Trayee Sessions - Part 9 (4): A Story of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

April 24, 2001

...Continued from Part 3

Swami : (continuing) So if anyone criticizes you, face it. Don’t be weak. Fight it. Realize it. Demonstrate the truth to the other person. Tell, “I like Swami. I want to go to Trayee (Swami's Ashram at Brindavan, Bangalore). You have no right to stop me”. If he tells anything further harshly, slap him. On the other hand if he speaks softly, tell him, “I am going to the Ashram. You have spoilt your life in Samsara. I am leading a fulfilled life”. So do not go the extremes of fear or fighting hastily. If some tells against god, tell him, “He is my God. Who are you to question about Him?  I have my God. I like Him. That is my confidence. You have no right to interfere. Shut up”. You must teach others thus.

Sri Ramakrishna with his disciples
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was an expert in teaching. He didn’t even know ABCD. He used to tell, “I am going to Kamarakpur”. If any one asked him whether there was a meeting there, he would reply, “No, I am going to get my pencil”. He used to tell pension as pencil. Once Narendra told him, “Please tell pension and not pencil”. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa replied, “Let people laugh. For me, it is pencil”. He was determined and stubborn about this.

Rani Rasmani
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was a priest in Rani Rasmani’s temple. His monthly salary was Rupees 2. He ate a little Naivedya of the Lord, spent one rupee, and offered the other rupee to the Mother. He had great love for the Mother and lived in Ananda. One day he told the Mother, “You are Rama and I am Hanuman”. He kept thinking of Hanuman. He became one with Him. As a result he grew a tail 3 inches long.

Another time he told, “You are Krishna, and I am Radha”. He became Radha. He went to Rani’s son-in-law Madhurnath who was in-charge of the temple. He asked, “Will you give me a saree and bangles for the mother?”. Madhur gave a new one. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa wore this and was plucking flowers. Madhurnath used to come to the temple at 11 a.m. He saw a lady there and went back. Chanting Krishna’s name, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa fell down on a lamp. His saree caught fire. He had such great determination in his Sadhana.

Once Lord Rama asked Hanuman, “Hanuman, how do you worship me?” Hanuman replied, “First you are the master and I am the servant. Next you are Bimba (object) and I am Pratibimba (reflection). Finally I and you are one”. This shows the philosophies of Dwaita (dualism), Vishista Adwaita (qualified non-dualism), and Adwaita (non-dualism). Ramakrishna Paramahamsa experienced all the three philosophies.

He was afflicted with cancer in the later stages of his life. He could not eat anything. Narendra and others asked him, “Please pray to Mother to cure you”. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa replied, “I have prayed. But she told, “So many crores of people are eating. What is the loss if you don’t eat?” Therefore I will not ask Her anymore. Mother told me that it is for my good. She also told, “Earlier you kept chanting loudly my name. Now chant it silently inside”.”

Sri Ramakrishna and Mother Kali
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa did lot of Sadhana and fulfilled his life. One day he could not bear not having the Mother’s Darshan. He got up at night 12’o clock and walked to the Ganges to drown in it. He kept walking into the Ganges. But he felt that the water was always only knee deep. The Mother then told him, “Due to ignorance you are trying to end your life. But your life is in my hands. You have no right to lose it. Therefore I reduced the level of the water. Offer everything to Me”. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa offered all to the Mother. He lived a life full of Ananda.

  1. Om Sai Ram
Can someone elaborate on why the Statue of Mother Kali appears to be standing on that of Lord Shiva?
It was seen in a local shop and noone seemed to know why this particular form was so.So I'm quite pleased to see the very picture here at the perfect time (Thanks to "Saincidence")An explanation of Divine Mythology or, Divine Mystery would be good but if there is a 'Sai' way of explaining its practical significance would be great'.thanks.JSR.

    1. The Shiv tattava (Divine Consciousness as Shiva) is inactive, while the Shakti tattava (Divine Energy as Kali) is active. Shiva and Kali represent Brahman, the Absolute pure consciousness which is beyond all names, forms and activities. Kali, on the other hand, represents the potential (and manifested) energy responsible for all names, forms and activities. She is his Shakti, or creative power, and is seen as the substance behind the entire content of all consciousness. She can never exist apart from Shiva or act independently of him, just as Shiva remains a mere corpse without Kali i.e., Shakti, all the matter/energy of the universe, is not distinct from Shiva, or Brahman, but is rather the dynamic power of Brahman.[47] Hence, Kali is Para Brahman in the feminine and dynamic aspect while Shiva is the male aspect and static. She stands as the absolute basis for all life, energy and beneath her feet lies, Shiva, a metaphor for mass, which cannot retain its form without energy

  2. "The image of a recumbent Shiva lying under the feet of Kali represents Shiva as the passive potential of creation and Kali as his Shakti. "

There are alot of different stories about why mother kali is standing on lord shiva her consort...but the one I know is that when mother durga became very angry she turned into mother kali to kill 2 demons. After killing them and drinking their blood she began to act out in anger. After hearing from the rest of the demi gods that no one can calm her and controll her lord shiva came. He laid down on the ground and when she saw that she was stepping on her husband she took out her tongue. That image of her is widely known .
