professor from Delhi Economics (School).

Sri Bhagia : Yes, yes, Prof. Vishwanath Pandit.

Swami : Yes, he is highly reputed. Earlier, he was associated with Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Sen. (Dr. Amartya Sen, recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 for his work in Welfare Economics, is Honorary Professor at Delhi School of Economics and a colleague of Prof. Vishwanath Pandit.) He is from Delhi.

Sri Bhagia : Yes, Swami, he is very good in his subject. He follows Swami’s teachings.

Swami : Yes correct. Good man. Simple man. He is coming on 8th. Exams are there in Parthi. He will stay with Swami for three days and go back.
(To the singers – Sujith and Tara Shankar) You also can go to the Music College and learn Shruti and Talam. You don’t know Shruti and Talam. Your voice is good. But you restrain your voice. You change your voice many times. Why do you change it?

Student : Swami should teach us.

Sri Sathya Sai with noted singer Sri Ghantasala

Swami : I will teach. But how much salary will you give! (Laughter) Music boys must know Shruti, Laya, Raga, and Tala. Music starts with Om which is the Shruti. (Swami sang the same.) You all know Ghantasala (Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao (1922–1974) was a legendary and distinguished Indian playback singer and music composer in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Tulu and Hindi) who was a great singer. He used to practice by the side of the ocean. He took the ocean’s sound as the Shruti. Only he could hear it. He didn’t have Harmonium. He used the ocean’s sound. He practiced like this and become world renowned. Similarly, M. S. Subbulakshmi (Bharat Ratna and internationally-renowned Carnatic vocalist) used to go early in the morning to the beach and practice. She used the ocean’s sound as Shruti. (To Sujith) You have an ocean in Kerala (The state of Kerala has the Arabian Sea to its west and the Indian Ocean to its south). Why don’t you go and practice?

Sri Sathya Sai at the residence of Smt. Subbulakshmi at her residence in Chennai

Sujith : I will do so Swami.

B. Warden : Ghantasala was a great devotee.

Swami : He came here and stayed here for a month. He sang daily.

B. Warden : At the end, he used to sing only Swami’s songs.

Swami : (To a singer) What is that song?

Student : ‘Yenta Hai…’

Swami : He sang it here in Brindavan.

(The students sang. Swami corrected some parts of the song. The students didn’t know Telugu properly and had made some mistakes while singing. Then Swami asked another student from London to give a talk. During his talk the student mentioned that Swami’s love was equal to that of a thousand mothers.)

Swami : You can’t experience one mother’s love. How about thousand mothers?
(After his speech, which ended with a song, Swami blessed him.)

Swami : You started a story but what about it end. You told that you went to the Super Specialty Hospital. But what happened to your leg? The beginning, middle and end of a story must be well-connected.
(Swami then turned to the Prasanthi Nilayam Warden.) Emi Siva Sankara Sai. Tell something about your stay in the Hostel. How do you spend your time? (Swami told him to speak about students. After his speech, Swami blessed him.) It is time to go.

B.Warden : Swami must speak.

Swami : Exams are there (Entrance exams of the Institute).

Swami accepted Aarti. While going back, He took a letter from a student and read it. He also spoke to a Primary School student. Swami gave Prasadam trays to the students and blessed all from the balcony of the first floor before retiring for the day.
